Daughter's teacher calls every parent in the class yesterday. "No concerns. Just checking in to see how things are going on your end and if you have any questions. It's a tough time." Shout-out to all the teachers hustling to make this thing work.
Local man heads to work at 5:30 am and, noticing that his garbage bin has been tipped over, goes to set it back up. “Seems a bit heavy,” he says to himself. That’s probably because the two raccoons were still inside. Apologies to my neighbours for the shriek.
So that’s police in Toronto, Peel, Halton, Ottawa, London, Waterloo, Guelph, Niagara, Kawarthas (and counting) who have said they won’t be randomly stopping people or cars in this stay-at-home order.
Ontario Police now have the authority to require any individual not at home, on the street or in their cars, to provide the reason that they’re out and provide their home address.
“The people getting sick with covid are not wealthy people who can work from home and are probably getting vaccinated. The people who are getting sick are the people who have no choice but to leave their house and expose themselves to the virus at work.”
"In September, a company run by a prominent Ontario developer paid $80 million for two parcels of land that could not be developed. Weeks later, that investment is set to pay off."
In a sentence that would make zero sense a year ago, my parents got vaccinated today at a drive-thru clinic set up in the Legion parking lot. Roll down the window to win.
Today marks 100 years of radio in Canada. My favourite medium which, in its best moments, leaves you frozen in the kitchen or the car, unable to touch the dial. 📻
Teenage daughter: “What? Really? You get to sleep in!”
It’s been a day. Thanks for the kind words.
@metromorning
listeners are the best. Talk to you tomorrow.
At the risk of repeating myself, I don't remember the city being as treacherously icy as it is this winter. Even an easy walk with the dog at night feels like you're taking your life in your hands. What a mess. Walk like a penguin, friends.
Honest question - how is it possible that the platform wasn't created already knowing the vaccines were coming (and that Quebec and Alberta are about to start booking)?
NEW: Ontario's vaccination booking platform will not be launched until March 15, says retired general Rick Hillier. He said the province is "furiously working" on it.

In the Before Time, this was the weekend I was going to take my 16 year old to see NYC for the first time. We had much fun planned. “It’s cool dad. We’ll go when we go and it will still be fun.”
"Can you hear me, Matt? It's nice to see you. Where are you? Vancouver? Montreal?”
Home of the NBA champion Toronto Raptors.
"Fair enough. It's been a while since the Bulls could say that."

Fell into a meditative trance watching a landscaper blow leaves from one side of the fence to the other in a blustery wind. He made zero progress in 5 minutes. The leaf blower is the dumbest invention.
"While the CNE is cancelled, there’s no reason the city can’t make use of the sprawling Exhibition grounds all summer long. Make it a big backyard for people without backyards, with a mix of live music and food vendors."
I’m Michael McCain, CEO of Maple Leaf Foods, and these are personal reflections. I am very angry, and time isn’t making me less angry. A MLF colleague of mine lost his wife and family this week to a needless, irresponsible series of events in Iran...
It’s just after 5:30pm at the mass vaccination site in downtown Toronto. There’s not one person waiting in line. Guy who works here said that most of the ppl 70 and older make their appointments earlier in the day. And there are lulls in the late afternoon and evening.
Some news to share with Here and Now fans: Gill Deacon will be off for the next little while, undergoing treatment for cancer. It's no fun, but this isn't her first rodeo, and she's bound and determined to be back on the air, connecting with listeners, very soon.
Greta Thunberg to Congress: “Please save your praise. We don’t want it. Don’t invite us here to just tell us how inspiring we are without actually doing anything about it because it doesn’t lead to anything."
Last year we had 300+ kids by for Halloween. It’s a lovely social event in the neighbourhood where the kids show off their costumes and scheme for more candy while the parents shout hellos and maybe have a mug of mulled wine and chat. The silence on the block this year sucks.
The genuine way that people are checking in on each other these days is really something. Old friends reconnecting. Colleagues with a quiet email or text. People are looking out for each other. I hope whenever we get through this, that sticks around.
Great news to share: Gill Deacon is coming back! As you may know, Gill was off for the last little while, undergoing treatment for cancer. She's now feeling well and ready to return. You can listen in for her on the show as of next Thursday and we'll be live at TIFF next Friday!
"Theft is bringing street art inside and then charging an admission fee." Someone snuck into the Banksy exhibit and hung their own work on the wall. Love it.
Interesting that the Attorney General Caroline Mulroney was not at the Premier’s side as he said he would invoke the Notwithstanding Clause to push forward a bill that a judge said violated Charter rights. Her thoughts would be welcome (yes, we’re asking for an interview).
Walks into hardware store.
Helpful guy says: ”W hat did you break?”
Me: “Am I that predictable?”
Helpful guy: “It’s a hardware store on a Saturday afternoon. Chances are you broke something. And now you think you can fix it.”
A shoutout to history teachers in the TDSB and elsewhere who have been using this awful moment to make kids curious about the world they’re living in. That was the most interesting dinner table conversation we’ve had in a long while. The kids are alright.
“I don't regret it. It was very precious for me to be there.” Mary Ito moved into a seniors' home to care for her parents. Within days they died, and she too had COVID-19.

bus story: Two women in hijabs sit across from each other. They look at each other. Finally they speak, quietly, shyly. After a few exchanges, tears start to flow and they become very excited, hugging and jumping up and down. >>

And what to my wondering eyes did appear?
But a miniature tractor, clearing and salting the sidewalks of my downtown hood for the first time in the 20 years I’ve lived here.
It sounds like the Indy downtown tonight. If folks are racing motorcycles and cars on city streets like Bloor, Bathurst, Ossington and Davenport in broad daylight, it’s because they don’t fear getting caught.
Sunset is now before 8pm. We will not see it set after 8pm again until late April. We are losing close to 3 minutes of daylight each day, and accelerating. Tonight’s forecast low is 10°. Autumn is closing in.

"It’s time to replace a mass of vague and confusing suggestions with rules that are clear and simple. A mask should be required outside of the home wherever people are in relatively close contact, notably in stores and on public transit."
After criticism that Toronto was lagging far behind many other cities in opening up space for pedestrians and cyclists to get outside safely, the city moves to close some roads to cars, create temporary bike lanes and accelerate the cycling plan. Good.
