“The most important reason for going from one place to another is to see what's in between, and they took great pleasure in doing just that.”
― Norton Juster, The Phantom Tollbooth
Why is Atlanta broke? Why do we have food deserts? Why don't people use transit? Why do we have a housing shortage?
I dunno. If someone could just figure it out.
Ethan Couch is a murdering asshole. I'm livid he wasn't in jail for killing people. I'm not going to celebrate him going back to jail for testing positive for THC when the pointless illegality of that drug disproportionately affects POC. Send him to prison for murder. Not weed.
One of my top pet peeves from elected officials/city workers: "I can't take MARTA. I have a busy schedule."
Yes. All the people on MARTA aren't busy. They're just relaxing. Not going to work or home or shopping or to a meeting. Just, you know riding around.
I have a lot of thoughts on
#CopCity
but the biggest question I have is this. The
@atlpolicefdn
says that the training center is needed b/c the old facilities are in disrepair and out of date. So why, before we cut down a forest and give them $30M of Atlantan's money /1
Seriously,
@Michael_J_Bond
has been cited for ethics violations so often he can't afford to pay them. And this is the person
@andreforatlanta
has front in center advocating for
#copcity
. Atlanta is broken.
why has no one asked, "If you have $60M to spend on this project, why did you let the previous facilities fall into such disrepair?"
And it's not like the APF is saying, "We just need a better center (more on that later)" /2
While
@andreforatlanta
is having a blast in London for the Falcon's game, I'm getting panicked texts from volunteers at the
@lifelineanimal
event about why the
@Atlanta_Police
is raiding them and towing their cars while being doxxed for a petition. This has really gone too far.
You have to fucking love that Fulton County just gave $40M in tax breaks to a movie studio and I can't give a dog that I found tied to a telephone pole to the shelter because they're full and out of money. Fuck every movie ever filmed there and fuck the DAFC and the commissioners

You do realize that it's not censorship for a privately owned platform to determine what's said on their site?
It's not censorship if a newspaper rejects your letter to the editor.
It's not censorship when I determine what flyers can b posted on the community board in my store
First, if anyone is interested in signing the petition to get the vote regarding
#copcity
on the ballot, I have copies at Westview Corner Grocery at 1562 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd SW. I'm there 10-8 Sunday, 8-8 Monday, and 8-2ish Thursday-Saturday. Put your name on paper. /1
Due to human activity, we will no longer be providing our service of moving humans around.
Please note that there is ample parking around the event.
AMPLE!
We strongly encourage you to drink and drive rather than use this mass transit service that we won't be providing.
Personally, I wouldn't donate $30 much less $30M to a nonprofit with that track record of facility maintenance and care.
But we are literally on the verge of giving $30M and acres of forest to an organization with no track record of building or maintaining a training center. /4
A car dependent city is not greener or more climate-resilient even if the car is electric. Reduce car dependence. How about a pic of the mayor walking to the grocery store?
Nice car, Mayor
@andreforatlanta
!
We are electrifying our fleet to move Atlanta forward to a greener, more climate-resilient future. The Atlanta Mayor's official car is now electric. 🔌🚗
They're saying, "We need $30M and a forest b/c honestly for the last several decades we didn't give a shit about the training centers. Didn't spend $ on them. Didn't ask the city to maintain. Didn't give a shit. But if you give us $30M we promise to give a shit this time. " /3
Absolutely chilling. And disgusting that the city that claims to be the birthplace of the civil rights movement is using the same language of "out of state agitators" that was directed against MLK, John Lewis, Julian Bond, and essentially the entire civil rights movement. /1
Ok. First off, "unsheltered people" ARE IN FACT THE PUBLIC and have just as much right to use the public space as anyone else. 2nd, I've never seen a Downtown park so "overrun" that I couldn't find a spot of greenspace to sit down on and relax. Bad take.
Atlanta: We should have hosted the DNC.
Taylor Swift and Janet Jackson: We're performing the same night.
Atlanta: EVERYONE PANIC! STAY HOME! WE'RE NOT PREPARED FOR THIS! STOCK UP ON TOILET PAPER, MILK, BREAD, AND BEER!
No. We don't need rail on the Beltline b/c it was the promise & what the taxpayers voted 4. Lots of reasons why we need it but that's a different post. The thing is why the fuck am I going to meetings & voting when the mayor just changes direction because a few people are upset?
we don't have money in the budget for affordable housing. We can't sweep our streets or fix potholes or hire enough police officers or etc etc etc and you want $30M and a forest that you have at best a shitty record of doing?"
"Yes." -
@atlpolicefdn
City Hall - "Cool." /6
Watching all the speakers tonight at city council and I hope people know that it takes a lot of courage. Public speaking is terrifying to a lot of people. Getting up before council, knowing you may end up on national tv is NOT easy. You hear the tremors in the voices. /1
As people are piling on
@andreforatlanta
for backtracking on BeltLine rail, remember that one of his early acts as mayor was to kill the Peachtree complete streets project b/c a rich developer didn't like it. Our transportation mayor has always been about cars.
Narrator: After being impressed by Montreal's transit and walkability, Atlanta's reps returned and voted against removing parking minimums along the BeltLine and Invest Atlanta gave millions of dollars to finance parking.
Just going to throw this out there for
@andreforatlanta
. Turn every World Cup match into an
@ATLStreetsAlive
event as well. Rather than have our guests witness angry and confused drivers in congestion looking for $150 parking spaces, give them streets w/ activity and people. /1
Here's why I'm angry. I'm angry ATL prioritizes cars over people. I'm angry we prioritize the suburbs over our residents. I'm angry we prioritize Fortune 500 over people. I'm angry we prioritize perceived fame over fairness. I'm angry we don't really care.
Atlanta Airport: We've got this 145 acre parcel of land that isn't being used. It's just good for industrial uses. It's right next to a noisy interstate and airport.
Anyone with common sense: That would be a great place for a cop training center.
Nah.
Dear
@andreforatlanta
, we've known each other for years. I've always known that you were politically ambitious and you've always known that I have an agenda and while we have not always agreed on certain outcomes I believe we are honest with each other and, most importantly, /1
I'm trying to wrap my head around the
#copcity
vote. But first I want to give a round of applause to all the speakers who took time out of their day to attend a council meeting. Although my thoughts on public comment/input are complicated. /1
The city of Atlanta is seriously considering giving $30M, acres of forest, to an organization with no track record of having any capacity to do this because...? /10
It's adjacent to two MARTA stops on the E/W line and not a far walk from Five Points if you don't want to transfer or just enjoy a nice walk up Marietta. I'm hypercritical of Atlanta but this rating is just either clickbait or ill informed.
i am inspired to grade every MLS stadium since many are being built in good, walkable urbanism. i will rank them at the end:

Dear
@AtlantaBeltLine

@andreforatlanta
: This facility is not for the militarization of the police.
Also: You can totally train with us for military operations like the SWAT.
Also: We will send TEN SWAT team people with assault rifles drawn to arrest three people.
I’m deeply concerned about the raid directed by the Georgia Attorney General’s office today in Edgewood, a dense and thriving residential neighborhood in Atlanta.
I’m trying to get more information.
Narrator: The trail was not completed by the World Cup. And also, WHY THE FUCK DOES THE WORLD CUP MATTER AND NOT RESIDENTS WHO LIVE HERE? SEEMS LIKE WE'RE THE PRIORITY AND THE REASON, RIGHT? YES, I'M IN ALL CAPS MODE TODAY!
Thanks to an accelerated construction schedule, there will be 17.9 miles of paved, continuous trail open for exploring by

Atlanta: Hey, councilmembers, remember when you voted for the $23M pedestrian bridge to nowhere?
Council: Yeah, that was a mistake. We rushed that b/c we were told it was a crisis and we needed it.
Atlanta: How'd that work out?
Council: Not our fault. It was a crisis.
This will do nothing for recruitment or retention of police officers. Anything you read about that is officer morale based on pay, pensions, and public perception of the police. There aren't recruits out there saying, "Dude, I chose Atlanta because they had new white boards!" /11
I think the same thing anytime one of your tweets comes across my feed. That when I worked at Cafe Lily 2001-2002 I always had to wait on you because I was the only male server and you groped the female servers incessantly. Groped them. Incessantly.
Atlanta has over 450k registered voters. About 14k of them showed up to vote yesterday in the school board runoff election. About 50% of property taxes collected go to APS. APS has a $1.6B budget, twice the size of city hall. And 3% of voters turned out.
Mostly a parking lot and a driving course. I'm not making this up. It's a few buildings, a giant parking lot, horse stables, and a circle for trainees to drive vehicles around in. Seriously, it's a parking lot. /8
Do police and fire fighters need training? Yes. Does this facility provide that in a way that could cost less on more appropriate land? Yes. Did it need to cost someone their life? No. Stop this insanity and start asking questions
@andreforatlanta
and let it go. /end
#copcity
is deteriorating into a bigger mess.
@andreforatlanta
: Who knows if the people signing petitions at local grocery stores are residents?
Also Andre, a friend of mine polled Georgians that don't live in Atlanta and they're totally for the center!/1
That's mind blowing to me. Absolutely mind blowing.
Of all the arguments about the forest and the militarization of the police (valid but falling on deaf political ears) you would think that
@andreforatlanta
and someone on
@atlcouncil
would say, "Ummm... /5
Just a reminder that as a city, Atlanta approved more public money for Mercedez Benz Stadium than we've allocated for infrastructure and affordable housing... combined.

Apparently
@andreforatlanta
is now the CEO of

and also found about $3B of money lying around.
Look, I'd love for these things to happen but this all show, no substance. And certainly no funding.
BREAKING: Mayor Andre Dickens announces new MARTA heavy rail stops:
Krog Street-Hulsey Yard
Joseph E. Boone Blvd
Armour Yards
Murphy Crossing (previously announced)
In addition, Dickens calls for bus-rapid transit line from redeveloped Bowen Homes to Ponce City Market.
Mayor
@andreforatlanta
announces the end of BeltLine Rail with word salad.
"What I'm doing now is making sure, as we're on the precipice of moving forward with a decision on what type of modality, let's go ahead and get today's numbers and today's types of technologies."
I'm not sure what
@andreforatlanta
's political endgame for just digging his heels in the sand over
#copcity
is but if he's got a better argument than "they said this site was cool" and "meh, everyone else is wrong and we'll fight them in court anyway" now's a good time to hear it
More than 25 Georgia voting rights organizations released a letter addressed to Atlanta city council and Interim City Clerk Vanessa Waldon over the city’s announced process to verify referendum signatures collected to put the public safety training center on the ballot.

Tyler Perry Studios has done nothing to improve the conditions (economic or otherwise) in the surrounding areas and her office has no data on how many people in the adjacent neighborhoods have gained employment. No data. It's a walled city that could've been so much more.
Councilmember Joyce Sheperd has led the way in adding to Atlanta's thriving film & entertainment industry. including the development of Tyler Perry Studios, and the redevelopment of Fort McPherson. To read more visit .
#atlanta
Um, what? Most of the customers of a local grocery store are actually, you know, local and residents. I'm proud of my grocery store but pretty sure people aren't travelling from around the country to visit us.
I'm just here to remind everyone that MARTA eliminated construction of two of the stations on the Summerhill BRT route due to lack of funds. So tell me more about these 4 much more expensive infill stations...
Promises made. Promises not kept. Look, I get it
@andreforatlanta
. Things change. But really? After years, and years, and years of studies you're going with... pods?
One of the key things to remember is that almost none of our elected officials in Atlanta will ever walk to a grocery store, take public transit to work, ride a "pod" , in the future or bike to anything... outside of a photo op. Like, "Hey, I'm on the bus! It's Rosa Parks Day!"
CM Lewis introduces ELMS 34324, an ordinance to prohibit the wearing of ski masks, masks, barrier face coverings, hoods or any other device that conceals the identify of the wearer.
It's worth pointing out that
@Michael_J_Bond
has served on council since 2009 and during that time he never once cared that the existing training facilities weren't being maintained. And he claims he knew the full price of the new training center and never once spoke up.
Reading the article by
@savokanikan
in the
@AtlBizChron
about NCR subleasing their office spaces and somehow I feel like the millions of $s they received to locate here should be mentioned somewhere. /1
What I love about
@Michael_J_Bond
retweeting this and is that he's basically saying, "I've been an at large councilmember for 14 years and during my time we all just let the existing facilities fall to shit. I never really cared before."
Car accident in the parking lot. Guy drove into a telephone pole. 30 minutes on hold for 911. Not sure how
#copcity
fixes that. And I'm not talking 30 minutes waiting for response. ON HOLD. Don't tell me this city isn't broke, that we don't have $ for essential operations.
"And what are we getting for this $30M and the forest?"
"This is going to blow your state of the art, world class mind!"
I'll leave the imagined dialogue now and cut to the chase. We're not getting
#CopCity
. That would actually be maybe an improvement. We're getting /7
Taking the
@MARTAtransit
poll regarding the redo of Five Points. "What would encourage you to spend more time in this area?" I don't know. Maybe more benches, businesses, and fewer signs telling me not to spend time here?
That state of the art education center. It's got chairs and tables and whiteboards. And a fitness center with treadmills and barbells. State of the art stuff. /9
Now
@andreforatlanta
gets to see that all the petitions I collected at the local grocery store are, gasp, local residents. He hasn't been this upset since a parking deck at a Publix collapsed. Since my name is on many petitions, guess I've been doxxed as well. Not a big secret. 1
I mean I know as a public official I’m bound to get doxxed when big things happen. I didn’t expect
@andreforatlanta
’s office to do said doxxing. Happy Friday I guess!

BREAKING: Reynoldstown neighbors vote 79-16 AGAINST the development of a 42-unit affordable housing project on Moreland.
The developers will take this vote to the ATL Housing Authority. It’s unclear if this will derail public financing for the project.
6 people abstained.
Just going to follow up on this. Here's what the petition looks like. Most of it is filled up with legalese and there's only room for 5 signatures per page. There has to be a qualified witness that fills out the top part. 5 signatures per page to get to 75,000 means 15,000 /1
Just a reminder that you can sign the petition at Westview Corner Grocery store at 1562 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd SW. Yes
@andreforatlanta
, we are collecting them with honesty and truth.
Now that the Mayor of Atlanta is committed to an infill station at Armour Yard, a project that will require *at minimum* 8 years to develop and execute, now is the time to begin planning work on an adjacent multimodal passenger terminal to support intercity rail.
Alright, since Develop Fulton is in the news today regarding the tax abatement for twitter, let's talk about what these development authorities do, what they claim to accomplish, and most importantly how they impact the budgets of the schools, city, and county. /1
I have lots of thoughts about the 5Points renovation but one that stands out is when people say we can apply for fed funds for
@andreforatlanta
's infill station.
"So, let me understand. You are spending $250M on a vanity project for the World Cup but it won't be done on time /1
ICYMI: The Five Points station redevelopment and the recently announced infill
@MARTATransit
stations were the focus of continued construction and expansion on April 11.
I think "Be aware that kids are walking to school, please drive slowly and don't drive distracted" is a much better message.
It's definitely the 75 pound children that need to be cautious, not the people behind the wheel of a few tons of metal.
Thumbs up,
@GADeptofTrans
!
Once
#copcity
is completed they'll be able to do training on "When a car is parked on the sidewalk, this is how you pull over and issue a citation." But without cop city, they'll never know how to pull over and keep our sidewalks clear of cars.
Squeezing around the vehicles that are regularly parked on the sidewalk at the North Avenue
@MARTAtransit
station is infuriating. It's been like this for years. I can't believe there's no way to ensure this doesn't happen.
I'm not saying that the
@atlpolicefdn
and the
@CityofAtlanta
didn't do their due diligence, but it literally took me less than 5 minutes to find city owned property that's already noisy, direct access to the interstate, not near residential, not on a forest...
Let's talk about how broke the city of Atlanta is. Not broken as in corrupt or terrible but basically just unable to pay 4 things.
Let's start w/ Firetrucks! Everyone likes firetrucks* & calendars of firemen. Except the city of Atlanta can't afford 2 maintain or replace them /1
I've been involved in Atlanta politics for 13 years now. I'm not at the big boy table but every now and then I'm invited into the room to at least see and hear what's going on.
Part of me wants to just say fuck it. The Atlanta Way is inertia and nothing is going to change. /1
Summary: Tonight the Zoning Review Board recommended denial of a simple rezoning request from
@atllandtrust
for permanently affordable housing b/c it would change the character of West End and voted against banning new drive thrus b/c equity means fast food in South Atlanta.
There is a remarkable irony that while Atlanta is branding itself as A City in a Forest and is also "addressing" its affordable housing crisis will delay or stop affordable housing b/c of trees while bulldozing a forest to build a fake city that will house no one.
Just a reminder that you can sign the petition at Westview Corner Grocery store at 1562 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd SW. Yes
@andreforatlanta
, we are collecting them with honesty and truth.
Question: what’s your reaction to the referendum
Dickens: we ask that they collect the signatures with honesty and truth…I don’t personally believe they are going to be successful. What we know is that Atlantan’s support the Public Safety Training Center
I was a witness for a couple hundred petitions. My signature is crap and doesn't always look the same. Will entire petitions be voided because they're not quite sure that's my signature at the top?
@atlcouncil
If my signature is rejected, can I appeal so that my signature can be counted?
How will I know that my signature has been counted?
I think residents should be able to appeal if COA inaccurately removes a signature
@CopCityVote
I just found out that Cortland Development is the largest employer in the city of Atlanta. Ahead of Delta and Coke and CNN. And if you add in Cortland Management it's really not even close. I've never even heard of them before.
For the record, the renovation of the Five Points station so we could have a shiny new plaza for the World Cup (oops, won't be done in time) is about $250M. There's no way
@andreforatlanta
and
@MARTAtransit
are building 4 new stations on the current budget.
TLDR of all the meetings and conversations I've been involved with over the last few months. Atlanta's new (NIMBY) motto:
"I'm progressive. I support transit and walkability and density and affordable housing. Just take your progressive project to another neighborhood please."
You know what makes me bang my head against the wall? When I hear an elected official or transportation engineer justify building for cars b/c "We're not NYC. We don't have their transit infrastructure."
Now, I lived in NYC. Which I know is a cardinal sin in Atlanta since /1
I guess
@KeishaBottoms
is too busy doing CNN interviews and her ongoing PR campaign to address the APD murder last night, to rethink the budget, to rethink policing...
Whomever pieces together what's going on & gets a few people on the record and a few people anonymous should win a Pulitzer. I have a few pieces of the puzzle. Others have a few. But it's a 1000 piece puzzle. And the three people that can put the picture on the box aren't talking
CEO of Marta gave quarterly update to FulCo commission this morn. Did not include any info on the 4 new stations, which certainly impact FulCo, and there were 0 ?s from the commissioners about the infill stations. 3 commissioners have ATL voters in their districts. Just so odd.
"Sir, mask?"
"Cigarettes will kill me faster than COVID."
"Yeah, I don't have 2 close my store if u get lung cancer. I don't have 2 replace all my perishables that will go bad if we're closed if u smoke. I don't have 2 come up with $ 4 my employees w/out income. Wear your mask.
Let me get this straight. Wal-Mart, the largest retailer in the US with $600B in sales last year, will be getting money from
@InvestAtlanta
AND essentially a publicly paid for security presence while exacerbating ATL's food desert problem by keeping us in the model of big box /2
I'll be on
@ATLNewsFirst
today, in my balaclava (which I admit is a little silly since it's not that cold today but was good motivation to go into the attic and find it in preparation for the cold) discussing how this criminalizes biking, walking, waiting for the bus in the cold.
At the end of today’s Atlanta City Council meeting, Councilmember Antonio Lewis introduced an ordinance that would ban any sort of face coverings that obscure identity in the city of Atlanta. There are some exceptions in the proposed legislation for religion, work and holidays.
Atlanta wants advice: How can it attract more fresh grocery options?
City to poll developers and grocery operators on ways to increase access to healthy foods
Just realized that the flyer for this event makes no mention that it's a
@BATransit
event. Unless you're deep into the weeds on this stuff you'd just think, "That's a cool panel of people that have had an enormous impact on this city!" and not an anti-streetcar meeting.
Ya'll... I'm involved in several conversations in neighborhoods about parking and I had forgotten how bat shit fucking insane people were about parking.
What if the default parking for every development in Atlanta was zero and the developers had to go the Board of Zoning Adjustment to justify the parking they intended to build?
