Today is the publication day for my book, Fueling Sovereignty!
@CUP_PoliSci
It explains how oil and other natural resources led to the creation of some of the world's most "unlikely" states.
Available in hardback, paperback, and e-book.

Very excited to share that I've been appointed as Associate Professor of Security Studies at the University of Tokyo. (I'll still be in the UK until mid-Sep.)
My article, "Colonial Oil and State-Making: The Separate Independence of Qatar and Bahrain," has been accepted at Comparative Politics! Will write a thread when it's out but just wanted to share the news🥳
Some personal news: I passed the viva with no corrections! My examiners, Todd Hall and Jason Sharman, gave me excellent feedback and encouragement. I won't forget the moment.
I guess you can now call me Dr. Mukoyama🎓
Pleased to share my new article "The Eastern cousins of European sovereign states? The development of linear borders in early modern Japan" in
@EuroJournIR
! Have a read if you’re interested in territory, global IR, historical IR, or Japan. A short 🧵:
Extremely happy to announce that I have signed a contract with Cambridge University Press to publish my book, "Fueling Sovereignty: Colonial Oil and the Creation of Unlikely States."🥳
Submitted the final corrections to the proof of my book, which now has a cover photo and generous endorsements from Jason Sharman, Andrew Phillips, Emily Meierding, and Todd Hall! Only a few months until publication📚
I am delighted to announce that my article "Colonial origins of the resource curse: endogenous sovereignty and authoritarianism in Brunei" has been published in Democratization!
The Merze Tate Prize for Best Article in Historical International Relations is awarded to
@naomukoyama
for "The Eastern cousins of European sovereign states? The development of linear borders in early modern Japan" (EJIR 2023)!
In this crazy period of pandemic and dissertation writing, nothing is better than your work being recognized.
I'm humbled and excited to announce that I have received an honorable mention for the Best Graduate Student Paper Award of the HIST section of ISA!🥳
Arrived in the UK and will spend the next two months in Oxford.
I hope to do some book talks during my stay here, so if you have any relevant seminar series or other opportunities in the UK/Europe, please let me know! I could cover my own travel expenses.
Back in 🇯🇵 after five years in 🇬🇧. So sad to leave but excited about the new chapter. Also a big transition from no one with a mask anywhere to everyone with one everywhere. I wouldn't compare the food, am just posting pics (I do like fish & chips).
How to publish a first academic book? The “diss to book” transition can be daunting. I’ve collected some of my experience w the process inspired by
@pstanpolitics
's post. (FYI this targets first-time authors in polisci/social sciences) THREAD
I would be very happy to travel basically anywhere (or online) to give a talk about the book. I'll be based in the UK between May and July and in Japan otherwise, so please get in touch if you have relevant seminar series, workshops, etc.🙏

A bit late to the party but our panel, "Historical state formation in East Asia," has been accepted for
#ISA2023
! It's the first panel I've ever organized and am so excited about the lineup🤩 See you all in Montreal!
My article
@Journal_CompPol
titled "Colonial Oil and State-Making: The Separate Independence of Qatar and Bahrain” has been published online! A short 🧵:
I'm genuinely touched by the reviews for my book manuscript — how constructive their feedback is, how deeply they engaged with the material, how helpful their suggestions are, etc. Is it just me or are reviews for a book generally better than those for an article??
So glad to know the editor of a top IR journal thinks this way. As he suggests, recognizing our own biases is not a goal but just a starting point, but it certainly is crucial.

[thread] about peer-review, bias, & how reviewers engage w/ articles from authors who are not native English speakers.
I've noticed at
@Journal_IS
reviewers often write comments like: "Also, it's clear English is not the author's native language."

Another farewell, this time not for me but for our amazing
@Dept_of_POLIS
@HistoryIr
colleague, Jaakko Heiskanen. He doesn't smile in front of the camera, but he's actually very happy that he's joining
@QMPoliticsIR
as a permanent lecturer. Congrats Jaaaakkkko!
If you're at
#ISA2023
and interested in state formation, historical IR, and/or East Asia, join us tomorrow at 8:15 am at this panel I put together! (especially if you're jetlagged like me✈️)
In 2020, ISA in Honolulu got cancelled. Two years later, I not only attended my first in-person
#ISA2022
but also got to visit Hawaii for
#AAS2022
! I'm now exhausted but the past two weeks have been great to say the least😊
>RTs 少し違う論点だけど、国際関係論が政治学の下位区分だという認識自体も、北米の外では必ずしも共有されていないと思う。イギリスでは、Politics and International Relationsという学部名の所が多く、同学部だが政治学とIRは別々のプログラムだったりする。政治経済学部の政治と経済みたいな。
比較政治学会のニューズレターに、「質的方法論と院生にとってのアドバイス:Equifinalityの観点から」と題したコラムを書かせて頂きました。Wrote a column for the newsletter of the Japan Association for Comparative Politics.
Thank you so much for sharing my book! It was literally made in
@Politics_Oxford
, despite getting published by the press associated with the other school😉 Looking forward to visiting DPIR next month!
Congratulations to DPhil alumnus
@naomukoyama
who has recently published 'Fueling Sovereignty – Colonial Oil and the Creation of Unlikely States' with

🥳
@ide_jetro
My article published in 2018 in Ajia Keizai (Asian Economy) was the journal's most-accessed article of the month!
Submitted three chapters of my dissertation for the confirmation of status (Oxford jargon for interim assessment)!🥳 I think I deserve a day off.
Later this year, I will join Cambridge as a postdoctoral fellow
@Dept_of_POLIS
and a JRF at
@WolfsonCam
! Looking forward to becoming part of "the other school," especially
@HistoryIr
.
Paper accepted for British International Studies Association (

Academics, share your salaries as an act of solitary. It is important for undergraduate and graduate students to know, because there are a lot of myths about what academics make in a year. I’ll start and follow my format: Sociology - Assistant Prof (TT) - $57k.
