~68% of Base chain state has been taken over by a single protocol of questionable utility thanks to cheap fees + storage mispricing, a tiny number of users have monopolized the majority of network resources this has implications for every cheap fee blockchain. some thoughts 👇

you can query each address's nonce per block. so you can use this with something like a binary search to efficiently gather an complete transaction history of an address ctc uses this technique. for example for vitalik.eth takes about 20 secs to find 811 tx's with alchemy node

why is pricing storage difficult? most of the operations within a transaction are easy to price because they happen instantaneously but storage is different…once you pay for storage, that data gets stored by the network *forever*. so it's like pricing a lifetime subscription

> In a time ancient and revered, the Optimizooors, alchemists of enhancement, and the Indexooors, architects of order, danced a peaceful waltz. But lo! The Optimizooors, succumbing to the siren's song of greed, dared desecrate the sacred realms of the Indexooors. In response, the…

@wilburforce_ We don't use logs for those events, but have a subgraph that makes it really easy to pull swap/liquidity history. DMs always open for anyone trying to integrate with us.

Announcing uv: an extremely fast Python package installer and resolver, written in Rust. uv is designed as a drop-in alternative to pip, pip-tools, and virtualenv. With a warm cache, uv installs are near-instant. Here, it's > 75x faster than pip and pip-tools.

how bad is this? in absolute terms the problem is still small. Base contract storage is only ~50 GiB in size (compared to ~245 GiB on Ethereum) the problem has also become less severe over time. XEN state share peaked at around 85% back in october

just learned about how insanely extensible reth is with just a single tiny file, can add: - a custom cli subcommand - a custom tracer - a custom rpc namespace coming soon: custom indexing stages I thought adding an rpc python tracer would be hard but it actually looks easy

should we add a python tracer to Reth that works just like the JS tracer from Geth? would mean shipping a smol python interpreter as part of the node but that might be fine, can make optional have people wanted to write custom tracers historically but couldn't? h/t @fubuloubu

Looking for Reth Full Node / Pruning testers. Disk down to ~1TB-ish with this update, no snapshots/optimizations yet. Sync speed should be improved, but marginally. Configurable by height/distance + filtering logs only to certain contracts, later prune storage by contract too.

gameplan: the gas limit touches all aspects of Ethereum scaling. this is too much to tackle all at once so we break the topic into multiple parts: - part 1 = state growth - part 2 = history growth - part 3 = state accesss - part 4 = gas limit today is part 1

having a goerli reth node on my laptop has been amazing for dev work on the go in a car, or on a plane, or in a place with bad internet, I can continue work on data tooling without interruption why reth? 1) it’s compact so fits on laptop drive 2) it’s quick to sync, so you can…

after you get over the initial hump of the rust borrow checker, you then get immediately punched in the face by restrictions on trait objects, associated types, and Sizedness

Ive noticed extreme hesitancy from many people about running nodes. you should know that it's much easier than it used to be. I strongly recommend trying reth out and building that skillset if youre doing dev work, there WILL come a point where running a node is useful to you

in today's article we quantify the total amount of state held by each Ethereum contract and categorize the contracts hierarchically visualizing this hierarchy shows how much of Ethereum’s state is used by different categories like tokens, infrastructure, games, and defi

this is a major milestone but we're just getting started I've been running archive nodes for a long time. the reth team is turning all the pain points I complain about into incredible next-gen UX for node operators very exciting times and I feel lucky to be a part of it

is the problem fixed? so far there have been no mitigations enacted to prevent future abuse there’s nothing preventing one or ten new XEN-like protocols from emerging to fill the state with spam. especially as fees continue to fall
