attorney though I really don’t need more work.
Kamala Harris asks Barr whether anyone at the White House asked or suggested that he open an investigation into anyone
Barr doesn’t answer
Barr: “I’m trying to grapple with the word ‘suggest.’”
The 1997 Flores Agreement that the Trump Administration is now attacking does not call for separating families.
Flores was a hard fought victory to prevent child abuse and detention.
Do not let anyone tell you otherwise

I got my green card on this day four years ago.
It stopped my deportation and changed my life.
It happened with just click of a cursor.
The USCIS officer went on her computer and changed my status from undocumented to lawful resident.
I want the same for everyone else.
I’ve been an attorney for Berkeley’s undocumented student program for 2+ years now. I still don’t have an office on campus. I still get locked out of buildings. I still don’t have rooms to use for meetings with students. Berkeley doesn’t care about us.
There’s a loud silence coming from
@UCBerkeley
, the birth of free speech movement, as it pertains to the detention of their student Luis Mora.

I cannot believe that the Supreme Court has halted hearings, federal courts have ordered closures, NDCA has ordered courts to shut down till May 1, and somehow immigration courts are still open.
Recreational marijuana is now legal in California but if you're a non-citizen, you absolutely cannot be caught by feds in possession of marijuana or admit to using it. No, not even for health problems.
With
#MAGABomber
and
#MAGAshooter
, it's painfully obvious that the biggest threat to Americans is not refugees at the border, but its own home-bred terrorists.
Nothing in U.S. immigration law or the Flores agreement requires the U.S. government to detain asylum seekers, separate parents from their children, or criminalize asylum seekers.
@chrislhayes
I think we just have to keep being vigilant. I'd love for
@aclu
et al to file a lawsuit to stop the government from criminally prosecuting those with asylum claims.

recipients - You know if you lose your job, but you are work authorized, you should be able to collect unemployment, right? Check your state EDD for more details.
Happy 420 to citizens.
Immigrants/non-immigrants can still get deported/denied admission and adjustment for use/possession of marijuana even in states where it is legal.
Thank you
@POTUS
The Trump Administration, by blaming the Flores settlement agreement for their despicable policies, is literally trying to open the door to prolonged abuse and detention of children.
Do not let them come after Flores.
Hi Ale! I remember you were in charge of USCIS when your agency issued an NTA to remove me from the United States.
Now that I’m a US citizen and lawyer, I hope our second go-around is a little less contentious.
It is an honor to be nominated and entrusted by the President-elect to serve. It is no small task to lead the Department of Homeland Security, but I will work to restore faith in our institutions, and protect our security here at home.
There are better ways to abide by Flores than separating parents from their children or trying to overturn a great settlement agreement.
Some ideas:
1) Parole the parents along with the children
2) Release the asylum seekers on an order of recognizance
3) Abolish detention
Kids in cages not new.
Deportations aren’t new.
Prosecutions for unlawful (re)entry not new.
Ankle bracelets on migrants not new.
Targeting political activists isn’t new.
Turning away people trying to claim asylum isn’t new.
But all of these have increased under Trump. 🤓
Flores did three things:
1. Require govt. to release children from detention without delay
2. If sponsor isn't found, govt. is required to place children in least restrictive setting
3. Require govt. to set standards for care in detention for children
USCIS officer to my Canadian client: "Did you intend to stay in the US indefinitely when you last entered the country?"
Canadian: "Are you crazy?"

Luis Mora, a pre-law junior at
@UCBerkeley
, has been detained at CBP since Saturday night after he made a wrong turn on a highway and drove to a port of entry.
He would be eligible for many iterations of the
#DREAMAct
, currently pending before Congress.
Help us secure his release
USCIS EAD issuances are taking 12-14 months with a backlog of 1.5 million applications. People are losing their jobs and livelihoods.
Please at least issue one year (instead of 6 month) auto extensions, if you’ve no plans to address this!
@USCISDirector
@AliMayorkas
Did you know USCIS will reject your asylum application if you don't write your name on the back of your passport photo with a pencil instead of a pen?
They want perfection from us and yet they are literally the most incompetent agency.
🙃
It's unacceptable to be taking 12-14 months to produce an EAD. We used to have regulations requiring production of EADS within 90 days of filing AOS but our good friend Obama got rid of that on his way out of office and here we are.
Just won a major immigration court case for a UC Berkeley parent and student in an 18-page single-spaced decision by the IJ. They called my cellphone, cried and asked me when I’m coming back to work because this wouldn’t have happened without me. My heart just broke.
Law and justice prevailed today. Luis Mora has been granted the absolute minimum bond and we’re heading to ICE to pay it now so he is released today.

Being an
#immigration
lawyer is one of the most overwhelming jobs right now, and especially as an immigrant. People email from all over the country, often expecting a miracle. It’s tough to carry the hopes and dreams of so many in a system that has no space for it.
I have no words. How about you actually PROCESS the backlogged cases rather than hold a webinar about how you're going to redesign the page so that no one can understand it!
@USCIS
@AOC
Yep,
@HawleyMO
is a terrorist and Section 3 of 14th Amendment clearly demands his immediate removal from office for inciting a rebellion against his own government and colleagues.
All we are asking for is basic due process! It is against our laws and international law and norms to treat asylum seekers and children in this manner.
Be very careful and vigilant about this so-called executive order that Donald Trump is about to sign to
#endfamilyseperation
. Likely keeps families together and flouts Flores settlement agreement. Would love to see an advance text from media
I'm pretty much over the racist abuse of American citizens by the State Department.
My client, who is an esteemed educator and administrator, was denied renewal of his US passport in 2016 because his birth was registered a few years late. (1)
Just devastated to learn that one of my first clients passed away shortly after we got him a hard fought green card. Some ten years in removal proceedings. Still waiting on that physical card to arrive. What a sham.
FACT: Coming to the US border or any port of entry is the PROPER way of asking for asylum.
The only other way to do so is if you’re already here.
This is how asylum works. People cannot apply for asylum from abroad.
Over 2,000 children have been separated from their parents but ending Flores is not the answer. We must treat refugees and asylum seekers better and end the practice of detaining, criminalizing and deporting them.
#abolishice
#enddetention
Right now, the Trump Administration is attacking asylum seekers on many fronts:
1. Seeking criminal prosecutions against them
2. Separating them from their children so they give up and leave
3. Trying to (illegally) narrow asylum laws to exclude domestic violence survivors
The virus is already here, and MAGAheads are the ones saying to open up everything by protesting about stay at home orders so how does this proposed
#immigration
ban make any logical sense?
.
@curtisatlaw
and I sued USCIS on July 15th after they denied citizenship to a Vietnam War veteran claiming he committed fraud upon entry in 1985; the government reversed course two weeks later and is now scheduling him for an oath ceremony. Happy Sunday.
Are people just not working at
@USCIS
Nebraska Service Center?
16 months to produce a work permit that really takes only 7 minutes to process by their own admission.
Maybe they should let immigrants in to do the jobs Americans won't do?
I keep saying this is why Latinx and Asian Americans can’t really get behind this guy with enthusiasm. I remember my deportation proceedings like it was yesterday. First they tried to separate me from my parents, and then from my wife over the course of four years.
I am a Dreamer and I don't trust you
@JoeBiden
. At all. Your administration (the Obama administration) raided my home and deported many people I love. That's why our Latinx community is not supporting you so far.
No thank you.
#ByeByeBiden
I really get tired of the "is this legal" question. We live in a country that relies on a ton of legal fiction to maintain law and order (and w*ite supremacy) so does it matter if something is legal or not if it is not right?
I'm so anti tone policing. It's primarily directed at people of color.
No one is helping to
#FreeLuis
more than the undocumented youth at Berkeley. No one is as effective, as intelligent and as capable as them. They will bring Luis home. Stop tone-policing them.
I got a VAWA approval today and cried a bit. It’s taken her 22 years to escape a horrifically abusive situation and if it was to people like Susan Rice, my client would have been deported.
Pres. Obama's revisionist history from above for the
#DREAMAct
is a lesson and reminder to not trust Democrats w/ anything. Not even going to get started on Cecilia and Claire.
UC Berkeley doesn't make it easy for students to access me. I borrow office space on campus once a week to meet them. That needs to change so that the same thing that happened to Luis doesn't happen to other students on campus
#FreeLuis
There’s no need for an executive order on this issue because there is no law that requires the separation of parents from children. In fact, it is very much against the law to do such a thing, which is why this EO very likely a ploy.
My first
#ImmigrantHeritageMonth
as a U.S. citizen. Got keys to my brand new office today, and working on grand opening party soon. Super stoked and excited. Happy weekend everyone!
I got a Berkeley student out of detention. I won asylum for a UC Berkeley parent and student. I’ve never received a single word of thanks from
@UCBerkeley
’s administration. Instead, they are retaliating. It’s almost like they are working with ICE to make their students disposable
The planet is dying, we don’t have good healthcare, Nazis want to kill us and/or deport us, and if your biggest worry is someone’s tone online, I don’t know what to tell you but just do what I do - auto-mute people you don’t follow. 💀
If you support
#metoo
you should be paying close attention to how the Trump Administration is trying to make primarily immigrant women vulnerable to abuse, deportation, and treating them as second-class by terminating

Damn, this year started with an intense deportation defense case for someone who is now on his path to citizenship. I got my US citizenship. I started my own law firm. I got my driver's license. And I'm starting to live my 20-gay-teen years in my mid-30s. Life's great.
