🫣 I’m posting this while hiding behind my hands, but my 2025 #peakdistrict calendar is now out! Buying one early means you’ll save money (only £7.95 + P&P), you’re guaranteed to get one (last year I sold out quickly), and also you can feel smug all year.

Wending my way home after a long day, with the sun setting over the Peak District hills and the smell of woodsmoke and autumn in the air. The only sounds were the sheep and my own footsteps, heavy with a quiet tiredness, knowing I'd earned a fire, a good book and a lot of cheese.

On the last day of the year I wanted to share my own favourite shot from 2022. It was taken on a midsummer morning when the air was so fresh and clean you could almost touch it. My tiny little bit of the world, for that tiny little moment, felt perfect.

For Christmas Eve I hope you won’t mind me sharing one of my own favourite Winter shots. I took it a few years ago but I still haven't forgotten how wonderful it was to stand in those beautiful woods as the snow fell, covering every rock and bough, and all noises with it.

Sometimes you come across a Peak District farm that looks so perfect in the landscape it’s almost as if it’s grown there. This scene can’t have changed much for centuries, and the farm has the date 1593 above the door, so it’s seen a few centuries come and go.

The little hamlet of Milldale is one of the prettiest in the Peak District, with its stone cottages, narrow lanes and position on the banks of the River Dove. It's like taking a step back in time to walk here, and it looked especially beautiful on this quiet autumn evening.

After the daffodils, the dandelions. Close behind, bluebells, stitchwort, and then the wild garlic, galaxies of white stars in dark woods, before the lanes are lined with cow parsley lace. I feel so lucky to mark off the weeks by the passing blooms, telling the time with flowers.

This bridge over the River Wye at Haddon Hall is barely wide enough for a single person to cross, yet it's stood proudly here for more than 400 years, gathering moss and lichen and storing up the echoes of all those past footsteps.

Yesterday at sunrise I was standing on the banks of the Derbyshire River Wye as the mist drifted along the water, flowing towards the old stone bridge at Haddon Hall. For a few brief moments the river looked like molten gold, and I thought you might like to share in the beauty.

Scriveners Books in Buxton is always an atmospheric place, but in the winter twilight, with its windows glowing through the rain, it looked pretty perfect. This Victorian building stocks more than 40,000 books over five floors, with creaking steps and hidden nooks and crannies.

Sunrise in winter happens so much more gently than in summer. The light creeps into the sky with soft pastel colours, the growing warmth slowly burns off the mists in the valley, and the fields echo with nothing more than birdsong, sheep and your footsteps on the frosty grass.

Sometimes I really feel the limits of photography. I always try to get an image to convey a mood as much as a view, but I wish you could have also smelt the damp, rich earth on this lane, heard the gentle patter of the leaves drifting down, and felt the soft mist on your face.

This is my favourite tree in Padley Gorge. I call her The Dancer because she looks to me as if she's pirouetting alone in the wood, spiralling up towards the light. A few days ago I caught her in the misty half-light which made her stand out beautifully, a soloist on the stage.

Autumn can feel like a time of greys and browns once the initial blaze is over, but it has its own softer, quieter colour that rewards those who search it out. Even in the misty woods there is yellow clinging to branches, green moss lining every rock and bright orange underfoot.

I had to stop and rub my eyes at this view; it felt as if I’d fallen into a dream. The last golden light drifted down through the trees and this beautiful horse lifted his head to watch me pass. I wouldn't have been wholly shocked if he’d casually spread wings and flown off.

Walking home at the end of a long day, and this is just what I needed to see. A winding path, the sun sinking over the hills, lighting the treetops pink, knowing that the kettle's on and the fire is lit. Some might think it unbearably quiet but I wouldn't swap it for the world.

As the world gets crazier by the day, I retreat more and more to the quiet company of trees. I hope there will always be country paths to walk along, and I hope they will always bring peace to everyone who seeks their solace. If you need me, I’ll be curled up in the branches.

We're now in that wonderful moment on the cusp of Spring, when everywhere you look is promise and hope. Leaves are unfurling like tiny flags from every tree, the tightest buds are easing into colour, and the hedges are sprinkled with blossom. I never want it to end.

This Peak District lane is stunning in Autumn, with such bright colours that it sends your eyes a bit crazy to take them all in. On days like this Autumn feels like Nature’s grand finale, that last huge firework, before we all troop home and snuggle down for the night of Winter.

Sometimes, just sometimes, everything falls into place. The sun sets in a bright blaze over the valley and lights up every autumnal tree, and a sheep wanders into the frame and obligingly stands in a perfect spot. I feel so very lucky to see such views. Maybe the sheep does too.

Oh little town of Bakewell, how beautiful it looked yesterday covered by a light dusting of icing sugar snow. The banks of the River Wye crunched under my footsteps, and the jumble of rooftops above glowed with their white frosting. @vpdd #peakdistrict

I'm a sucker for a misty autumn lane and that slightly eerie sense of not quite knowing what lies ahead. I hope, with the tiniest bit of imagination, you can smell this scene as much as see it, feel the damp air around you, and hear the quiet flutter of leaves falling.

This time of year can feel relentlessly grey and brown, so I was very happy to find this tunnel of Summer in deepest March. The colour came from holly, ivy and moss shining in the pale light - I stood and drank it all in until the sun dodged away again and the spell was broken.

There's such a soft, quiet beauty about winter light and the muted colours of a misty morning. Gone are the bright, bird-loud summer dawns; it feels instead as if Nature is just easing gently into the day, stretching, yawning, turning up the brightness and volume oh so slowly.

I love this little view of Bakewell, with its jumble of rooflines rising from the River Wye. It looks particularly beautiful when you catch it sleeping in the autumn morning mists, the first rays of sun just striking the clock on the elegant spire of All Saints Church.

The most beautiful morning in Padley Gorge, the woodlands covered in soft mists, making every leaf glow with a green that seemed Spring-like again. This young lad was enjoying it as much as I was, pausing to drink the cool water in Burbage Brook and pose perfectly for a portrait.

Yesterday morning at Beresford Dale, with the River Dove sparkling in the early morning sunshine. No added music, just the water and birdsong; no fancy editing, just the golden trees and the morning mist rising off the water. Relax and enjoy 30 seconds of Peak District peace…

This was a view of such quiet, perfect beauty - the first rays of sunlight breaking through the frosty air, lighting the mist rising from the river and streaming beneath the arches of that ancient bridge - that I almost forgot to take the shot because I was too busy watching.

Once a medieval hunting forest for the nobility, now a peaceful haven for wildlife, this is Wyming Brook, where a stream trickles over moss-covered rocks, overhung with the dipping branches of ancient trees. It never fails to offer quiet spots to escape the pull and push of life.

One of the (many) things I love about the #peakdistrict is the sense that the past is never very far away, always hiding around a corner or down a quiet lane. The memories of a simpler, quieter, calmer life seem to linger and occasionally peep through in little time-slips.

I do love a country gate, and here’s a beauty in the dappled morning spotlight. I always feel very privileged to see the first light of the day as the Spring sunshine softly reaches the sleeping #peakdistrict valleys, calls the birds to song and wakes the sheep.

Walking from the sleepy hamlet of Alport you pass meadows that are FULL of buttercups; it's like stepping into an impossibly beautiful Disney movie. I love this gate that looks as if its function is to hold back the flood of flowers, with just a few spilling through the gaps.

I have lots of favourite gates (doesn't everyone?!) but this one looked especially perfect when the fields beyond were covered in layers of morning mist. It looked like a gateway to another world, where the trees had become islands in a shallow sea of ever-shifting white.

There's a rare kind of beauty in the setting Spring sun that meets me as I walk home. Along the lane filled with gold, heralded by blackbirds and daffodils, past the gate that long ago gave up the ghost, and into the weary quiet of the hills. I will always be thankful for it all.

This is the village of Alstonefield, looking perfect in the morning light. It has a village green, a country pub, more pretty cottages than you can shake a stick at and, perhaps best of all, this bench under the spreading sycamore. Who wouldn't want to rest here for a while?!
