Introducing Playdate, a new handheld gaming system from Panic.
It fits in your pocket. It's got a black and white screen. It includes a season of brand-new games from amazing creators. Oh and… there's a crank????
Yes. A thread…
About those games. We reached out to some of our favorite people, like
@KeitaTakahash
,
@bfod
,
@helvetica
,
@shauninman
, and many more.
Here's a peek at one: Crankin's Time Travel Adventure, from Keita. It's fun and funny.
But here's the trick: every game is a secret. They're all included with system, and they will be delivered to you each week, for a few months.
Our dream is simple: that you wake up on new game day excited to see what you can play next.
So, we also started publishing video games. It's been fun and rewarding. First, Firewatch from
@camposanto
, and later this year, the joyful Untitled Goose Game from
@house_house_
.
Playdate in 24 Hours:
• 70,000+ people on the wait list
• Thousands of interested devs
• Some skeptics (we understand)
• 23k Twitter followers (hi!)
• Most importantly… an overwhelming flood of positivity + excitement from people who also want this weird thing we want (!!!)
Playdate Pulp is now available in public beta!! Pulp is a super fun (and free!) game making tool for Playdate. With a few clicks, anyone can turn a game idea into Playdate reality.
If this seems cool, visit and sign-up for the waiting/mailing list ASAP.
(The earlier you're on the list, the earlier we will e-mail you when it's ready.)
Thank you for reading. We're so excited share this with you. We made Playdate just for fun. 💛
Our company
@panic
has been around for a long-ass time, and we've made lots of great software. But one day we realized: we're self-funded, and there's nobody to tell us what to do. Why aren't we trying more new things?
We've worked on this for four years. We've learned so much — well, there was so much we didn't know. It wasn't all smooth sailing, but little by little we created this thing. And today, we're announcing it to the world, and shipping it in early 2020.
@RobiverseU
I…… it…… there will be no AAA games unless we can convince Ubisoft to make a totally black-and-white Assassins Creed game that uses a crank. I mean I suppose it's worth a try, what do you think
@Ubisoft
Here’s a fun little new thing we made. Plug in your Playdate, launch this app, and it will mirror your Playdate screen to your PC/Mac/Linux in real-time. Perfect for streamers, YouTubers, and better accessibility. Input from the PC can pass through to the Playdate also!
When sleeping, Playdate will display a handy clock.
For how long? These units have been showing the clock for over two weeks. And are still going. Off a single charge!
Oh yeah, the crank! No, it doesn't power the device. It's a flip-out rotational controller that puts a fresh spin on fun. Some games use it exclusively, some use it with the d-pad, and some not at all.
But we didn't know beans about mechanical engineering or industrial design. So we cold e-mailed Teenage Engineering (
@jugendingenieur
), a company that makes things we really love. Their spirit was infectious. They were on board. They came up with the crank.
I was lucky enough to get access to the
@playdate
developer preview, so of course I had to make a Flipnote player for the thing!
The note shown here is one of
@kekeflipnote
's old works - you can use the crank to scrub through frame by frame!
Hi. Are you ready for a ✨
#PlaydateUpdate
✨?
We have a lot to catch up on. Our first-ever video update has details on Season One, future games, some surprises and info on future pre-orders. Please join us!
🗓 Premieres Tuesday, June 8th at 9:00 AM PDT
➡️
"We should build a thing!" became "let's make a game system!" became "oh and it should include a bunch of cool games!" became "we should make the games surprises!" and… well, it just grew. It wasn't long until we had a janky-but-functional prototype.
Hi! As you know, last month we released Pulp, our easy-to-use Playdate game making tool.
And today, as promised… it's time for even more developer news.
🌟 The full Playdate Software Development Kit is now available for free to all at !! 🌟
A thread!
🎺 We did it. We shipped over 70,000 Playdate pre-orders. We're all caught up. And that means…
Playdates are NOW IN STOCK and READY TO SHIP. Place an order right now, and your Playdate will go out the door in just a few days.
Head on over to ➡️
But there was another thing we'd never done. A thing that we figured would be harder than any thing we've ever done. But something that would stretch our skills and help us grow.
Hardware.
Hi! If you've pre-ordered a Playdate, check your email for a copy of the "Playdate Owner's Update
#1
".
There's bad news (a battery tragedy means Late 2021 units are now Early 2022, see email for your timing) but also good news (Pulp+SDK release dates!!)
Thanks for reading it.
If you've drawn some Playdate-spec art (400 × 240, 1-bit black and white only) and are curious what it looks like on device, reply to this thread with your .png and we'll do our best to grab a photo for you!
Friends, it's time for a Playdate Update.
SUMMARY: a rough year, a small delay, but lots of good! Orders should now be starting in early 2021, our "season one" of games now has even more games than we planned, and mass production is starting.

I know this is just a static image, but boy oh boy it's hard to express how much we wanted to immediately plug in a mouse and somehow use this for real

As we hurtle towards the end of Early 2022, a quick Playdate update:
Group One's batch of brand new shiny Playdates are on their way to our fulfillment center in California as we speak!!
They'll still need to be processed (and gradually shipped) but… it's almost time!
Pretty incredible: Tom Salvo is porting the cult game Wipeout (the one with the best soundtrack) to Playdate. It's mostly a tech demo due to legal fuzziness 😌 …but doesn't it look sweet?
🆒
The Playdate doesn’t have 5G. It doesn’t have a 120 Hz screen, a custom-built chip, or any kind of camera. What the Playdate does have is a crank, an ultra-portable design, and a lot of charm. Check out our teardown:
Twelve hours remain. And in twelve hours — for the first time in over 16 months — many of us will gather together again safely in the cozy Panic office, ready to do our best.
Our sign is now officially Playdate Yellow in preparation.
See you in (our) morning!!
Here's some nice news: while it's still quite early, thanks to some heroic work by Brook, our Playdate Simulator (part of the Playdate SDK) is now up and running on Windows and Linux!!
YES PLEASE??? (Sorry for yelling)
On a side note, we may never get fully used to new Playdate games suddenly appearing that we had no idea existed. It is a very weird — but very good! — feeling.
(If they deleted it later you never saw this tweet)
For the past few weeks we’ve been heavily testing our final season delivery code, shaking out bugs and enjoying some games.
The good news is, our whole thing turned out to be pretty good (phew) — it is always exciting to see the purple “New Game!!” light
Hello.
We’ve been working non-stop to finish up Playdate, but in the meantime, we wanted to give you a small update on our Playdate Developer Preview.
It’s lots of fun news. A
#playdatedev
thread:
Some good news: we just got our IOSS ("Import One-Stop Shop") number, which allows us to properly sell Playdate to EU countries while collecting VAT up-front. For a stressful bit it was looking like it wasn't going to make it in time. One more item off our pre-orders checklist.
Oh! A new Playdate Update video is here!
It recaps the great developer things we've released this year, like Pulp and the Playdate SDK. Please enjoy it.
There's one extra important bit in the update. Playdates in Group One will begin shipping…
…today.
24 hours later, and that was… amazing. We are so super happy to see so many people excited about Playdate!!
And more than anything, we're so happy that our amazing game devs — and game devs yet to come — will have a sizable audience for their amazing work. They deserve it.
Please enjoy this wonderful LEGO® Playdate® built by Owen V.—13 years old—who says it took him about four days to create this cheery friend. We're really glad you shared this with us, Owen!
We're really enjoying answering your technical questions about Playdate. Here's a little video Dave made to demonstrate the performance of 64 75×75 sprites.
It's hard to express the scale of our thanks — we are energized beyond belief. But we can't celebrate too early. Now we have to deliver a great thing.
So… back to work! 💛
In other news, Playdate's factory, like all factories in Sungai Petani, Malaysia, stopped production from July 4th ~ July 21st for COVID precautions. It's the right move: things are made by people, and people are more important than things. Hoping for the best for everyone there.
Hello! Here's a fun little thing. This is Playmaker from
@dmierau
, who's part of the Developer Preview. It's been really fun watching this app come together, and it makes us remember that Playdate can be more than just games.
To make sure that Pulp, our browser-based Playdate game making tool, is in solid shape when we release it to the public in January, we're doing an internal Pulp Game Jam.
The Game Jam's theme was just picked… inside a Pulp game Neven made! Get ready for some scary heartbreak.
Developers! Late last week we put up a sign-up form — that's also an important survey — for people interested in the Playdate SDK. Signing up will make sure that we send you all future Playdate SDK news. That's it. Everyone welcome.
Our internal Pulp Game Jam has ended, giving us six great games that push the limits of what we thought Pulp was capable of. Let's take a look.
Remember, Pulp is our browser-based game making tool, coming in January, an easy, approachable, fun way for anyone make Playdate games.
Finally, we can hear you yelling from here.
“Yes, but WHEN is Playdate coming out!?!”
Expect a BIG UPDATE in the next few months with our timeline, pre-order details, a surprise, and title reveals of all the free games you’ll get in Playdate Season One!!
Hope you’re well! 💛
(Yes, Group Two, you're next. We'll have more news for you in the future about estimates and details.)
But for now, let's take a small moment, together, to celebrate a huge, unbelievable moment in our long, fun adventure…
Playdate is now shipping. 🟨🎉
PPS: three things we're authorized to leak now
① Playdate's final price is $179.
② We've doubled the internal storage to 4GB.
③ And! We've DOUBLED the number of Season One games. No joke. 24 games come free with your Playdate.
More in the update!
There's more details and other bits of news too — just hit the link in the first tweet to read it all.
Thanks for being a part of Playdate. We're so excited for what 2020 is going to bring!!
PS: We're also working on this case. What do you think?
Hi! We hope you're doing ok. As a fun test, Steve will be doing a Twitch stream on Friday, demonstrating the basics of Playdate programming! It should be an hour or so. If you're curious, mark your calendar: 5/1 11:00 AM PDT.
As we grow ever closer to Group One systems gradually shipping, a lot of press folks got to unpack their Playdates today. Here's a few.
First, we absolutely applaud the spirit of Janet's device comparison video:
Hi. Get ready for a new ✨
#PlaydateUpdate
✨!
Join us for a video showcase with news about Catalog, our curated on-device/web store, PLUS details about some new games!
📅 Premieres Tuesday, March 7th at 9:00 AM PT
➡️
It's Catalog's first game drop!!
Catalog is our on-device store for great curated Playdate things, which you get after installing the latest Playdate OS. It includes some brand new games, and TWO ARE FREE!?
🧵 A thread of what's new in Catalog today:
1️⃣ Just one more day (!!) until Playdate pre-orders begin. 10:00 AM PDT on Thursday July 29th.
While you wait, some reading:
• The Verge:
• GameSpot:
• IGN:
• Ars Technica:
Untitled Goose Game will be at PAX West next week, sharing a booth with
@playdate
. We expect this to be a peaceful coexistence with no bite marks, feathers caught in cranks, etc.
Two important pieces of Playdate news for you today:
• Playdate OS 2.0 is now out, and you can get in Settings. It adds a brand new List View for the Home screen, which you can select in the Menu!
• …oh, and, Group 4 has started shipping. 🥳🎊🎉
First, hello! We're deep in the hard work zone, but some great new Playdate things aren't far away. Look for another "Owner's Update" email soon!
Second, we were very delighted to see Playdate mentioned in the Wall Street Journal, if not just for this official Playdate portrait.
When Playdate shipped, Panic co-founder Steven wrote a little about what it meant to him. And in the spirit of doing things differently, posted it to a Gopher (!) site.
If you're up for it, find it here: gopher://stevenf.com:70/0/journal/2022/04/18/first-playdates-shipping.txt
Next week, we'll be emailing everyone in Group One to make sure your mailing addresses are valid — please keep an eye out for that.
We appreciate you, and we appreciate your excitement for Playdate!
😮💨 Systems are normal, orders are flowing, and the Playdate site has returned. We'll continue to figure out the best plan for international orders that got delayed due to failures — stay tuned.
Also: we're absolutely amazed at the response today. Thank you all so very much. 💛
6/24 • Playdate Update • Month One
Here's a little peek at some of what we did in the last four weeks since announcing Playdate.
(Photos by Koutarou Washizaki / Wired Japan: )
Photos of Playdates arriving in the mail are both melting our minds (how do you have these! oh right it's for sale) and are giving us life. Thank you.
(If you're waiting in Group 1, our volume has been increased — still on track to have them all in the mail before end of May.)
Also, some good news: although our factory in Malaysia had to extend their complete Covid shutdown until the end of JULY (<— corrected), we're just now seeing signs of life on our assembly line — and all the workers there are getting their first vaccine shot this week.
It's hard to believe, but Playdate has been shipping for one year now! As we get ready for Group Four, here's a quick look back at some First Year facts and figures, taken from our sales data and surveys.
It's been an incredible time — and, yes, we're just getting started. HBDPD
(Oh, and I bet you're wondering, what's next after our SDK release? Just one big milestone remains: shipping the very first Playdates to customers. We're in the home stretch, things are looking promising, and it shouldn't be much longer. Please look forward to our next update!)
Hi! As you know, last month we released Pulp, our easy-to-use Playdate game making tool.
And today, as promised… it's time for even more developer news.
🌟 The full Playdate Software Development Kit is now available for free to all at !! 🌟
A thread!
What am I going to unwrap today?
(Don’t worry, it’s just debugging, we’re not planning out a Season 2555 just yet)
Also! Stay tuned for a production update from us! We continue to work hard on all fronts and look forward to reporting back to all of you with Playdate pre-orders.
As you know, we have a full Playdate SDK for Lua and C code. But we also have Pulp, a fun, no/low-code browser-based tool. Here's more about Pulp!
"If you can imagine the game of your dreams as a set of tiles that can be changed, you can make it in Pulp."
So! What's next?
1. Big cool conference call with the factory next week
2. Getting our full Playdate SDK (and our Pulp no-code tool) ready for launch
3. Testing Season One's wifi-based delivery, a lot
4. Getting ready for Late 2021 and beyond
We're lucky to have you with us 💛
A little over a year ago, we launched Catalog for Playdate, with 16 titles and our futuristic "Crank to Buy" technology. If you're curious, here's how our curated, on-device store is doing!
And remember, games just keep getting added — see what's new:
Hello friends. Here are three neat new things from the Playdate Developer Preview community.

last chance address confirmation emails are going out… now!
Scam alert: if you see a Facebook ad like this, please beware! You can’t buy Playdate yet, and you can’t buy it for $55*. This ad will make your money wave goodbye to you forever. What a world
* that’s much cheaper it costs to make them 😌
And then… then, my friends… there’s “A Joke That’s Worth $0.99”.
There’s nothing we can add to this very important video. Which you absolutely must watch now with sound on.

(And thanks for your patience. We "only speak when there's news" because otherwise it'd be a wild roller coaster for you — our logistics company got hacked and shipments froze! Our battery factory closed for weeks because of Covid! Etc. — but we're working hard every single day.)
