Last summer @mrym_jml and I began looking into the death of an 8-year-old Nicaraguan boy on a Wisconsin dairy farm. What we found was a story of an accumulation of failures in overlapping systems: immigration, labor, policing. We hope you can read.

1/ I recently heard of a disturbing situation at a shelter for immigrant children in Chicago: Young Afghans were harming themselves + others, talking about wanting to die. Their caretakers couldn’t speak their language. So I got my hands on internal emails + police reports.

Police in Wisconsin routinely pull undocumented dairy workers over after running their plates and discovering they don't have a license -- which the state bars them from obtaining. As a result workers feel trapped on the farms where they work & often live.

“I felt exhausted, like I had no strength left in my body, and I had a cough. But the next day I had to go in. For three days I went in like that.” Without paid sick days, factory workers routinely go in sick.

Being almost 8 months pregnant + stressed about a project deadline has put me in some of the weirdest moods. For example, today after an interview, I found myself buying and eating almost an entire fried chicken. Help me.
