Mountains. Iโd come to visit its C14th Rood Loft once a feature of every Parish, but now few remain The flagstones around the loft's eight legs was dusted with bat droppings and dead black flies. โฌ๏ธ

Iโve got a new favourite Church door discovered at St Maryโs, Gedney, Lincolnshire. C14th. Itโs so magnificent there is even the remains of a small Ivory Cross in the centre panel beside the wicket Door.

Not churches this time, but Iโm writing about this C19th building in Trowbridge as part of the proposal for my next book. Itโs a house for drying teasels that were an important part of the old wool processing industry where they were used to raise the nap of the finished cloth.

The font at Bridekirk, Cumbria with its Anglo/Norse runes read something like "Rikarth he made me and brought me to this splendour". So not only do we know the name of the mason/carver but also what he looked like from his 'selfie' where he is busy with mallet & (huge) chisel.

The gaunt, Ivyed ruins of Tivetshall St Mary, Norfolk. Long neglected, its tower collapsed into the nave when an aircraft flew to close during the war. Touchingly, the graveyard is still maintained.

Apart from the C18th Box Pews that fill St Andrews at Winterborne Tomson, Dorset, little has changed since it was built in Norman times. Simple, bright and beautiful - with uneven limewashed walls and a flagged floor under a wagon roof. It is single celled instead of cruciform

I stop to take a snap of this farmstead at Stourhead every time I pass by. Thereโs never anyone about. The goats playground, the hole in the wall, its greenness, the trees and the single blue camping seat as well as itโs near perfect symmetry.

Alice Poleโs double-decker tomb at Ewelme, is best visited at the end of an autumn day, as the low sun movingly illuminates her likeness in death. Iโll save her modesty by not sharing her wizened nakedness. Contrast the thin band that holds her hair back with her Coronet. โฌ๏ธ

Am working next to these Medieval Acoustic jars' at St Maryโs,Tarrant Rushton, Dorset. They were placed above the chancel to enhance acoustics & improve resonance. Thereโs an equally ancient birds nest in there & some dusty old pennies no doubt thrown by local kids.

Thank you. While I adore font covers, what is kind of intriguing is how easily they slot into the other works found in parish churches (rood screens, piscinas, etc.). They function a little differently, but stylistically and iconographically, they belong to the same world.

My wandering thoughts keep carrying me back here - the C13th shrine of St Wite at Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset - 1 of only 2 medieval shrines to have survived with its occupant intact. I've never been anywhere in Britain that has such a sense of peace.

A pair of Knightly effigies at Dorchester Abbey, Oxfordshire- Sir William de Valance (d. 1282) colour can be seen in the mesmerising drapery of his cloak.
John de Stonor with the knobbly knee (d. 1354) served Edward III as Lord Chief Justice, his descendants still live nearby.

Remnants of C17th bell frame and bell headstock at St James, Avebury. It's always sad to see the carpenter's craft treated this way. So many timber bell frames have been needlessly destroyed over the years and replaced with steel frames.

Sir John Harsick has removed his armoured Gauntlet to hold his wife Katherineโs hand +1384 at St Georges, South Acre, Norfolk. There no love in this seemingly touching act as it simply indicates that he was married to an heiress.
