As we mark 20 years since the U.S invasion, I wrote a personal reflection as the daughter of the diaspora on how migrating between East and West shaped my identity as I grappled with its early politicization.

Gut-wrenching. Here is Riham Yaqoub - a young activist and doctor protesting against the corruption in Basra. Today she’s been gruesomely murdered at the hands of militia. An absolute sad day in Iraq today. (1)
Of all the touching moments of the Gulf Cup, a beautiful one was seeing Assyrian Iraqi Maria Farhad Salem, dressed as the Sumerian Queen Shabaad to award the national team.
In 2014, she and her family were forced to move from Mosul to Erbil amid ISIS terrorist attacks.
Favorite place: Mutannabi Street in Baghdad. With its almost inexhaustible supply of books - its a community of artists, writers, poets, political enthusiasts gather to share the love for culture.
Tell me Iraqis are generous without telling me Iraqis are generous:
Seen at a restaurant in Baghdad - a warning sign against paying another persons bill.
When I asked why this was put up, the owner said they had many disputes between people trying to pay for each other.
Protests in Iraq have reignited this month under a more unified and organized front. After the murders of many journalists and activists, the protests slogan “Who Killed Me” is a call for accountability and justice for victims.
Diaspora often blindly love their country because they have a longing for a country that only exists in their mind, an idealized version of home created through stories told by their parents
Todays womens march in Baghdad. Today our womens voices echo across every province in Iraq. If you look closely- the men have created a wall surrounding the women as protection.

I found these books on housing policies in Iraq from 1956. They were developed by consulting engineers in Greece for the Iraqi government. It has maps, surverys, implementation strategies and plans for urban centers and financing. I bought all 7 volumes.

I’d like to highlight a popular Iraqi saying on Baghdad Mutannabi street; a street of art and books.
For context the books remain out overnight in the street and the reason is because Iraqis say “readers don’t steal and thieves don’t read.”
How do you condemn the killing and ethnic cleansing in one country but proudly support the murderous dictatorship in another?
This activism has not a single shred of humanity.
Only in Iraq do you find people coming to buy books and art at 9:00 PM on a Saturday
#حق_طيبة is trending in Iraq after Teeba was killed by her father as he strangled her in her sleep. She was killed under the false flag of honor to protect the family reputation after reports of her exposing her brother harassing her.
Police were aware of threats & did nothing.
This past month I went on an enlightening journey. I was approached by a friend to join a happiness course by the

organization. Being the sceptic that I am I was hesitant to join especially with social medias hyper-emphasis on wellness .. (1/n) 🧵
Iraq isnt arab. Some are Arabs yes, but it isn’t an arab country, its a diversified society. Calling it arab erases the complex culture and myriad ethnicities within Iraq. Kurds, Turkmen, Assyrians, Mandeans, Yazidis - calling Iraq arab neglects them.
At one of my favorite monuments by the late Jawad Saleem in Tahrir (Liberation) Square, Baghdad.
‘It symbolizes the people's struggle against tyranny and paid homage to Iraq's deep art history by including Abbasid and Babylonian wall-reliefs.’
Today I visited Ur in Iraq, the city where Muslims Jews and Christians believe their common spiritual forefather Abraham first heard the voice of God. Today is the anniversary of Pope Francis’ historic visit in 2021 where he preached inter-religious tolerance and fraternity. 🧵
I bought this book from Mutannabi st in Baghdad. Twenty pages in and I find this this order receipt from USSR Moscow.
Baghdad is really the place of bottomless treasures
Code of Hammurabi (1750 BC), from
Babylonia (modern-day Iraq). It was discovered in 1901, by French archaeological exploration team.
Code of Hammurabi remains one of oldest known systems of codified laws in human history. It not only has historical value but literary and…

This brave iraqi girl is facing backlash for holding her head high after a male principle attempts to shove her into submission for arrranging a school protest
IDC what these male chauvinists say, her grace and strength is commendable.
Iraqi film ‘Hanging Gardens’ directed by

has been submitted to the Oscars. What an accomplishment. This film deserves all the recognition and we couldn’t be more proud.

Riham was outspoken, definitely patriotic and the epitome of the independent woman. She was, in large part, a symbol of the Iraq we as Iraqi peoples, but especially women would like to exist in. Not holding accountable the murders will forever demolish a hope in that Iraq. (2)
“Iraq is not Arab, it is a diversified society, I define myself as: Iraqi first and last without Arabism- and I am very proud of being Arab - but some of our partners in this homeland are not, so its flawed to say that we are an Arab country out of respect for them.”

The robe is a ‘Bisht’ and it stands as the Arab symbol of Royalty. The Prince here donning him with the robe to symbolize Messi being the Prince of Football.
I think it’s a charming gesture and adds to the historical significance of the moment on many levels.
The term “ISIS brides” urks me. ‘Most’ these women weren’t just brainwashed bystanders. They were very much complicit in the beatings and torture of Yazidi women that were kidnapped and forced into sexual labour. They were part of the system. They are ISIS.
Happy Akitu! 🌼🤍
Akitu is the Assyrian- Babylonian New Year & was celebrated during the spring as it marked the rebirth of nature.
Akitu is one of the oldest recorded festivals in the world. May we celebrate and protect Iraqs religious diversity. 🕊️🌼🇮🇶
I’d say I accidentally matched with the paintings at The Gallery but since I don’t believe in coincidences it only makes sense that it was part of the great synchrocities of life that, on womens day, I have almost become one with the painting on the wall. A painting that
Abu Fatma is my favorite librarian in Baghdad. He is the key to Baghdads greatest treasures. In Mutannabi you’ll find him.
He is not a bookseller, he is a walking library, a teacher and a shelter for knowledge- seeking souls.
God bless him.
“This 100 year old house in Baghdad was once owned by Agatha Christie. Agatha specially mentions this house autobiography.”
Unfortunately this house is now for sale
