If you're on Twitter for real medical advice, you need a lot more than medical advice. The problem is always people. People ruin everything.

“The government can’t tell me to wear a mask!”
Do you wear a seatbelt? Do you put your kids in car seats? Do you obey traffic laws? (Mostly) Do you smoke in public areas?
These are public safety issues.
It’s about protecting others. It’s a society. Not anarchy.
Hi! I’m an ER doc. You might know me from my greatest hits including “how much have you had to drink tonight?” “Why weren’t you wearing your seatbelt/helmet?” And “what made you think your stubbed toe/toothache/runny nose was an emergency at 3 AM?”
Hi, I’m a medical student. You might know me from my greatest hits including “hey, I’m sorry to bother you, just wanted to ask if...,” “excuse me, sorry, but where is the...,” “hello operator, would you mind paging...” and “is there anything else I can help with?”
One week ago today I was doing CPR on my 8 year old son for a cardiac arrest. Today he came home apparently neurologically intact with a new sternotomy scar and AICD/pacemaker.
I’m so very grateful to everyone who made this possible.
@SuprSquirrel
@brendonurie
I’m guessing they don’t want racist, misogynist morons using their music to promote their racist misogynist ideologies at political rallies.
It’s worth losing a few “fans” to take a stand.
@TaisonBell
@LadyDoctorSays
I learned this sculpture was to portray a parent who had lost a child. I am so sorry for your loss and hope you find peace amidst this callous and chaotic time.
September 22nd my kiddo had a cardiac arrest. Today he went back to his third grade class with his new AICD for the first time & stayed the whole day & came home with a big smile on his face.
That is all.
Things I’ve learned working in the ER:
Don’t drink & drive
Don’t smoke
Don’t get up to go to the bathroom at night after age 70
Don’t climb ladders
Wear your seatbelt
If you’re on blood thinners wear a helmet at all times.
Especially if you wake up & have to use the bathroom
Jesus Christ my timeline is turning into a cesspool of MAGA morons and “Michael Obama” jokes and Paul Whelan stans/Britney Griner haters…
Been blocking nonstop for weeks and it keeps getting worse.
Fuck you,
@elonmusk
You’re an attention whore and a buffoon.
Our ER is holding over 70 admissions tonight.
I’ll be praying to Jesus. But not because he’s the son of God, but because he was a carpenter and maybe he can build us some more rooms.
@LGlaucomflecken
@LtUhura2017
Almost three years since I did CPR on my 8 year old son on the floor of a Target. He recovered fully, but I still can’t think about it for more than a few seconds without coming unraveled.
Kudos to you for your decisive action and resilience in the face of catastrophe.
Thank you all.
My 8 y/o son had a V-tach arrest today while we were out shopping. Didn’t see it. Thought he fell & hit his head & knocked out
Turns out he inherited my bad ❤️ Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
He’s extubated & waking up a bit. Hoping no anoxic brain injury
Only put 8 in the ICU tonight in 4 hours.
Only 53 admissions holding in the ER at 5 am.
Kinda slow, wish it would get busy...🙄
Fuck all you non-mask wearing, COVID-denying motherfuckers.
Dear everyone:
Just because it’s health care, doesn’t mean it’s a life & death emergency.
Health care providers get to eat. Sit down a minute to chart.
Laugh with a coworker.
Decide themselves how to prioritize their patient care duties.
You. Can. Wait.
You’re. Not. Dying.
A big healthy FUCK YOU to every person in this thread calling for a lawsuit against the doctor performing the procedure.
Literally every second counts. An extra minute may mean the difference between alive or dead.
This is about as smart as suing for broken ribs during CPR.
My 100 bed ER is now overwhelmed & our hospital has closed to non-critical transfers and is starting to look for ways to transfer patients OUT.
And the case load continues to climb.
And the outlying smaller hospitals will all be overwhelmed soon.
Please stay home & wear masks.
And then she was gone.
Mom passed peacefully during the night. Because of COVID my sister couldn’t be by her side. I think she was there for her last waking moments & that will have to be enough.
Made her laugh yesterday on a call. Her sense of humor & quick wit already missed.
Hey
@AmericanAir
You just kicked my ex-wife and two sons off of a flight because my 10y/o had a cough.
And then sent their bags on ahead to the destination. With his asthma meds in the bag.
Please explain yourselves?
Just got a call from the hospital. Patient I admitted 5 days ago for a totally unrelated problem developed a fever upstairs and tested positive for COVID.
I was already mask and gloves and goggles and cap last week even in the non-COVID area. For that very reason.
When your first four patients on nightshift have a total of over 40 ER visits in the past month it’s hard to not just drop everything on the floor and walk out and just keep walking until you find a tall cliff or deep water to stop you.
Kind of heartbreaking to see our ICU team come down to the ER to see a new patient, go back upstairs to code an inpatient, then come back to the ER because now they have another open bed.💀
Multiple times each day.
Anyone else have that thing where something terrible happens & you’re feeling okay thinking about it, coping with it, processing it, and then you try to tell someone about it and come completely unglued?
Anyway my kiddo is in the ICU again…
JCAHO sure has been quiet this year. About PPE. About patient safety. About staff safety.
How about when they try to open their useless fucking mouths again we give them the collective middle finger and push the mute button forever. 🖕🏼
@GroupToStopHate
@adamtotscomix
Conservative snowflake triggered by pronouns in Bio.
Oh NOES!! He might have to think for a millisecond before he speaks or (God forbid) respectfully apologize for misgendering someone and maybe feel slightly uncomfortable for a moment. 😱😵
6 months ago my 8 year old son had a cardiac arrest. After a week in the hospital & surgery to implant an epicardial AICD, he came home with a full recovery.
My ex still spends hours every day on the phone going through dozens of bills & collection notices.
This isn’t right.
Getting my older son checked today for HCM trying to explain genetics to him
Me: You know how you get brown eyes or blond hair from one of your parents?
Son: yeah
Me: sometimes you inherit bad things from us too
Son: so am I going to get fat & hairy like you?!?!
Me: 🖕🏼
On top of everything else, kiddo has a pulmonary contusion and sternal/cartilaginous injury from CPR. As much as I want to be angry, thank you to whomever did enthusiastic compressions for erring on the side of perfusion.
He’s getting better. Off the vent tonight or tomorrow 🤞🏼
So my youngest had a cardiac event 5 years ago this week. Yesterday he had another at school and his AICD failed to fire for almost 10 minutes. Luckily there was bystander CPR and he’s awake with a little brain fog but that should clear. Now, why did it fail?
Kiddo going to OR in the morning for epicardial AICD placement. That means sternotomy. This is all incredibly overwhelming. I’m going to close twitter for the day since I’ve seen the other trending news and I just can’t.
Thanks again for the support y’all. 🙏🏼
Why are people having to get flu swabs then a respiratory panel then a CXR and urine antigen for Legionella before they can even be CONSIDERED for a COVID-19 test?
They’ve had drive-thru testing in South Korea for WEEKS!!
This is going to be so very very bad...
Thank you to all of you for your support and prayers and kind thoughts.
Thank you to
@Target
for calling 911 and having an AED and staff trained to use it. I’ve never been more paralyzed by fear.
Thank you to the fire and EMS crew and ED staff.
Night shift quietly took up a collection to get a patient and kiddo a bus ticket home (halfway across the country) last night if you’re wondering why I love my night shift homies.
I’m not crying, YOU’RE crying!
All I need to know about COVID is that in 20 years of emergency medicine I don’t recall ever seeing chest X-rays & CT scans that look like the ones I see almost daily now.
It’s a different animal. We will both overreact AND under react to it for a long time until it’s understood
The difference between dayshift & night shift.
Nurse: Swallows Dr. Pepper wrong & starts coughing loudly. “Damn! I almost choked on that!”
Me: “You? Everyone knows you don’t have a gag reflex.”
Night shift: “Hahahaha! Good one!”
Day shift: 20 phones hit “HR” on speed dial.
Blood pressure 185/90? Ok to discharge home.
Blood pressure of 185/90 being admitted for minor medical issue unrelated to elevated blood pressure? Cannot be admitted to regular floor bed or telemetry bed until pressure below some nebulous magic number.
Kill. Me. Please.
@MsEricaDixon
Thank everyone around you who DOES vaccinate for your children’s good fortune.
H. flu kills kids. Strep pneumo kills kids. Measles kills kids. Influenza kills kids. Polio & smallpox used to kill kids until vaccines eliminated them.
But keep crowing about how awesome YOU are.
@RadioFreeTom
Come work in my ER. Or any ER in the country.
It’s an ongoing disaster, we’re still treading water & losing staff to burnout daily.
But sure. Mocking those trying to prevent disaster & saying “See! It wasn’t so bad!” Is really helpful to all the medical staff & dying patients.
Question for ICU nurses primarily.
What would you think of IV pumps that notified you via phone/pager/Vocera a minute or two before your alarm starts going off in the room?
Give you a chance to fix the problem before it wakes up the patient…
Asking for my kid in the ICU…
I think all charts should be flagged on days with sub-par staffing ratios. Or flagged with the current staff-patient ratio at the time seen.
Then those charts can easily be reviewed en-masse for bad outcomes and poor satisfaction scores and prolonged dwell-times.
@911GlockDoc
To all he asshats in this thread piping up about “This is really bad, but essential oils worked for my X”
You’re part of the problem.
Take a look in the mirror. Stop believing in magic. Some moron out there may believe you and do the same stupid shit this lady did.
I’m adding a new triage level. Level zero.
It’s where you tell the patient “Follow me. We will find you a room.”
Then you walk them out to the parking lot and point at their car and say “get in that thing and drive home to your room”
If you make a crack about vaccines being bad I will shame you in front of everyone. I don’t care if we are at work. At dinner. If you are a family member of a patient. Coworker.
I. Don’t. Care. You spread that shit I squash you like a mosquito.
I’m not sure how two patients under the age of forty with no medical diagnoses can have a combined 30+ ER visits over the past 6 months.
But I’m super super excited to find out!
Narrator: “He’s not super excited to find out. He’s dead inside.”
@SummerPMHNP
Sadly, it isn’t the healthcare system that failed us. It is our fellow citizens and myriad federal, state and local politicians who have failed.
The healthcare system could never realistically be designed to handle this patient load for this long.
Well. My 12 y/o got sent home from school Monday to quarantine after a student tested positive Friday.
He tested positive for COVID today. He’s asymptomatic and I’m not too worried.
His 11 y/o brother has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
I’m quite worried about that.
Update on my kiddo and his heart surgery.
Had open heart unroofing of an LAD myocardial bridge. 7cm (crazy long). Surgery was @ 11 hrs. Lots of scar tissue and some bleeding mishaps.
The surgeons (two attendings) managed to get everything under control but elected to leave
If you come to the ER late at night because you checked your blood pressure at home & it was “high” please bring the cuff with you
I’ll be smashing it to tiny pieces and that will help lower MY blood pressure quite a bit
The primary doc who ordered it for you can reimburse you
This is my 743rd consecutive shift seeing a patient in the ER solely for having checked their blood pressure at home for no reason and it was high.
When I die I promise to haunt every doctor who tells patients to check BP at home and every manufacturer of home BP devices.
Joe Biden’s son isn’t banned from ever operating a charity in the state of New York like Trump’s three oldest children are.
I’ll take a loving father and a son in recovery over a family that steals from a children’s charity 100/100 times.
Kyle Rittenhouse, 18, crosses state lines with an AR-15 to “protect businesses from rioters” kills two but is “just a kid.”
Adam Toledo, 13, runs from police, turns around unarmed and shot dead, and we hear, “13 year olds can be dangerous too!”
Not really sure why our hospital, with no ICU beds and an ER holding over 60 admissions, is accepting ICU transfers. But I’m sure glad those administrators accepting them are going to be down here in the trenches to help out with th....
Oh. Yeah. Right.
🖕🏼
This is an invaluable technique to teach students. I’ve never come across a finger that it didn’t work on. Although some required a digital block first...
I feel like emergency medicine has become an abusive and unsustainable system. Customer service requirements and endless protocols and abuse of staff by patients and understaffing and neglect by administrations.
Dear patient/family/etc.
The reason you have not been discharged/admitted/updated yet is because you are not more important than the patients who are sicker/have been here longer/or my sanity because I need a fucking 5-minute break.
Thanks for understanding.
@PaulieFromNJ
@gerardkcohen
Keystone pipeline jobs were always going to be temp jobs (at least 90% of them)
And they were government contracts.
And show me where Twitter EMPLOYEES, as a group, disrespected the pipeline workers?
Or just get bent.
I’ve never felt this hopeless.
Ever.
Not even close.
Not this much suffocating dread.
Not that we won’t get through this.
We will.
But that we won’t learn from it.
We won’t be better for having survived it.
It will all be for nothing.
Take a profession rife with stress, anxiety & sleep deprivation, add in some arbitrary documentation/ practice mandates, sprinkle on some behavioral constraints like “don’t ever show frustration/exasperation/annoyance in front of the ‘customer’”
And act surprised by burnout 🤔
So 22 days ago I was sitting at the airport on my way to say goodbye to Mom when she passed.
Today I’m sitting at the airport waiting for my flight home from visiting Dad in hospice & He finally slipped away to join her.
Airports & the “very merry month of May” can kiss my ass
And then she was gone.
Mom passed peacefully during the night. Because of COVID my sister couldn’t be by her side. I think she was there for her last waking moments & that will have to be enough.
Made her laugh yesterday on a call. Her sense of humor & quick wit already missed.
@glenntu
@chuckwoolery
Yeah, bruh.
I’m waiting on my big pharma kickback so I can go play golf and lie about all the people sick and dying in my ER where I’ve worked for almost 20 years and NEVER seen anything like this. It’s not one dumb POTUS, it’s tens of thousands of co-conspirators!!!
@mtracey
Comparing direct occupational hazard (accidents and injuries) to risk of being targeted for assassination is wildly disingenuous and misleading.
Nurses or doctors against “vaccine passports.”
Don’t you have to have vaccines to do your jobs? To protect yourself and your patients?
Don’t your kids have to have vaccines to go to school?
What’s the real difference?
No matter how much I may have liked and respected you as a person, there are a few things that will negate that immediately.
Add anti-vaccine, anti-mask to the list.
The list is long. And getting longer every day.
No.
Cardiac floor nurse.
I’m NOT addressing the potassium of 3.4 in the ER before sending the patient up to you.
But I’ll be happy to send you a big bag of dicks to eat.
I’m officially naming the isolation wing of our 100-bed ER.
COVID Cove.
Will be requesting a margarita machine, hammocks and beach umbrellas from management.
Starting an OnlyFans but for answering your ER/medical questions while sitting on the couch in my underwear.
The more you tip, the less of my hairy body you have to see to get your answer.
2mg doses of morphine in adults are about as effective as a pat on the shoulder and a “there, there”
Can we just stop it with the narcotic fear for ER and inpatient care? It’s absurd.
@protonenpumpe
@WelshGasDoc
@pescum
At 3% mortality and that rate of spread it is still likely to be economically catastrophic. And the mortality rate will be much higher in many regions. And autocrats (like Trump) will try to hide the numbers to protect themselves, thus enabling more unchecked transmission.
One of my kids made a joke about dogs eating poop last night. The rest of the drive home was me explaining how a fecal transplant works. My kids are so lucky to have me.
Alrighty, y’all. I’m getting married today. And to celebrate yet another doctor/nurse relationship, I want to hear your best phrase that can be used between Dr. & RN or in the bedroom.
I’ll start.
“Would you prefer intermittent or constant suction?”
Enough to keep him
off the transplant list for a while.
The surgeons did an amazing job dealing with a lot of surprises and what sounds like unique challenges in a difficult case.
The ICU staff, anesthesia, nursing and everyone involved has my thanks and respect.
Dear doctors,
Please tell your patients with the flu that they likely will not feel better for at LEAST a few days.
I’m tired of seeing patients in the ER that were “diagnosed with flu yesterday and I don’t feel better”
I’m watching the staff shuck oysters while drinking at the bar and just waiting for the inevitable laceration...
This is how ER docs see the world. All accidents waiting to happen. All. The. Time.
As a man in a competitive surgical speciality who has endured serious turmoil over his “Take a knee” politics, I think we should approach
@eugenegu
behavior with compassion and tolerance and search for a solution mutually beneficial...😂😂😂
Just kidding. Fuck that shitbag.
If we are going to run medicine like a service industry, I’m going to put tip jars out.
Want your pain medicine or nausea medicine a little quicker? Fill that jar. M
Wanna move to the front of the CT line? See that jar?....
When dating nurses, one must be prepared for them to fixate on the good veins in your hand & forearm…even during the most intimate moments…
It could be that you’re just not doing a good enough job to distract them. But remember, they also might find those veins very sexy. 🤷🏼♂️
