You'll find me either rock climbing or map-making
(Finally!) I've posted a new hand-drawn hillshade tutorial. My old one lived on a site that no longer exists, so I've rewritten it - complete with steps and time-lapse videos. Thanks to those of you asking where the heck it is! You've been my motivation.
I have finished designing my new font! Inspired by old USGS topo maps. Download & use it for free if you wish!
More characters & styles will be added soon.

I have finished designing a new font that I've named "High Alpine." It's name comes from its tall design and my climbing pursuits. I'm excited to share a little post about its design, where you can also read how to download it!
I wrote a tutorial for how I draw hand-drawn hillshade, up on my blog now. Each step has a time lapse video showing the process. Enjoy! 🗻

If I could tell people one thing about maps it would be:
They are not unbiased documents. They are a long series of choices - even your smart phone map - is full of biases that the mapmaker wanted you to see. Here is why that is beautiful 1/
I'm often interested in exploring more than one style on a single map. Here are 2 styles of a bird range map.
Robins are already singing the promise of Spring! Soon Swainson's Thrush will be singing here too. Both birds in the Turdidae family.

Personal thing I’ve been reluctant to share here but I’ve been unable to respond to folks on social media lately & need to let them know I will be unresponsive for a bit: my parents are both in the hospital & the prognosis is poor for my father. All your love is well received.
I was influence by art deco souvenir pamphlets for this map. I see these ad-like maps while hunting for maps in antique stores: Pulpy paper, halftones, delicious exaggerated flair of the local area. So I included a ferry inspired by the Kalalala

Which results in better maps?
Tweet-shaming or lending expert knowledge to your fellow map maker?
Asking for a lot of cartographers tired of seeing tweet-shaming.
A few days ago while rock climbing, I photographed some pretty sandstone. Today I used the photo to make a fantasy map of some of Kystfjell's islands.

The cartography world has lost a wonderful human, my mentor and friend Clint Loveman. Many of you knew and admired Clint as well. His immense kindness & energy cannot be overstated. Here I share a few words.
From the preface of my book, Mapping By Design, highlighting one of the reasons that I:
1) Love my chosen career
2) Avoid gatekeeping
We are *all* still learning.
I made these 2 (WIP) maps inspired by 70s & 80s book covers. I used the new Maps for Adobe 2.0 which allows you to open AIX files from Pro as organized layers in Illustrator. Sign up for our upcoming webinar to see me &
@anna_breton
demo the process.
I've been asked a few times, "If you had to choose between mapping or climbing, which would you choose?" I respond by making maps about rock climbing. Read:
Super thanks to
@pinakographos
for the monochrome mapping call.

*Sleep Under the Stars* day is coming up August 8th — as I am easing out of my climbing vacation. So why not map all US car-accessible campgrounds & select climbing spots styled as a star chart?
I'm so into this minimalist map by
@pinakographos
. It shows continental divides of North America as ridgelines. Its color & simplicity is gorgeous. In his post he calls the halftone gratuitous, but I think it adds a winsome approachability.
I made these two New River Gorge National Park maps to celebrate

Hey, cartographers! In addition to your mapping passion, what is another activity that energizes you? And what are the similarities & differences between the two?
For me it’s climbing. 🧗🏼♀️
I'll be doing my first YouTube live-stream this Sunday on transparency masks in map design. It will be quick & is mostly practice for
@pinakographos
' 'How to do Map Stuff' online event.
Here's the animated version of the John Snow cholera map that I made & shared at Esri UC last week. I made it w/ Pro, Illustrator (via Maps for Adobe), & After Effects. Has audio, an element I enjoyed using in a map.
Excited to share a couple of new updates for the BellTopo Sans font:
1) BellTopo Sans Regular is available in the new
@ArcGISOnline
Map Viewer Beta
2) I added new styles: Bold, Italic, & Bold Italic.
Download the font & use for free if you wish!
I chose to do a late-1800s style for my fourth of nine different styles of the same map extent. Early in the making, but oh so fun!

My colleague, Maps for Adobe engineer Ashley helped create useful OSM libraries. You can search these libraries to add OSM basemaps to your maps in Maps for Adobe - neatly organized Illustrator files! Ashley writes a great how-to here:

Day 24: Elevation but I've had no time. So here is the *extremely* preliminary sketch, which hopefully will soon become a finished hillshade of part of Utah's canyons.
I’ve been drawing hillshades all weekend, since it’s been a little too chilly to climb. Here’s one of my sketches from today. ⛰

Friday news: I am now writing a book about this! It is the book I always wanted to write. I'm in the very beginning stage (we're talking page 1 folks). But I'm super happy to get started on it.

Some of the most beautiful dataviz is behind the scenes stuff - notebooks, storyboards, thumbnails, & journals made during the iterative creative process. Luckily

shared her gorgeous hydro thumbs w/ us last week.

I'm delighted & honored to have my piece on Map Icon Design published in the GIS&T Body of Knowledge today. The GISTBoK is a great resource for those practicing & teaching spatial. 🌍
It’s up, folks! Here is our webinar where my marvelous colleague

and I share a few cartography tips with the new ArcGISPro-to-Maps for Adobe workflow.

I made a YouTube tutorial for when you need to mimic building footprint shadows in simple maps in Illustrator.
Thanks to
@pinakographos
for the push into the realm of YouTube knowledge sharing.
Big day today! I drilled the first hold in our home rock climbing wall. It’s not quite done, but this shutdown project is almost complete.
Biggest smile I’ve had in a while.🧗🏼♀️
My first time on a podcast 🔊 I got to talk about critical cartography, why I’m so excited about being a cartographer today, & one of the many reasons I love my job. This was fun. Thanks for having me

While making this map of this part of California, I kind of wanted to road trip with Paul Giamatti. The vast ocean area and snug "Pacific Ocean" label will make sense on the final version of this map.
I am making a set of neuomorphic point symbols for some maps, and decided to use these Seattle building footprints to test various techniques. Here is the first sketch.
About 3.5 years ago, I challenged my little hermit self to join twitter, and it hasn’t been too scary. In part, this is because of carto twitter. Y’all are great.
Proof that cartographers see maps *everywhere*. I posted an Instagram story (left) this morning, and
@jonahadkins
replied with the brilliant map (right). Bravo Jonah 👏
Fontmaking on a Friday night. I've just completed the letters! On to numbers & glyphs, and a little refining - then Equinox font will be released into the wild!

Gratitude post! Something I’ve wanted to do for so long - I just finished hosting a GIS gathering of local women. A dozen of us sharing what we do and learning about each other’s geo experiences. 1/
That was fast! My copy of

I created this lil vid as a study in After Effects in prep for a larger map project. I call these practice goes “sketches.” I’m excited for the bigger proj & becoming super familiar w/ this tool. (music added to avoid silence. Actual proj will have voice etc)
A bit delayed, but Monochrome nonetheless.

I did some tweaks to this map that I made a little while ago. Made in Illustrator w/

Creativity has been a useful tool these days (more than usual). Early into this map I'm making. I decided to use a fading halftone pattern for the shoreline rather than a concentric shoreline effect. Mapping a place I love.
A family that - maps together! My nephew started making fantasy maps. He & I are going to make one together & record the process. Nephew will make the design decisions. I'll be there for tech & carto support. I am beyond thrilled abt this.
In ch.3 of my in-prog book, readers will make this Mexico map. I’ll have them bring it to a point, as they read abt mapmaking in Maps for Adobe & Illustrator. This WIP version demos the part where I encourage readers to continue exploring their own unique style if they choose.
