We felt there was a shortage of Indian perspectives on semiconductor geopolitics, even though India is a crucial node of this supply chain. So we wrote a book.

Woohoo! We have a

It's about Indian public policy stories and frameworks — infused with some Bollywood references and garnished with humour.
Will you read it? Only answer allowed is a yaaasss :).
As a Mandarin language student, I recoil in horror when Chinese names are articulated incorrectly. I think we should know our strategic adversaries well enough to pronounce their leaders' names precisely.

Quite amusing that the north-south debate over public finances has been taking place with complete disregard to Public Finance theory itself. Guess it shouldn't be surprising but let me attempt anyways..

I'm amazed how quickly cloth masks have improved. From the ugly synthetic cloth ones that bruised the ears to ones with multiple layers, adjustable straps behind the head, better fits to avoid fogging glasses etc. No centrally planned design; market incentives at work.
So here's a hilarious story that illustrates how virtually anything goes in the name of religion.

Got my co-author copy today. It's just about 200 pages - an easy read for anyone trying to make sense of semiconductor geopolitics.
We have chapters on India, and a framework for future scenarios as well.
Completed nine years at Takshashila in March! It's been a fun ride. A decade ago, I hadn't even heard the phrase 'public policy', but education and research at Takshashila have nurtured me. The supersmart people in the Takshashila network I met broadened & sharpened my thinking.
Regarding the news "PM Modi calls upon private firms to enter medical education sector in big way".
Good to understand why this hasn't happened until now.

I then went to the police officer and explained the situation. He told me this is a common fraud and that I should register a complaint. Since I couldn't identify the number plates, I didn't go to the police station.

On July 4 (Tuesday) at around 5.30 pm, the same thing happened to me, this time on Wheeler Road near Thom's Bakery. And guess what. It was the SAME guy again. What are the odds!
Hypothesis: The US' most impactful 'soft' power instrument is the number of non-fiction books on the world its scholars write. The new terms, frameworks, and labels in these books 'shape the preferences of others’ more than other instruments.
In some urban Indian homes like ours, stainless steel vessels are the only daily-use artefacts that remind us of past family connections.
The engraved names, dates, & lost connections. Eg, the plate on the right is almost my age. So is that tumbler.
On Sunday (July 2), we were waiting for the traffic signal to turn green on the Queens Road signal, turning towards Alliance Francaise. After turning, one guy on an Activa stopped us aggressively and started accusing us that our car had gone over his leg.
Thankfully, the government clarifies in the Rajya Sabha that there is no plan for a population control bill. It's a problem that's already been addressed.
Hope it puts to rest the bogie of population explosion.
Price caps on 50 per cent of private college medical seats is a terrible policy. It will lead to fewer and smaller private colleges. The fee of the remaining 50 per cent will rise further. Instead of increasing the total number of seats, we will end up creating more scarcity.

He swerved ahead of my car. And he let another accomplice of his, on another two-wheeler, try the same trick. The guy started banging the car windows and made the same accusation.
Now I was sure that this was a fraud. Luckily, there were quite a few traffic policemen nearby.
I stopped the car near a place where the traffic police were catching traffic rule violations. The two two-wheelers ran away as soon as they saw the car stop.

I'm a cautious, slow driver, so I was surprised. Especially when we turned slowly after the vehicles ahead of us had moved. In any case, I apologised profusely, thinking that I might have made an inadvertent mistake.

China giving gyaan on human rights and Pakistan giving a talk about nuclear security are the funniest highlights of the last week. All that's left is for Trump to talk about the merits of migration.
The World must also seriously consider the safety & security of India's nuclear arsenal in the control of the fascist, racist Hindu Supremacist Modi Govt. This is an issue that impacts not just the region but the world.
Just a reminder for all "ban China goods" people:
India as an importer accounted for just about 3% of all China's exports in 2018 (source: WITS).

Three examples show how competitive federalism without guardrails can go wrong.
- Rajasthan and then Punjab governments thinking of going back on pension reforms.
- Maharashtra - Gujarat tussle over the display & semi fab plant
- copycat freebie schemes.
Things our governments blame on rodents:
1. Eating government files
2. Drinking alcohol under government custody
3. Causing electrocution, leading to the deaths of two citizens.
Amazing how governments manage to escape accountability.
Thinking aloud: I am unclear about the chip fab/assembly investment figures. MeitY should offer more clarity. Check this:
1. Dholera Fab total investment: ~$11bn
2. Micron assembly plant capex: $2.75bn
3. Morigaon assembly investment: ~3.2bn
The policy-relevant insight is that our states are way too big for preference discovery and good governance. We probably need 2x the number of states. UP is twice as populous as China's most-populous province, Guangdong.

If the government were serious about helping medical students in the long run, it would get an expert committee to urgently purpose measures for removing constraints that deter medical colleges from starting up and grow in size.
And our cities are not overpopulated, they are under governed. Let's think about fixing our governance rather than blame fellow citizens for simply trying to improve their own lives.
Some economies worry about middle-income traps. But India might be hitting that wall even before becoming middle-income. A lower-middle-income trap perhaps. Thanks to missing reforms, protectionist policies, ans govt interference.
