once on a plane i finished a book, tucked it away and pulled out another one and the guy next to me was like
"you didn't even blink. you just immediately .... like OMG ... you just had a backup book and started reading immediately."
my superpower! <3
yesterday my sister welcomed my immediate family
( mom and dad and my brother and sister-in-law and their kids) for a bbq
for my nieces and nephew (upon greeting)
"what is more comfortable? hug? handshake? fistbump:? or would you rather go through to the yard?"
1/2
@broknmanHFXpier
and this is where ppl can have intelligent nuanced discussion. rather than deeming women aren't intellectually curious it considers that perhaps men and women are interested in difference facets of history :-)
2/2 when i was a kid i had no choice. adults would touch me and hug me and rub my shoulders. i hated it. normalize asking kids ( even those related to you) what makes them feel most comfortable in the mood they're in my nieces love hugs. my nephew likes a good fistbump
i don't think many people know exactly HOW much research goes into writing historical fiction. 90 percent never ends up in the book, of course, but i researched it all anyways
I've never listened to an audiobook because I've never liked being read to but if they're your jam then go for it. Same words. Just a different way of engaging with them. Totally legit. Totally count as reading. Not sure why there's any stigma on this.
number one piece of publishing advice?
don't quit your day job
don't ever enter this world anticipating that it will be your main source of income
ppl who do this full time either have independent wealth, a partner or spouse with a great job or win the rare pub lottery
for any author who has ever submitted something and gone back and found a huge mistake and panicked, here is a starbucks cup in a multi billion dollar game of thrones. everyone makes mistakes.
i literally have 400 new followers since sunday evening
like what???
hi!
i am a nerd
i live in toronto
i write books for harper collins
i am a lit agent
my fav movie is master and commander
i read a lot
i love hallmark christmas movies
hi!
nothing about Romeo and Juliet is romantic to me. i don't even consider it a love story.
screwed up lust story between two 14 year olds with a few banger lines by Mercutio? yes. that's my takeaway
re: the convo around being alone + how since i was a child i was perfectly content off on my own reading or writing. are bookish ppl, to some extent, pre-dispositioned to be used to their own company? i've always loved being alone and wonder if that is bc i'm a lifelong bookworm
I've signed seven new authors in the past 10 days. One I had been courting for a year. One where I took four months before getting back to her. I'm really stoked for everyone ๐
@AuthorLMDavis
i was disappointed you referred to an adult creator as "this girl" and then posited that b/c she was Nigerian she was "already going to be an author." Copyright Infringement or not, the writing community should always show a modicum of respect.
Email dinged. Just got a query. It's almost 11. But it might not be almost 11 where the querying author is. So, not an issue. Remember that, authors. I remember someone shaming an author for sending a late email. It's on me when I decide to open and respond. Not you. โฅ๏ธ
last month i had to check into emerg (stress related, turns out) and i posted about it to insta and someone said "since you're in the waiting room do you have time to read my query?
i immediately deleted the query letter and blocked the sender.
so toxic
listen, i am a literary agent. i have worked in publishing for 20 yrs and still when i see someone type PB i first think PEANUT BUTTER and then think paperback
Listen I'm a 95 Pride and Prejudice girl. Full stop. Forever. I was a kid and I watched it so much I wore out the vhs ( yes we had to take one tape out and put the other in. Dinosaur times ) but if you like the 2005 I'm not going to rain on your parade. Like what you like
i am absolutely 100000 percent in disagreement with this statement
i owe escapism and enjoyment
and if someone learns a little something about history or music or a place or time then that is awesome.
i am not a failure and neither are my 20 published books
Guys I really hate the term "clean" for describing closed door or fade to black romance novels. Its just layered with all sorts of unnecessary connotations and frankly sounds a little judgy. I know I post this every so often but we need a new term
i literally DO NOT CARE if you mock me about loving watching Hallmark Christmas movies in October
come at me
i truly do not care
life is hard. i like Christmas movies with romance.
i am not harming ANYONE by loving them
find joy in your own doses.
the most valuable thing i own is a book that belonged to LM Montgomery. it has her notes in the margins. it was gifted to me by the owner of a bookstore i worked at. he found it at an estate sale and knew i would appreciate it.
its sentimental and financial value are immense
if you put words on a page that you create then YOU ARE AN AUTHOR
i don't care if it is published by you or a publisher or your cat...
YOU ARE AN AUTHOR
gosh, if i pass on your book you can still ask me questions or engage here :-)
i might not be the best champion for your book but that doesn't mean another agent won't love it! it is NOT personal
please still be part of the community i am trying to grow :-)
I just offered rep to someone who initially queried me in May. Sometimes it takes awhile for me. I have to read a lot and I have to carefully consider. So hold tight, authors โฅ๏ธ. Many agents are the same
I had a coworker a few years back who said her fiance โdoesnโt eat leftover foodโ so she had to cook every night and like, I truly think about it every day? I did not realize this was an option? Let alone a genre of person? How does anyone live to adulthood this way
in conclusion i wish i could sign all of you. even in the genres i know nothing about
because i know how hard you're working and how much work this takes and how much of a slice of your soul leaves you when you submit a query letter or MS
while it comes to its close, can we have a moment for the sheer writing genius of
@KimsConvenience
which is the only sitcom in the world that can make me laugh and cry at once.
@Eric_Conn
It's sad and ridiculous that a professing man of God refers to women as "ho's" and "used mattresses". With that kind of language how can I expect to look at you as a figure of authority ?
@Kimistry_D
and i don't mind the question (if phrased differently and w authentic curiousity ) but then i went to his twitter page and egads. it was rage bait and he's a bit of a disaster
My biggest red flag in a query is someone saying they refuse to change something. If this is you please self pub. I may not request a change but an editor could. You can't go into this gig without expecting to be malleable
Not every literary agent ( myself included ) is on query manager. So make sure to keep googling, keep checking in the acknowledgements of your favourite books for who repped it and keep an eye on pub marketplace and pub weekly.
so as a fan of romance i am happy that romcoms are making money at the box office
but i really want more romcoms with actors who don't look like supermodels.
you know?
@roger_hoss
@RevDaniel
woman here.
@RevDaniel
can femsplain for me til the cows come home. i know i am one of THOUSANDS of women who feel the same way. he wasn't femsplaining but if he was? he's earned it <3
can't post more info yet but for my birthday i went out and got myself a literary agent
having re-upped my last two deals on my own i am SO excited to have that support system again
my number one piece of publishing advice? it's kinda the same as my number one piece of life advice:
always be happy for other people.
practice being happy for other people.
b/c if it is ever your turn you will see how amazing it is for someone to be THAT elated for you
This is the exact opposite of what I dreamt of as a kid. There's not one moment in my history where I thought this would be my ideal life. When I was a kid I dreamt of travel and writing stories. It's the same now.
No makeup on zoom calls today. This is huge for me and my self confidence/body dysmorphia issues. It was hard not to look back and think " did I screw this up by not wearing makeup?" We do the best we can.
one piece of advice for querying authors? buy one month of publisher's marketplace and search every agent, every deal in your genre, every acquiring editor, every keyword, every deal of the day. it will help w background info on who to follow and who to query in a targeted way
Omg people posting about hallmark movies " but I found it kinda predictable" that's like watching a michael bay movie and being shocked something blew up.
I don't believe made for tv Christmas movies are meant for the criticism afforded the other films these ppl watch.
One thing to note querying authors is that we want to hear the spoiler in the pitch. I know you're used to not giving it away but the major incidents and secrets help us decide if we want to read the manuscript โฅ๏ธ so spoil away
you don't need ANY of this to be a successful debut author
there's no such thing as a wasted word and i am certain he has heightened his craft but i have signed and sold dozens of books from writers w/out these credits

i am a nerd for church architectural history
Ppl loving on the lack of conflict in Gilded Age is a great reminder for writers. Sometimes ppl just want to live in the story and with the characters. Not everything has to be a fast-paced, conflict ridden tale
All the books are my favourite this year. If you wrote a book you're my favourite this year. Whether you indie or trad pubbed it. Whether it's been rejected 22 times or sits in draft form on your computer or in a notebook or even in your head. It's hard to write. You did it.
this adobe sign may not look flashy but it is my favourite kind of Christmas present: signing to write more books with Harper Collins!
I CAN tell you that I am SO overjoyed to be delving into true historical stories set in Austria + London!
okay team !
truly fun story for you
remember when i fell absolutely in love with a proposal and wouldn't stop tweeting about it?
and then i had a zoom with the author and WOULDN'T stop tweeting about it?
she accepted my offer of representation! WHEEE!
