I am grief-stricken over the death of Kofi Annan. Kofi was the epitome of human decency and grace. In a world now filled with leaders who are anything but that, the world’s loss becomes even more painful. He was a friend to thousands and a leader of millions.
Venezuela’s bloody wounds — inflicted by Maduro on his own people, are only widening. The sooner the international community throws its complete weight behind Guaido, the country’s legitimate leader, the better.
Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein appointed next President & CEO of IPI
“Zeid’s reputation precedes him. Around the world he is deeply respected for his integrity, ethical leadership, and commitment to human rights,” says IPI Chair

We are delighted to welcome three new Elders to the group, as we continue to fulfil Mandela’s mandate: support courage where there is fear, foster agreement where this is conflict and inspire hope where there is despair.
Pakistan and India striking matches next to an ammo dump — could anything be more dangerous? At the heart of the present crisis is a human rights crisis — as highlighted by the U.N.’s June 2018 report. To the U.N. Human Rights Council and UN Security Council — wake up!!
Two survivors of massacres, two gentle but brave and determined souls fighting for the rights of others have won the Nobel peace prize. Congratulations Nadia and Denis — so richly deserved!
UN’s policy of not allowing its staff to march against racism is as pathetic as it is moronic — how can you be neutral between what is unquestionably right and what is clearly wrong? Staff should just ignore it.
This makes UN decision to block participation in protests problematic. If Bunche were arrested at Selma would it really have tarnished the UN's reputation. The contrary.
Davos ... every time the same: five days of exhaustive analysis followed by 360 days of global paralysis, five days of analysis again, paralysis again, repeat — many times over & the world continues to become more dangerous ...
22 years ago today, we adopted the Rome Statute & celebrated. Resistance to ICC was expected — and it came. What was not anticipated was apathy from parties to the statute. World too dangerous now for lackluster positions. Support the Court

Today, 70th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights — whose goal, according to key contributor PC Chang, was “to build up better [ie moral] human beings.” Achieved in many places at grass roots level, but sadly not at the highest political levels & we need it now!
Appalling price of not standing up to bullies. 25 yrs later, I remember how agonizing those hours on 10/11th were — when UN could have asked NATO to block Maldic and it didn’t. Long intimidated by him, it misread him completely. Even today, UN is still too easy to intimidate.
This year, they made traditional coffee in Srebrenica for all their loved ones killed during the Bosnian genocide in 1995. 8372 cups of coffee for the 8372 boys and men. 25 years later they’re deeply missed.
I found this deeply moving.

Very proud of my daughter (front row centre) — along with all her school friends (Greta’s moral army) she participated noisily in last Friday’s climate march in NYC.
#gretathunberg

We are so proud of our daughter for organizing this climate action at her school in NYC! Given all the bitter news recently — including attack in NZ + painful loss of UN colleagues in Ethiopia last week, a brilliant ray of hope shines from the remarkable Greta Thunberg & friends
A victim of torture who survived to become an ardent opponent to it, John McCain was an honorable man, a good man, who served his country with distinction. He will be sorely missed.
At the entrance of the red rooster restaurant in Harlem ... remembering a sorely-missed giant and his wisdom! If only we had leaders around the world who were just a slice of Mandela — instead of the many mean-minded ones we do have, would we not be in a better place today?
US needs a bipartisan national commission or dialogue involving former presidents, civil rights leaders, grass roots civil society, the human rights community & religious organizations to end the polarization, racism, inequalities and all feelings of alienation ... urgently.
Suu Kyi had once earned the admiration of millions around the world — when she was denied her freedom, now she is an advocate in Court explaining away the cruelties of the Burmese military in relation to the Rohingya and passing them off as counter-terrorism. Disgusting ...
“It is not power that corrupts but fear,” Ms. Suu Kyi wrote while under house arrest. “Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it.” She has proved she’s no exception to that rule.

Happy 100th birthday to one of the great human beings of this world

— prosecutor at Nuremberg and, in this photo, giving us delegates at the ICC review conference, Kampala 2010, a kick in the pants (with humour) urging us to do right thing on crime of aggression.
Sri Lanka — a beautiful country with a tortured past & now these appalling bombings against a Christian community hitherto un-targeted. While awaiting the evidence, can’t help but wonder: who benefits from such wickedness? Do the upcoming elections have anything to do with it?
I’m tired of hearing this silly word polycrisis. There’s only one crisis: mediocre global leadership. Its symptoms are everywhere: the failures to prevent war, to limit carbon emissions & to secure humanity from the threat of nukes, pathogens& Ai, to safeguard human rights …
Today I am releasing my final report as UN Special Rapporteur. I find that global poverty is rising, and that a decade of misplaced triumphalism has exacerbated the worst impacts of the pandemic.
My statement: .

V. sad over John Lewis — whose almost unbelievable physical courage (freedom rider & w/ Hosea Williams first across the bridge in Selma ‘65 ... straight into an inevitable beating) was equalled by a deep moral integrity. A fine, fine leader — gone today, on Mandela’s birthday.
Feeling sad over the loss of the children who were swept away by the floods yesterday in the area of the Dead Sea .... our thoughts are with the families of the victims.

With the Elders at the Nguenyyiel refugee camp, Ethiopia. These courageous refugee women expose themselves everyday to a high risk of sexual violence while collecting firewood for their families & the men stay safe at home, unwilling to lift a finger — utterly inexcusable!
Terrific decision by the Court, although I had little doubt it could be otherwise. Myanmar must now abide by it — as it said it would prior to the decision. Will ASSK now finally understand?
What again?! Now an attack on a Synagogue in California — absolutely terrible! Coming only days after the cruel Takfiri bombings of Christian worshippers in Sri Lanka and weeks after Christchurch. This madness has to stop!

Looking outside, some don’t seem to grasp what’s happening here. It’s basic probability — the more coronavirus speads, the more likely it’ll mutate into a strain that’ll savage humanity across all age groups irrespective of pre-existing health. Self-imposed isolation means life.
I enjoyed talking to Imogen (a terrific journalist!). When I say it’s odd how with so many v. smart people involved, UN discussions are still so basic & I mentioned ‘primary school’ — I shouldn’t have. Quality discussions do exist, but too many are also devoid of deep analysis.

Coronavirus, Brexit, denial of witnesses in US Senate, the ME Peaceless Plan — further signs of our undoing & centrifugal. When pitted against weak global moral leadership, one can’t but help be reminded of Salvador Dali’s haunting masterpiece ‘Violetes imperials’.

IOM Mourns Death of Former Director-General William Lacy Swing | Mirage News … v. v. sad over Bill’s passing. He was a brilliant and courageous man, charming and so gentle & someone who did not know what fatigue was. Will be sorely missed.
V. sad to learn of the passing of Sir Hans Kornberg, former master of Christ’s College — a gentle soul w/ a lovely sense of humour. He used to say he’d check the obituaries daily to see if he was in them! Now he’s there— I imagine him smiling, content over a life v. well spent.

I respect Martin Wolf & today’s piece is good... he doesn’t need to revert to Aristotle to make his point though, human rights have come a long way since 1948. Economists ought to recognize their importance explicitly & not shy away from referring to them.
This previous tweet came out before it became known who was behind the murderous attacks perpetrated against the Christian community in Sri Lanka — attacks which I condemn & which have no connection to the internal situation in the country.
