For the past few years I've been writing the retrospective Re-Cycle series for
@Eurosport_UK
on the most compelling, controversial and extraordinary riders & races in cycling history. You can hear
@GrahamWillgoss
narrate all 51 episodes here:
Ineos Grenadiers should do the decent thing (what they should have done this year) & take Cavendish on for one more year. They don’t have any proper GC riders anymore. They could feasibly shape a season around delivering him - the fastest sprinter in this Tour - to one more win.
I'm fascinated by this 1948 Tour de France postcard collection which, when laid out, marks the entire route of the race that year. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

So much colour. Ullrich leads Armstrong and “little punk” Mayo, with his Basque teammate Zubeldia, over the summit of the Tourmalet ahead of the drama on Luz Ardiden in stage 15 of the 2003 Tour de France.
Unconfirmed reports of Remco Evenepoel saying, "Vous êtes des assassins. Oui, des assassins!", to race organisers as he toiled over the top of the Col d'Aubisque just now...

Has any other vehicle - entirely unrelated to the sport in question, besides the logos - held such a prominent role in a sporting event before?
#Giro107
"I'm the king of the world!"
Tony Martin's either doing his best Titanic impression or establishing his patron of the peloton credentials by calling a temporary ceasefire ahead of the next treacherous descent...

The medical advice when you fracture the radial head of your arm is 2-4 weeks in a sling while it heals.
Marc Soler fractured both, got back on his bike & finished today’s stage 💪🏻

(You probably won’t see much about it on TV until season 4 of The Least Expected Day)
Devil's advocate would say that if you choose to send a team featuring three former Movistar riders to the Tour, then there's a good chance that the team will start to perform like, well, Movistar on the Tour…

The cycling community bemoaning the lack of sponsorship in the sport and the fragility of its business model.
The cycling community also getting a bee in its collective bonnet when a team puts the logo of its new sponsor - shock! horror! - on the front of its

jersey.
Came across an account today of some cyclist who’s already finished the Rapha 500 (2 days after Xmas) & who was complaining about someone drafting him in Richmond Park. What a sorry existence people lead. (I’ve never understood the anger people feel about being drafted.)
Alto de Gamoniteiru 😍
Stage 18 of

finishes on this remote climb in the Asturias, which is being used for the first time in the race's history. Rarely dropping below 10% it ramps up to 17% on that final brutish sweep beneath the weather station. Another gem 🇪🇸🚵♀️🐂
Having snared the Velo d'Or for winning a Tour where his only rival was injured (as opposed to winning races throughout the season, as the injured guy did) Jonas Vingegaard's transition to Bond villain is now complete...

Not a great look from Roglic or his team to go public with this stance, which we all know is complete and utter tosh. There was no way Fred Wright was to blame for that crash. This should have been spiked by Jumbo's PR people.
💬 "After the crash, it took me time to straighten things out. My conclusion is that the way this crash happened is unacceptable. This is not the way I want the sport to continue and I want to make that clear."

Check out this crazy road in Japan: Mount Iwaki, with its 69 hairpin bends. Apparently you can cycle up and down it on one day of the year...

Lovely gesture from the former yellow jersey to the current maillot jaune as Alaphilippe seeks out Bernal towards the back of the bunch to offer him his hand. What a refreshing site from a rider who has lit up this race - and another, who will light up many more to come

Such terribly sad news about Richard Moore. One of the nicest men, a true gent, always kind, compassionate & funny. A huge talent & trailblazer. I will miss his voice & company on the

immeasurably. All thoughts with Lionel, Daniel, the pod & above all his family.
Today the

There has never been a more successful pure sprinter in the sport. On his day
@MarkCavendish
was one of the best cycling has ever seen; but his day happened so often that we can only conclude that he was THE best.
Terrible, terrible news. Let’s remember Michael Goolaerts with this happy image, not the sickening ones people were sharing yesterday. Thoughts with his family, teammates and friends.
Henao, Quintana, Bernal, Uran: Nice to see the gathering of four Colombians who have all, in their own way, ridden for Team Sky over the years...

Somewhere in the middle of that peloton, Mark Cavendish is looking wistfully at that pink locomotive and reminding himself what a train looks like...

I live 50m from here & I don’t want my neighbourhood “restored” as you say. It’s much better now without people using Leighton Road as a rat-run. There’s no longer speeding vehicles & stand-offs between disgruntled drivers. Less noise & more cyclists, too. What’s not to like?
Roger De Vlaeminck takes a restorative bottle of wine from his wife Marleen during the 1971 Tour de France. The Belgian crashed heavily in stage 7 - hence the bandaged left elbow & hand - and threw in the towel in stage 11. 🇫🇷🚴♂️🍷
People go on about Sky/Ineos but the reality is that, collectively and professionally, they are so much better than the rest. The way they responded to Thomas’ crash when Woods took down him and Moscon was phenomenal.

The “Au Tour de France” bicycle shop in Aude, a village south of Carcassonne, taken in June 1914. The lives of these amateur cyclists was about to take turn none of them could have ever predicted.
Is there a more iconic polka-dot picture in recent years than this capture of Warren Barguil winning on the Izoard to secure the king of the mountains title in the 2017 Tour de France?
Just finished Tour de France: Unchained

on Netflix. Personally, I think many people were overly harsh & a bit snobbish about it. I thought, given the constraints, it was very entertaining – although a few things still baffle me. Some thoughts/questions here… 🧵 1/
Bloody cyclists! Who do they think they are, riding around in lycra uninsured, not using the cycle path, thinking they're in the Tour de bloody France, not paying any road tax etc etc.

Your job literally entails getting drivers who blast past schools at 60mph off any charges. The state of your attempt at humour is woeful. This tweet is up there with that Republican chap posing with his family all brandishing weapons. Speaking of massive weapons…
Scariest thing about that Thomas crash was the attire of the hulking man who came to his aid - black shorts rolled up and a t-shirt in a knot. Can't get more French than that 😂
#TDF2019
Filippo Ganna. What a legend. As a “big guy” myself, it’s hard not to idolise someone who has made such better use of his huge frame and, in his case, innate talent. Scary to think how much more he could achieve - and in so many disciplines. Forza Italia! 🇮🇹🥇 🎉
Just finished Mark Cavendish: Never Enough. The raw emotion when he wins at Fougères to draw a line under that terrible, life-consuming barren patch… Wow… Even though we all know the script by heart it still brings a tear to the eye. Best comeback in sporting history?
Slovenia has now won over a quarter of the stages so far on

and this in a race which Primoz Roglic effectively crashed out from on day three. 🇸🇮🚨🇸🇮
I wonder how many times in his current profession Primoz Roglic has thought about his previous profession and has come to the conclusion that, on balance, snow is softer and more forgiving than concrete.
Now the

is practically over I think it’s time to disclose that in February, I accepted a freelance role as consultant for the French swimming pool industry & the national association of chateaux and outdoor aerially viewed art. Apologies for any conflict of interest 🙏🏻
Getty says this is crazed Anquetil after a stage during the 1959 Tour de France. Scary stuff. He's so knackered he looks like an entirely different person.

Imagine donating money to a millionaire former footballer because he slandered a media personality while peddling his misogynistic wares in a bid to stoke the culture war coals that have become his sole raison d’être after being snubbed for a commentary gig…

What I don’t get about these e-races from a fan perspective is this: who watches cycling for the physical act of cycling? I only tune in for the views, intrigue & drama, all of which are wholly absent on pixellated computerised cartoons coordinated by a turbo trainer in a garage.
Dani Martinez joins Tao Geoghegan Hart, Pavel Sivakov and (probably) Carlos Rodriguez into the great Ineos exodus. Are they freeing up space for Remco Evenepoel while doing their best to make sure the Belgian feels at right home with a distinctive lack of climbing support?!
Haven't watched such a tense race since, well, Amstel Gold. Whose Grand Tour or major race performance does the blue marble most match in recent years? At one point I thought he'd done a Simon Yates in the 2018 Giro after some seriously debatable tactical decisions, but then...
Why are people complaining about having to pay for Strava? They’ve created a product which you can’t expect to have for free forever. Ditto newspapers, Audible, many podcasts etc.

All smiles for Spain's Jesús Ezquerra, who proposes to his girlfriend in the Burgos-BH car during the final stage to Madrid - and even takes out a ring from his jersey pocket

Alternatively - additionally, even - maybe the driver should try not driving bonnet-first across a pedestrian and cycle crossing without confirming if anyone is on said crossing? Just a hunch.
For no reason beyond sartorial elegance, he's a picture of Jacques Anquetil in the maglia rosa during the 1967 Giro d'Italia, back in the day when cyclists didn't wear helmets & always combed their hair. Note the short shorts.
Enric Mas shipped almost three minutes on the Tourmalet - so, all in all, a successful audition for Movistar, who he's expected to join next season

While everybody else is suffering in the Pyrenees,

Bored during the lockdown? Then feast your eyes on a 75-minute résumé of the 1951 Tour de France, featuring Louison Bobet combing his hair, the dashing Hugo Koblet in yellow, and Fausto Coppi going over the Izoard in pole position (🇫🇷)
