Nebraska volleyball is different because of pictures like this. Player on the right, a freshman, beat out the player on the left, a junior, for a job.
Both were No. 1-rated recruits at their position. Both are helping the team win. Neither is in the portal.
What else could happen tonight? Oh, Will Compton and Taylor Lewan are on with Peyton and Eli.
Compton: "Peyton, you know a little bit about Nebraska."
Manning: "I try to forget, Will."
Nebraska AD Trev Alberts will miss the Purdue football game Saturday at Memorial Stadium to attend the wedding of his son, Chase, and Chase’s fiancé Cassie. “I had a nice chat with my wife,” Alberts said, “and she informed me that I would be at the wedding.”
On the heels of an unforgettable night at Memorial Stadium, Adidas announces that it has signed Lexi Rodriguez, Nebraska’s junior All-American libero, to an NIL deal.
Nebraska QB Casey Thompson: "Just control what you can control. I play offense. I play quarterback."
Thompson finished 23 of 34 for 318 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 31 yards and three scores. He did more than enough to win.
Zavier Betts, the former Nebraska wide receiver who gave up football last March, intends to rejoin the Huskers this year, according to a family source. Betts was a four-star prospect out of Bellevue West in the 2020 class. He caught 32 passes in two seasons at Nebraska.
Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola says after taking a day or two off and focusing on finishing the semester of classes, he plans to head to Kansas City to work with Patrick Mahomes and Mahomes' QB trainer, Bobby Stroupe.
Coach Matt Rhule on winning three straight and producing the first unbeaten October at Nebraska since 2001: “None of that means anything when we wake up tomorrow.”
Trev Alberts’ Nebraska has now beaten Iowa in football and Creighton in basketball in a span of nine days.
The Huskers just beat the seventh-ranked Jays 63-53 in Omaha. That was Nebraska’s first regular-season win at Creighton since 1995.
Omar Manning says he thought of Nebraska coach Scott Frost immediately upon scoring his first FBS touchdown Saturday. Frost stuck with Manning, he said, when others might have given up on him as he struggled with mental-health issues.
Trev Alberts suggests that if Nebraska could get Zac Taylor back to Lincoln for the April 9 Red-White game, he’d love to mic up the Bengals coach with Scott Frost and let everyone listen to them talk offensive football.
Sounds good.
Rhule is invoking the names of Juwan Gary, Sam Hoiberg, Josiah Allick, Keisei Tominaga, Jaz Shelley and others. They embody what he loves about Nebraska.
"I’m here," Rhule says. "And I’m all in. And Julie is all in... We’re not going anywhere unless you guys kick us out."
Nebraska coach Matt Rhule, in answering a question about the play of the defense, praised the former coaching staff for getting many of these players ready to play. He mentioned Erik Chinander, Bill Busch, Mike Dawson and Barrett Ruud by name.
That does not usually happen.
Urban Meyer on
@BigTenNetwork
, offering praise for Scott Frost and James Franklin in addition to Ryan Day and the players. "When someone tells you, 'we’re not going to do this,' if you in your heart believe that’s not right, keep swinging. Be respectful, but keep swinging...
Nebraska nose guard Darrion Daniels on Colorado: “My coach don’t like them, so I don’t like them. And that’s the mindset. My teammates got some beef with them. I got beef with them.”
Nebraska coach Matt Rhule on TE Thomas Fidone: "Every school in the country is trying to get him to leave and go there."
Rhule said he appreciates Fidone's loyalty to the Huskers.
Nebraska LB Collin Miller says he’s received medical advice, in the wake of a spinal injury suffered last month, to retire from football. He says he’s grateful to be able to talk and walk and wants to be able to play with his children some day. Coaching may be in his future.
No. 1-ranked Nebraska volleyball looked destined to go down tonight at 16th-ranked Penn State after losing the first two sets.
But the Huskers responded to pull off the reverse sweep. They won the decisive fifth set 15-13.
Nebraska is 22-0.
Nebraska safety Marques Buford: “I can’t wait to see where we go from here. We played the worst game we’re going to play all year, and we still only lost by three. That’s pretty scary.”
A Matt Rhule quote from this week as Nebraska heads to Wisconsin, still in search of that elusive sixth win:
"This is a life we’ve chosen. This world, to me, is always like the mafia. You get hired, eventually you get whacked, and you live as much as you can in between."
Ochaun Mathis selects Nebraska over Texas. The top available player in the transfer portal is coming to Lincoln, providing much needed help as a premier pass rusher.
Tony White told Nebraska defenders that he didn’t plan to do much coaching today, defensive lineman Ty Robinson said.
White just wanted them to let them play and trust their training. We’ll learn more soon on White’s future plans. No matter, he’s made an impact this year.
Nash Hutmacher could have signed autographs and taken pictures with kids for an hour today.
He confirmed that he lost 40 pounds in six weeks to make weight and said he’ll easily put on 15-20 pounds after wrestling season and play football at a weight that makes him more agile.
Frost: "I think our university is committed to playing football any way that we possibly can regardless of what anyone else does." If Nebraska can't play in the Big Ten, he says, they're prepared to look at different options.
Five-star QB Dylan Raiola has flipped from Georgia to Nebraska and will headline the Huskers’ recruiting class this week as the highest-rated signee for the school in the past quarter-century.
Raiola informed the Nebraska staff while on an official visit to Lincoln last weekend.
Matt Rhule pointed up to the seats of former coach Tom Osborne after the Haarberg-to-Coleman TD pass in the fourth quarter.
Osborne told Rhule that if Nebraska used the belly-option run, it had to install that belly-option pass.
First time it was called, a 44-yard touchdown.
Nebraska coach Matt Rhule: "I feel bad for our players. We’re sitting at 5-4. We own 5-4. But we have one game where the team scouted us. We have two games where the replay was wrong."
Replay was handled wrong, he said, in awarding touchdowns to Minnesota and Michigan State.
Ohio State's 5.9 yards per play today against Nebraska is lower than every game of the Ryan Day coaching era other than against Alabama in the CFP title game last year and Penn State in 2019.
A couple thoughts from last night before I turn back to football:
— Matt Rhule has said he wants his players to spend time around excellence.
Last night at Devaney, top football commits Daniel Kaelin and Carter Nelson held up signs in the stands.
(continued) ⬇️
Heinrich Haarberg said his playing weight fluctuates from 215 to 220 pounds. He struggles to keep pounds on during the season. “I can play a game at 210, and I’m going to play like I’m 230. That’s how I was raised.”
Nebraska freshman defender Cameron Lenhardt on coach Matt Rhule’s message of building slowly to solidify the foundation: “I believe it 100 percent in my heart, if we trust in this process, it’s going to happen.”
Nebraska quarterbacks Noah Vedral and Luke McCaffrey finished 19 of 22 for 272 yards. They rushed for 97 yards and Vedral caught a pass. They were not the problem — not even close to it — for the Huskers today against Indiana.
Bryce McGowens, Nebraska’s five-star hoops recruit: “I want to show other kids that you can go to a place that isn’t the so-called big name and have just as much, if not more, of an impact. I plan on doing whatever I can to help this program get to a level it’s never been.”
Nebraska coach Scott Frost: “These fans deserve a team that played like we did tonight.” Frost said he looked around the stadium and couldn’t find an empty seat. Special night for him at Memorial Stadium.
What’s most amazing about Nebraska volleyball, looking at the numbers against Texas, is the play of the freshmen. They led the way. Huskers had the top-ranked recruiting class, yes, but the development since August is remarkable.
Again and again, that program sets the standard.
The Raiolas (Dominic, Dylan and Dayton) are in Nebraska at this hour.
It is a recruiting dead period through Tuesday. So Dylan, the No. 1 prospect for 2024, and fellow QB Dayton, a 2026 prospect with a Nebraska offer, can spend time w/their uncle Donovan — but not other coaches.
Four-star athlete Malachi Coleman of Lincoln East has committed to Nebraska.
A big win for interim coach Mickey Joseph and the Huskers’ staff, who have kept intact this class and now added an elite talent in Coleman. He had offers from the likes of Georgia, USC and Oklahoma.
Rhule says that he's sending his son to Nebraska next fall and that his wife is opening a business in Lincoln because they believe in this state.
He continues with an extensive statement about what he sees for Nebraska ahead.
"We must have vision for the future," Rhule says.
Standout Nebraska cornerback, an honorable-mention All-Big Ten pick, with a classy exit after his five seasons in Lincoln. He is out of collegiate eligibility.
Andy Hoffman will be deeply missed. The co-founder of the Team Jack Foundation and father of Jack Hoffman, who won the hearts of Nebraska fans as a cancer patient, Andy died Monday after his own battle with brain cancer. His passion in fighting this terrible disease was amazing.
Nash Hutmacher wins by fall at just over two minutes into the first period against his competitor from Wyoming.
Matt Rhule, Tony White and the whole Devaney Center erupted.
I am excited to announce I am a Cornhusker! Although there were great things about all of my top three schools, I firmly believe in what is being built by Coach Rhule and his staff. I want to thank everyone who has helped me and made this process special. God bless and GBR!! 🌽🎈
Transfer QB Casey Thompson, after seeing Nebraska today, has a top group of schools, according to his dad Charles, the former Oklahoma QB, of Nebraska, Oklahoma, Auburn, Indiana and Missouri.
With Memorial Stadium sadly sitting empty, why not play a big high school game there every Thursday or Friday night? Instead of family only in attendance at HS stadiums, let fans in to spread out.
Ted Carter has a special place in this Big Ten saga. First his email to Kevin Warren, from an account Carter knew was open to public exposure, reminding the commish that “you work for us.”
Now this. Carter needs to actually drop a mic at midfield before Nebraska’s first kickoff.
Final from Memorial Stadium: Nebraska 31, Purdue 14.
The Huskers are 5-3 and one win from bowl eligibility. They’ve won three consecutive games for the first time since 2016.
The progress is real.
Nebraska RB Emmett Johnson adds after his media availability a message of support for longtime radio announcer Greg Sharpe, who announced last week that he’s fighting cancer.
This is Nebraska RB Jaquez Yant at 232 pounds. He’s down about 20 pounds from his weight at the start of last season. He’s a factor, for sure, in the backfield this spring.
“It got heavy for me,” Dylan Raiola says of the moment he came out of tunnel today at Memorial Stadium.
He’s dreamed for years, he said, of playing in that uniform. Today at the spring game gave him a taste of it.
Caleb Tannor goes out with a win and with the record for playing in the most games ever at Nebraska. Tannor said he dedicated this victory at Iowa to all of his former teammates who didn’t get it done against the Hawkeyes.
Nebraska has been fortunate to get quarterbacks in Casey Thompson and Adrian Martinez over the past five years who’ve been so thoughtful and gracious in public with their time. They’re both outstanding representatives of their schools.
(Save your comments about their records.)
Britt Prince of Elkhorn North has committed to play basketball at Nebraska ahead of the early signing period.
Prince is a five-star-rated point guard and one of the best talents to come out of this state in many years.
A massive recruiting win for Amy Williams.
Nebraska men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg has been extended two years through 2029 and given a $1 million annual raise to $4.25 million.
Interim AD Dennis Leblanc and interim university system president Chris Kabourek make the announcement.
On the day Gretna lost its basketball coach, Brad Feeken, the Dragons defeated previously unbeaten Papillion-LaVista South 49-47.
Buzzer beater by Feeken’s star pupil, Landon Pokorski.
Sevion Morrison is one of the happiest guys I’ve ever met around football. He says he’s been “manifesting” this day for weeks. Morrison scored two touchdowns in his Nebraska debut. Big smile for the running back from Tulsa.
Marques Buford’s return this month from a knee injury has allowed him to take a four-game redshirt and preserve a year of eligibility. He’ll have two seasons in the program with his brother, Mario, a committed DB from DeSoto, Texas. They’ve never played together on the same team.
Actual full context is this: Nebraska players took an extended time to get off the court, because of the celebration. When they showed up for the press conference, Iowa still had not come out of the locker room.
The Nebraska SID said when the Huskers started that he would…
For full context: From my understanding, it's Big Ten protocol that the road team speaks to the media first.
From what I'm told-- Nebraska players were speaking with the media first.
Former Nebraska running backs coach Ryan Held is set to be announced as the head coach at Nebraska-Kearney, according to a source. Held spent 2022 at North Alabama, finishing the season as interim head coach. He has 12 seasons of experience as a head coach in D-II and the NAIA.
Regardless of what comes of Nebraska-Oklahoma in 2021, it says something that Nebraska has not responded to this report.
It has turned fast into a punchline. This silence makes the football program look mismanaged at best in this situation and more to the point, scared of OU.
As a coach, if you're successful on three consecutive challenges, as John Cook has been for Nebraska, you should get an extra challenge opportunity awarded -- just to counteract the inadequacy of the officials.
Nebraska had one interception in its first four games. It's had four interceptions in the past two games under Bill Busch, including three tonight in the comeback win at Rutgers.
Joseph said he's OK with the decision of WR Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda, who caught a touchdown in the opener, to enter the transfer portal today. "He wasn't happy. He wanted to be the No. 1 guy. We couldn't do that for him." The coach wished him well.
It's difficult to overstate how significant for Nebraska athletics as a whole it would rate to have Jordy Bahl competing in Lincoln.
She is the rare transcendent, homegrown, world-class athlete -- the Jordan Larson, Johnny Rodgers, Ahman Green category.
Tommie Frazier stopped into Memorial Stadium today. He visited with former Nebraska teammate Trev Alberts. The AD took Frazier to the second-level coaching offices, where he met new OC Marcus Satterfield.
Coach Matt Rhule is on the road recruiting.
The statement made today by Nebraska offensive lineman Nouredin Nouili. He was suspended last June for the 2022 season for his failure of a drug test.
Nouili came to Nebraska from Germany as an exchange student in high school. He’ll be a fifth-year junior this fall.
Matt Rhule on the "So God Made a Farmer" montage of Nebraska football clips that he asked
@itsjlitt
to create last Wednesday: "This is who we are. This is place we’re supposed to be. I might have been born in New York City, don’t get me wrong, but this is the ethos. This is the…
Jaylen Lloyd, with fellow Nebraska pledge Tristan Alvano, the Omaha Westside kicker who committed Friday. Lloyd said he was set to commit to Florida for track and field before Matt Rhule was hired Nov. 26 and immediately offered Lloyd a scholarship.
Nebraska defensive lineman Damian Jackson, the 29-year-old former Navy SEAL, has been selected as the 10th recipient of the Armed Forces Merit Award.
Jackson, who did not play high school football, is in his fifth season with the Huskers and was awarded a scholarship last year.
Tony White is set to be the highest-paid assistant coach ever at Nebraska with his restructured deal that pay him $1.6 million annually.
Why is the timing significant? It's Dec. 1, the first day of off-campus recruiting in this cycle. White will be at Omaha Westside today.
Illinois beats Nebraska 87-84 in OT. A great performance from the Huskers — and they got no help at the end of regulation from officials who called a phantom foul that allowed the Illini to tie it. That’s why it’s hard to win on the road in the Big Ten. Nebraska has yet to do it.
Well, that was the best game at Memorial Stadium since Michigan-Nebraska last year — with a couple of the best players too.
Westside K Tristan Alvano: Offer him two scholarships.
Gretna QB Zane Flores: No need to even say it again. Just atrocity what Nebraska did there.
Purdue QB Aidan O'Connell, who threw for 391 yards against Nebraska, and Illinois RB Chase Brown, who rushed for 180 against Minnesota, share Big Ten offensive POTW honors.
Nothing for Nebraska WR Trey Palmer, whose 237 receiving yards set a single-game school record.
A program-defining day for Will Bolt’s Nebraska baseball team, dispatching NJIT and No. 1 Arkansas in NCAA regional elimination games.
That is Bolt’s team, tough as nails and unfazed by difficult circumstances.
On to Monday and a winner-take-all final against the Hogs.
