Of all losses this last year, this one is especially hard. Ihor’s body was just identified through DNA testing. He was killed on 31 March 2022 evacuating people/providing humanitarian aid to
#Kherson
. The id was difficult bc he was an orphan and a living relative was required.
I’m so excited to announce that I’ll be joining
@Politics_Oxford
and
@NuffieldCollege
next week as a Dept Lecturer in qual research methods and politics! Really looking forward to teaching methods, continuing my research, and working with new colleagues this coming year!
@olgatokariuk
vividly shines light on the reality of many Ukrainians right now, and reminds us that we “must stand with Ukraine, despite the fatigue and the approaching winter.”
A year ago, my friend Igor was buried in Odesa - approx a year after he was killed driving aid to eastern Ukraine. It took months to identify his body.
A mutual friend sent me a photo this weekend. It’s of a time before war destroyed our lives, a time when Igor was still alive.
So neat to see my name on its first book!
Our aim with this edited volume was to show other scholars, especially female ECRs, how challenging, eye-opening, and rewarding fieldwork can be. Huge thanks to
@BASEES
and
@routledgebooks
for supporting this project.
Ihor lived with grace and kindness. He never let his cleft palette and other medical issues affecting his speech and hands limit his abilities. He showed us all what it means to love unconditionally and indiscriminately. Ihor died a hero and will be so missed. Вічна пам’ять.
The events since 24 February have underscored the importance of teaching about
#Ukraine
and geopolitics. I am both thrilled and incredibly grateful I will have the opportunity to do so (officially) from tomorrow as a Dept Lecturer split between

@REESOxford
I study borders. More precisely, I study Ukraine’s borders. As we discuss heightened tensions along the border between Ukraine and Russia, let us please not forget the people living in the borderlands.
3 years ago today, I arrived to an interview with a political figure in Chernihiv, Ukraine. This was me 10 minutes later.
As our news fills with images of the last 12 months of the
#RussiaUkraineWar
, let’s not forget the beauty and spirit of 🇺🇦 and its people.
Today I saw my name cited in someone else’s work for the first time. It was so unexpected that I read the sentence several times before realizing (Howlett, 2021) was me. Academic friends, does this

Today I woke up to a message from my co-author in
#Odesa
: “I am alive, but probably only physically.” There are no words to describe the losses Ukrainians have experienced. As my heart aches for this beautiful city and its people, here are photos of brighter days (Odesa, 2019).
I am so excited to be convening the upcoming

Incredibly humbled (and very surprised) to learn I was nominated by for a
@lsesu
Teaching Award after my first year of teaching in
@LSEIRDept
. The comments moved me to tears. The year was challenging, but I learned so much about teaching both with and from my students.
In 2015 Rory Finnin wrote a checklist of vetting questions for western IR analyses about Russia's war against Ukraine. Still relevant, sadly.
1. Has the author published anything about Ukraine before?
Incredibly humbled to have just learned that I won a Class Teacher Award for my teaching this past academic year in the
@MethodologyLSE
. Sharing my passion for
#qualmethods
with my students, and watching them pursue their own research projects, was truly a highlight of the year.
Three supervisor-PhD student generations connected to
@StAntsCollege
were back at the college earlier this week!
So humbled to have had the opportunity to learn from
@TomilaLankina
and (through her) Archie Brown. I aspire to be such a role model for my own supervisees.
It’s been 10 days since I heard from someone I love defending his country on frontlines of
#UkraineRussiaWar
. His last words were “I’m alive and that’s all that matters.” As the sun shines in Oxford on this first day of spring, I pray the new season brings hope and sunnier days.
An absolutely brilliant and long overdue (by nearly 10 years) piece!
“We urge all scholars to be modest when claiming expertise about subjects, especially in the context of public knowledge- and opinion-formation in the context of political events like war.”
Yesterday, I taught my last class of the year. Time has flown, but the highlight was definitely designing and convening my first 2 courses (Qual Methods in Political Science and Ethnography). I am incredibly grateful to colleagues
@Politics_Oxford
for their ongoing support.
Really excited to see my new piece published in the ‘War in

In Chernihiv, the bodies and the bad memories keep coming. At least 1,300 people died during Russia’s 39-day siege of the city. My report from the city’s main morgue, where the refrigerator trucks were overflowing and bodies had to be piled on stretchers
Spent the last 7 weeks working with these 4 wonderful

Also look out for our forthcoming papers on 🇺🇦 & nation-building!

Today marks two years since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Twenty-four months + 8 years defined by war.
So much has been lost, but Ukrainians continue their fight. Don’t forget them - they need our help more than ever before.

Russia launched a missile attack and nearly three dozen rockets at the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson over the past day, Ukraine's military said. Officials called on residents to evacuate the city as Moscow steps up artillery strikes.

Just found a large collection of photos I took in a small museum in
#Ukraine
while on fieldwork in 2019 and realized my photo library may now be the museum’s digital archive. Aside from the beauty of the art, the pieces eerily resonate with contemp events. I’ll share some here:
Graffiti in Kyiv reminding of us of what should be common sense…
Don’t forget about Ukraine - the country continues to be attacked every. single. day. 🇺🇦
So humbled to have spent the last two days surrounded by brilliant minds working on Ukraine’s resilience, recovery, and reconstruction. Huge thanks to
@SakharovCentre
and especially Robert van Voren for hosting such an inspiring and important conference.
Leaving Brussels energised by too much sugar and incredible conversations about epistemology and knowledge production in the

Please do not let the news around

distract from the ongoing war in

In keeping with a common 🇺🇦 theme in my office, I’m excited to add these important books to my personal library and future reading lists. For anyone interested in learning more about

One of my summer interns shared that he has never been as excited about research as he is about our project. His excitement is contagious and a reminder that our research may be important for reasons we don’t always realise, including inspiring future generations of scholars.

The exhibition "RISE!” is a must see for anyone Oxford-based! Incredibly moving pieces showcasing responses to the war by Ukrainians displaced to the UK. The exhibit is on in Gloucester Green until 30 September.
Really excited to be at

A grey day in Kyiv saying goodbye to another hero taken far too soon. The overflowing cathedral reflects both Maksym Kryvstov’s significant impact on others and the immense pain felt throughout Ukrainian society as this war enters its 10th year.

Honoured to be working with 4 wonderful interns through UNIQ+ and

this summer. Their wit, insight, and attention to detail continues to amaze me - really looking forward to what we’ll accomplish by the end of the programme!
DPIR is delighted to have welcomed a group of talented graduates from under-represented backgrounds for summer internships through the University's UNIQ+ programme!
Our final year student Hana Nabizada has been offered a place in the University of Oxford's UNIQ+ Research Internship summer programme 🥳 Hana is supervised by
@marnie_howlett
(
@Politics_Oxford
), and is researching how young Ukrainians perceive and understand Europe 🇺🇦🇪🇺
After spending 16 days in a place that consistently ‘feels like’ (at its warmest) -30 °C, I am seriously questioning my definition of ‘cold’ and why (and how) cities were built in this climate, but also the sanity of my family and friends who choose to live in such temperatures.
After last year’s successful
@uniqplusoxford
programme, I’m planning to work with another team of young scholars this summer. Please apply/share with anyone interested! 🚨
Favourite moments include:
-students’ surprise when realising 100% of the ethical dilemmas we discussed are my/friends’ stories
-4 students discreetly acting as participant observers during class on participant observation
-students’ excitement following their own qual research
