Just been to see the Holbein portraits of the #Tudor court at the @RCT - a real highlight of the year - how was it that he managed to boil down the essence of his sitters with just a few pencil lines. I wonder if he had equivalents in other European courts or was he unique?

The multicoloured wives of St Neots, Cornwall. C1490. Kneeling in prayer with their rosaries. They were the windowโ€™s donors.. They request in the banner over their coifed heads; Sancte Meberede (and Sancta Maria) ora pro nobis (SS Meubred & Mary, pray for us) #churchgoing

The restored but largely medieval Hanging Pyx at St Maryโ€™s, Dennington, Suffolk is a rare survivor of a furnishing that every church would have had prior to the Reformation. It contains the Holy Sacrament and is kept over the holiest place of all, the Altar. The sacramental bread

@natchjourneyman Thank you. While I adore font covers, what is kind of intriguing is how easily they slot into the other works found in parish churches (rood screens, piscinas, etc.). They function a little differently, but stylistically and iconographically, they belong to the same world.

My wandering thoughts keep carrying me back here - the C13th shrine of St Wite at Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset - 1 of only 2 medieval shrines to have survived with its occupant intact. I've never been anywhere in Britain that has such a sense of peace.

Such good fortune to have finally picked this up for a song. As Stewart Lee put it - 'How I envy you if you are about to read Ithell Colquhoun's gnostic travelogues for the first time, for soon you, too, will be post-Colquhoun, and everything will seem ever so slightly altered.'

A pair of Knightly effigies at Dorchester Abbey, Oxfordshire- Sir William de Valance (d. 1282) colour can be seen in the mesmerising drapery of his cloak. John de Stonor with the knobbly knee (d. 1354) served Edward III as Lord Chief Justice, his descendants still live nearby.

Remnants of C17th bell frame and bell headstock at St James, Avebury. It's always sad to see the carpenter's craft treated this way. So many timber bell frames have been needlessly destroyed over the years and replaced with steel frames.

Sir John Harsick has removed his armoured Gauntlet to hold his wife Katherineโ€™s hand +1384 at St Georges, South Acre, Norfolk. There no love in this seemingly touching act as it simply indicates that he was married to an heiress. #Churchgoing
