I feel like this bio shows the lack of knowledge Wizards has on older pros, especially non-Americans. Akira Asahara has two Worlds top 8s, two GP wins and was one of the OG modo grinders. He’s also known as being one of the most renowned deck builders in Japan.

I understand there’s legal issues around age for these Arena PTs, but I genuinely feel bad for all these teenagers not getting to play in PTs they’ve qualified for. When I qualified for a PT at age 15, WOTC even paid for my dad’s flight from NZ ($2k-ish) just so I could attend.

If there are other parties involved, then we have to respect their right to privacy. Public exposure is often the biggest barrier for victims to discuss about what happened, and their pain should not come at the expense of the public feeling they "deserve" to know what happened.

Won a local modern event yesterday with Rainbow Dredge! Played @MtgSodek ’s 75 and it felt good, though Nature’s Claim probably isn’t necessary as it seems Leyline is still not played much, and I’d like more Gemstone Caverns. Highly recommend it though!

Back from the RC, where unfortunately none of us made Top 8, but Michael came 9th and should get a PT invite passed down! I played Rakdos - did poorly in the RC but split the top 8 of the $5k. Our list felt great, and we had a 71% (39-16) win rate with it! Highly recommend it :)

Best mail day I’ve ever had 😍 Was taught how to use Taobao (Chinese Amazon) and after spending many hours using scryfall to find the names, I managed to get most of what I wanted. Especially stoked about all the Dredge cards, which I’ve literally been trying to find for years!

PSA: If you won $ in MTG and are living in EU/UK/Aus/NZ, I highly recommend opening a borderless account on TransferWise and create a US bank account on it so you can transfer your winnings there and then exchange to your currency and withdraw. Significantly better exchange rate.

Lost the finals of a 9-player RCQ, but the winner was already qualified so I got the invite anyway 😅 Went 5-2 with stock Boros Convoke, beating two mirrors, Domain Ramp, Simic Artifacts and Bant Toxic, and losing to two mirrors. Got to play with some sweet tokens too!

The Dredge list I played at GP Ghent (same 75 as @Mengu09 ) with a full SB guide. The deck was very well positioned last weekend, and in the midst of Whirza's extended success, that may continue to be the case. Highly recommend it until people respect it.

People like to bag on WOTC all the time, but I actually think MH2 has been terrific so far. Both MH1 and MH2 attempted to make Modern a more fair format, and Hogaak aside, they've achieved that. MH2 is also much better than MH1 (their first attempt), and I can't wait for MH3!

I think with the current OP system, returning World Magic Cup may be a good idea. The RCs are natrually cross-borders, which removes a lot of that inter-city rivalry that existed with PTQs/Nats, but also your country has no guaranteed slots for the PT, hence people to root for.

Incredible weekend at the Aus/NZ RC! I went 5-3, but my teammate Ben Kemp won the event playing the same 75! Once again, we crushed the event - over the season, we made the finals of all 3 RCs, won 2, and took up a quarter of the Top 8 slots (6/24)! Absolutely love this team ❤️❤️

Woke up at midnight on a Monday to play the MODO RPTQ and got there :) That makes it three for three in constructed RPTQs I have played online. Maybe it's a good thing to live in an isolated country where I can't travel to any RPTQ :P Anyway, off for a morning run then work!

Finished 12-3 (15th) with BUG Delver. The deck was incredible, and @Mengu09 came up with an amazing plan for the Delver mirror (and just overall great SB strategies). Our combined swiss record was 19-5 (excl byes and draws). Hopefully he now takes down the Top 8!! #MTGBologna

Also I touched on this in my latest article, but I strongly feel that the players at the very top are some of the most passionate hobbyists. The return on time/resources even at the PT level isn’t very justifiable on EV alone, but people do it solely for the love of the game.

I think the Silver Showcase would have been better as an Unstable draft where each player is battling for charity. Magic can't compete with HS as a digital TCG - instead show the wonderful joys that you can share with your opponent that can only come from being a physical game.

It’s so weird how this has double the prize pool of the old PTs but no one seems to care about it except the people playing in it and the most hardcore grinders. It was never about the money, and I’m sure they can create an OP program that can put half a million $ to better use.

A month back, I made this tweet and randomly setup a discord group and gave the link to a bunch of people. Turns out, we got some absolute ringers in the group, and we put three people into the top 8 of the Aus/NZ RC, and one in the Asian RC - all playing the same 73/75 cards.

Going through old photos and found this deck I went 2-1 with at PT Amonkhet. I remember opening my first pack and Slither Blade was the best card but the night before in our team meeting we talked about how we would be able to wheel it cause nobody knew about it. It wheeled.

Talking to a friend about old MTG stories, I once had a friend photoshop an Expedia flight itinerary for me so I could move my final exam at Uni to go to PT Ixalan. (They’d only let me move it if I could prove I’d booked my flights prior to the exam schedule being released).

What always stood out to me about @Vendilion at events is that he was always watching the top players. During rounds, while players were huddled up with their friends and talking, he was always railbirding a top pro and watching intently. A true student and master of the game!

Competed in my third RCQ today and made the Top 8, scooping to @Sqlut on the way who got the invite. Played UR Control, which I thought could be tuned better so I put together a list and went 17-3 including two trophies in leagues this week. I’ve now got a set of Nykthos :p

This is literally the most Simon-esque way to win a GP! Missing the first round due to sleeping in, mise-ing in at 8th place on breakers, and then drawing little artworks for Spyglass in the finals. Love him so much! @MrChecklistcard

Heading home now, but this past week was one of the best Magic experiences I ever had. It's unreal to think that this all started with this one tweet, and now we've put three people into the Top 8 of a PT, qualified eight people for Worlds & formed incredible friendships! (1/3)

Went 4-1 at our local legacy event with Esper (Worldgorger) Dragon! I’ve had the idea brewing in my head for a while, but finally put it together. The deck played well and Abdel Adrian is a big upgrade over the previously played Worldgorger Dragon!

Unfortunately lost both my last two rounds to finish 8-8 and miss out on the invite for the next PT 😭 Gutting, but with a 3-7 record in standard, it’s also pretty hard to be upset cause I clearly had no idea what I was doing and I’m proud to have gone 5-1 in limited! #PTMachine

Time to head home after a wonderful week and a bit in Vegas! I’m proud to have finished 34th at my first Worlds, and have had an incredible time preparing and hanging out with team Worldly Counsel throughout the week! Have come to absolutely love everyone on this team so much ❤️

Tied into this as well, is I think GPs are largely what made PTs prestigious. Pro points forced pros to travel around the world for GPs, which then meant people got to meet these pros and made the dream feel tangible as they saw it in front of them. Current PT system doesn't.
