some news: today, i’m excited to launch . this ever-expanding black film archive provides history and context to over 200 black films made from 1915 to 1979 currently streaming.
every description on the site is lovingly written & researched by me.
there really is something to write about the tiktokification of everyday life: users are now workers in an assumed reality show feigning for the moment of vitality and the life changing promise of internet stardom
there’s an essay to be written on the ways tumblr — and the quest for the perfectly shareable moment from a film — changed how people engage with cinema as the platform turned 15 this year.
when solange said “i can’t be a singular expression of myself, there’s too many parts, too many spaces, too many manifestations, too many lines, too many curves, too many troubles, too many journeys....” i felt that.
always thinking of the often sampled but under celebrated ann peebles. here, performing her sensational masterpiece “can’t stand the rain”, which she co-wrote.
song for sunday. 💐
i’m tired of self love being framed as a revenge fantasy.
there is no audience to perform for. indulge in the fullness of self love because you deserve it.
“friendship is the place in which a great majority of us have our first glimpse of redemptive love and caring community. learning to love in friendships empowers us in ways that enable us to bring this love to other interactions with family or with romantic bonds.”
—bell hooks
black women filmmakers at UCLA in 1983. founders of the black filmmakers collective (circa 1982) and architects of the l.a. rebellion.
alile sharon larkin, stormé (bright) sweet, melvonna ballenger, and julie dash.
the flamingos’ “i only have eyes for you” simply is one of the greatest songs of all time.
seen here performing it live in 1959.
a song for sunday. 🌹🌹🌹
ronnie spector’s sensibilities and sound changed the world forever. may this icon rest in peace. may we lift her memory up.
her irresistible voice in “be my baby” with the ronettes.
the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was having y’all believe that being pro-black means unconditionally supporting black people who have done terrible things.

“sometimes you don't survive whole. you just survive in parts. but the grandeur of life is that attempt. it's not about that solution.”
— toni morrison in may 2001.
using the internet, generally, requires some level of self delusion to constantly perform; to constantly update & share.
tiktok reframes this performance by promising its undercompensated workers if they create content they can move classes, create trends, move the world, et al
“i realize i don’t know very much. none of us knows very much. but we can all learn more. then we can teach one another. we can stop denying reality or hoping it will go away by magic.”
—octavia butler, “parable of the sower”
some news: on the 1st anniversary of , i’m proud to share that the black film archive —a digital archive providing history and context to black films— is expanding to include black films from the 1980s and focus on global black cinema.
the tumblr asthethicization of film reframes performance, context, and critical discourse to fit the user’s intent through photos and screengrabs and is often an entry point of engaging with movies.
it’s carried over to how film is discussed on twitter & deserves analysis.
“this is precisely the time when artists go to work. there is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. we speak, we write, we do language. that is how civilizations heal.”
— toni morrison
simply the best. rip to the incomparable tina turner, queen of legs, our hearts, and breaking every rule.
the queen of rock 'n roll performing on "soul train" in 1972.
this joni mitchell performance feels like a living eulogy…an artist who knows life on earth is brief so we must savor its sweetness and recognize its bitterness… just gorgeous.
to see some users “make it” and no longer depend on the platform means that tiktok can naturally persuade users to continue making content to “make it” but that illusion is the internet’s version of the lottery effect.
jessie maple— one of the first black woman filmmakers to complete a feature length film— is a giant. her advocacy, mentorship, and care has touched generations of black filmmakers. her passing is a true, deep loss.
Please read the media announcement that the family of Jessie Maple asked that we share. We extend our deepest condolences to the entire family. We're committed and dedicated to honoring her legacy.
