Me: "I work at POLITICO, I'm the cannabis reporter."
@BernieSanders

Me: "I'm the cannabis reporter."
Sanders: "Are you stoned right now?"
Me: "I am not stoned right now."
My parents in recent yrs have taken to getting a national forest pass to cut down their own tree because tree farm prices have skyrocketed.
This year she tells me “our tree is a little bit different, we weren’t sure at first but it’s growing on us.”
The tree:
In cannabis banking hearing,
@AOC
asks: "are we compounding the racial wealth gap right now?"
She also asks the panel if "the folks who profited off for-profit incarceration could be the first to profit off legalization?"
Corey Barnette's answer: "yes."

This photo with my dad starting up at it is giving Charlie Brown Xmas vibes
But I’m starting to think my mom might not be crazy about it being “elegant”
She says it’s elegant and likes that it’s very tall (they’ve had one this tall before since you get to pick whatever size you want in the national forest for $7)
The update with some decoration:
Love is Blind can’t find people in DC because everyone a)won’t take the time off from their career to find love, b)is afraid they might jeopardize their security clearance by going on the show and/or c) doesn’t want it to pop up when they run for office someday.
Recap: Montana, South Dakota, Arizona and New Jersey legalized adult-use marijuana tonight.

I sent my mom some of the responses here and she really loved them 🫶🏻 her response (below) is classic teacher Nancy.
(JFYI She calls things with lovely festive vibes -like a house festooned with lights or a perfect holiday shop window- a “Christmas sighting”)
Three takeaways:
1: Lawmakers are still releasing marijuana-related news at 4:20pm.
2: Sanders' plan is the first I've seen to create USDA-funded farming grants for marijuana, which is pretty interesting.
3: His plan bans the tobacco industry from participating in marijuana.
Too many lives were ruined due to the disastrous criminalization of marijuana. Today I am releasing my plan to:
✅ Legalize marijuana with executive action
✅ Expunge past marijuana convictions
✅ Invest in communities most affected by the War on Drugs
ICYMI: Charlotte Figi is the little girl whose struggle with epilepsy led to "Charlotte's Web" laws in states around the nation. Those laws make it possible for children with potentially-deadly childhood seizures to access cannabis medication that stops those seizures.
A note to all editors and journalists out there reviewing summer intern applications:
I had a 3.1 GPA, went to state school, and had few extracurriculars on my resume b/c my 30+ hr/week job took all my time. Please don't use those criteria to narrow down your applicants.
Stumbled upon this headstone today when I was on a run and it is a journey. I honestly think it may be the most DC gravestone possible. Well done, Evelyn.
🚨 Congress just passed its first marijuana bill.
@SenSchumer
took the podium tonight to usher through the Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act, which passed by unanimous consent.
The bill passed the House in July, and now heads to Biden's desk.
First they say "you aren't capable of doing what male athletes do"
Then Simone Biles does a vault traditionally done by men and they say "that's too dangerous."
This disincentivizes female athletes from taking their game to the next level.
At a town hall,
@politico
just announced 150 new jobs in the next year - many of those in editorial.
I know there’s been a lot of layoffs recently — please tell your reporter friends who’ve been laid off to keep an eye on politico’s jobs page!
Reps
@RepDaveJoyce
and
@AOC
just dropped a new
#cannabis
bill that will help states and local governments pay for expungements of non-violent cannabis-related records.
The HOPE Act authorizes the DOJ to award grants to any jurisdiction that needs $$ to process expungements.
Three hours in Iceland and I find this at the flea market in Reykjavik.
Asked the guy if he knew what it was, he said yes. When I told him it was seen as racist by many Americans, he said I wasn’t in America and walked away from me.
I met Paige Figi at a conference last fall, and she is the epitome of a mom who would fight the world to save her child. She found a medication that gave her daughter a chance, and got laws changed to make it accessible. My heart is in so much pain for her right now.
New:
@SenWarren
has sent a letter to
@POTUS
urging him to use his presidential pardon power to pardon federal nonviolent cannabis convictions.
@SenJeffMerkley
and
@SenMarkey
signed the letter with her.
“Paying your dues” in journalism is working Saturdays or Christmas, having a beat you didn’t necessarily want, starting as a digital producer or in a small market… not being unable to afford rent and groceries or being wildly overworked to the point of burnout. IMHO.
I called her, explained everything, read her some comments and told her how many people have liked her tree … and you all made her day - or maybe her week. 🫶🏻
She said it made her feel like the festivities started early. 🎄

, is being formally introduced today.
Story on .
Here's the summary:
NEW from me: Montana Democrats are launching a 7-figure push to register and turn out Native voters, an important Dem-leaning voting bloc in a wildly important senate race.
In today's
#MorningCannabis
newsletter: Rep
@AOC
told me the fears that marijuana could negatively impact the election for Democrats are a bad calculation.
"I think this is a win, win, win policy and I think that we should be doing this before the election,” she said.

If you haven't known the feeling of not knowing how you're going to pay for groceries or rent at some point in your life, you shouldn't be allowed to be in charge of other peoples' livelihoods.
Had a convo with a young aspiring reporter today who noted that the interns for national outlets this summer are predominantly Ivy League and top 10 j-school students. The reporter wondered where or if they would fit in national news.
As an industry, we can do better.
I kind of feel like “social norms are changing” is code for “women can talk about things now that always bothered them but they couldn’t say so before”
Social norms are changing. I understand that, and I’ve heard what these women are saying. Politics to me has always been about making connections, but I will be more mindful about respecting personal space in the future. That’s my responsibility and I will meet it.
Just imagining two contestants fall in love and then realize that they’re going to have to inform their bosses of their relationship for ethics reasons.
And here we have the finished product!
Nancy took this photo at 6:50 this morning (west coast time) and sent it to me, adding she’ll be working on the room now and she loves the finished look of the tree.

11 states legalized

between 2012 and 2020.
7 states have legalized cannabis in the last 5 months.
If you were looking for the "tipping point..." I think a good argument could be made that 2020 was it.
@abbyvesoulis
This is insane.
Saying that her job was "a lucky catch" was the first 🚩 but uhh telling her coworker that his wife is forgetful is absolutely wild. She should be fuming.
I’m sorry

But careers will be forged in the dorms. Lifelong relationships will be made. 15 yrs from now you’ll wonder how the Majority Leader’s chief of staff came to be such good friends with the WSJ bureau chief and the Deputy Secretary of Education and the answer will be Love is Blind.

BREAKING: The
@AP
is calling that a measure to legalize marijuana in Arizona has passed.
With NJ already passing their measure to legalize tonight, that's over 16 million people whose weed laws are about to drastically change.
Still waiting on SD, Miss and Montana.

Washington’s newest congresswoman

receives the “chick pic” — a painting that’s been passed down from freshman to freshman. She calls it a “gimlet-eyed monstrosity.”
🚨Significant weed news:
Congress appears ready to send the first-ever cannabis bill to POTUS' desk. The House and Senate have collab'd on a weed research bill that lawmakers expect votes on next week.
It's a combo of research bills that have already passed both chambers.
Journalists: don’t do this.
Don’t cite others’ reporting from four months ago as something new, just to get clicks. Especially if you cite them but don’t link them. It’s a dick move, and the reporters you are jilting lose respect for you (if that’s something you care about).
All the giddy contestants who hand in one phone when they go into the villa but still have their second phone secretly on hand b/c producers didn’t anticipate everyone possessing two phones … and they all keep posting updates on Discord & LinkedIn
NEW: I talked with Senate Majprity Leader
@SenSchumer
this week about
#cannabis
policy. He told me he plans to move a federal reform bill, with or without President Biden.
He also wants to move
#SAFEbanking
and comprehensive reform at the same time.
Some *professional* news: I’m joining
@politico
as a federal cannabis reporter later this month. Excited to cover cannabis for POLITICO Pro and to be part of launching a new team! DM me with tips; new email coming soon.
New this morning: 24 senators signed a letter to leadership of both chambers, asking them to keep the
#SAFEBanking
Act (which makes it easier for banks to serve weed biz) in the COMPETES bill. The letter was signed by 5 Republicans and led by
@SenJeffMerkley
and
@SenJackyRosen
.
The fact that we have photos and video of whats going on inside means that journalists are continuing to do their jobs, even in the midst of what must be an incredibly scary situation for them.
Postscript: let's throw out the idea that making the Dean's List at an Ivy League school — while nice — makes someone more likely to be a good journalist.
We're not hiring neurosurgeons here, we're hiring relentless detectives who moonlight as obsessively accurate storytellers.

This is one of the best food cities in America. Some of the best Ethiopian food at Chercher, lifechanging Balkan food at Ambar, incredible Indian at Pappe, Laotian at Thip Khao, Greek at Martha Dear… the list is endless.
When it rains, it pours: Senate JUST PASSED the Feinstein-Grassley-Schatz cannabis research bill by Unanimous Consent.
It took all of 30 seconds on the Senate floor.
This is blowing up! ICYMI, DC is *way more* than just "official washington" and I hope LiB features it. I just had a laugh picturing an "official washington" LiB and got on a roll. 😂
FWIW: go north of U St! Shop local & make friends at local biz! Live in DC not just Washington!
I just asked
@RandPaul
about this legislation, and he said he is supporting it. He aslso said odds are improving for this or the SAFE banking act to pass the Senate as well as the house.

If two reporters get cast they’ll only be able to talk to each other because everyone else will constantly be asking if they’re off the record right now
And their first convo will just be “oh you work at Politico? Did you overlap with xx?” “Love her! isn’t she at the post now?”
@GuyFrees
Haha dude…. Nobody hung out in the business district at night *before* the pandemic… that’s where people go work during the day and then go elsewhere for dinner/nightlife.
More Dems talking about a unity candidate; the latest is SW Washington Rep
@MGPforCongress
, a moderate who flipped her district blue. Her office just send around this statement:
Yesterday
@AOC
told me that she'll be talking about her HOPE Act at today's Oversight subcommittee hearing on
#cannabis
. The hearing starts in any minute and will be streamed here:
Just in: the
#SAFEBanking
"plus" agreement negotiated by a bipartisan group of senators includes the HOPE Act and the GRAM Act, according to multiple sources.
Unclear if SAFE+ will be in the NDAA, but this is the package they're trying to get passed. 🔒
NEW: Advocates are asking Biden to use his powers of executive clemency for non-violent federal

crimes.
Here's the advocate letter
@NORML
just sent out:
We’re all getting used to legalization at this point but like… take a step back and think about it
HALF of the country is blatantly disobeying the federal government, which is refusing to do anything about it one way or another. It’s a bit 🤯🤯
Today's big appropriations weed news: Washington, D.C. may finally have its cannabis industry.
The "Harris rider," which for years has prohibited the District from taxing and regulating a legal adult use marijuana market, is nowhere to be found in this Senate's approps text.
#SAFEBanking
news:
@PattyMurray
told me that making sure the House's cannabis banking provision stays in the COMPETES Act is a majority priority for her.
This is important because she's the 3rd-ranking Senate Dem and has Schumer's ear.
NEW this am:
@SenSchumer
,
@SenBooker
and
@RonWyden
sent a letter to their Senate colleagues asking for "input, advice and guidance" as they finalize the language of their cannabis decriminalization bill.
