the KZ protest is NOT homogeneous. There are different groups/players on the ground. Almaty is a burning hub right now, very different from Western KZ. Now in Almaty there's an independent coordination hub that has nothing to do with marauders. Not everyone protesting is a rioter

one thing not many people speak about is the trauma, physical & emotional pain when talking about russian and Soviet coloniality. Our stories, of Tatars, of Sakha, of Kazakhs & everyone who like me, doesn't identify with ethnicity, one place or one culture, are incredibly the same

I think we should've included "mambet" into the vocab of racial slurs & racially charged language along with the "ch" & "h" words in Russian. Let me shortly explain why.

It was so nice to have a bunch of students from Kazakhstan in my methods class this morning. They gave me this and said Happy Republic Day. Yay! Sending hugs and greetings to all compatriots celebrating this historical day today!

Yep and all of us who spent a decade studying and conceptualising it and constantly being told โ€œno one caresโ€ are slightly in awe today. #WelcometoPastan

Central Asians need to write just to claim their subjectivity, to be heard/seen/understood. Too much has been done by constantly conceptualising our existence/knowledge through Russian or Chinese lens.

The situation in #Kazakhstan is COMPLEX. Itโ€™s not black & white, not one scenario or the other (whereโ€™s confirmation?). I urged not to make predictions or spread conspiracy theories since day 1.

Astana was always Astana. Petitions, protests, public discussions against renaming. Kudos to all those who never accepted this crazy authoritarian move and called the city Astana.

ALA - Almaty but also can be Tbilisi. And the comments under this post were like โ€œsure compare Russian IT guys to (uneducated) Tajiksโ€ ๐Ÿ˜–. Just reminding everyone that Russian racism *exists* & is so deeply rooted in some peopleโ€™s perception that they normalize it.

Some of the popular takes are: โ€œSoviet Union civilised you, you wouldnโ€™t have been where you are without Soviet modernisationโ€ or โ€œAll you Westernizersโ€. We are getting gaslighted for just speaking up about our experiences.

But donโ€™t be fooled - this racism was inherent in the Soviet Nationalities Policy both on paper and in practice. How many stories I randomly heard during my interviews when Central Asians remembered being called โ€œblackโ€ in Moscow during the Soviet period.

Iโ€™m writing/giving comments/responding to interviews because I want people to get it right. In all my interviews I always say that Iโ€™m against speculations/predictions/one-sided views. #KazakhstanProtests and events are complex. Embrace this complexity to understand it.

Kazakh Political Artist Askhat Akhmediyarov wrote on his FB that "marauders are the sign of Nazarbayev's agony". Askhat works with econ inequality in KZ as a form of artistic protest. Below is his famous work "Shukr" symbolising the hardship many in KZ live in.

#Zhanaozen has a long and tragic history of labour disputes. Workers continue to work and live in precarious conditions in this town. Oil and gas industry remains the only source of employment.

Why January 2022 protests in Kazakhstan led to mass and unprecedented mobilization? What happened during these first days of protests? Marlene Laruelle and I just published our new piece "Making Sense of the January 2022 protests":

it's important we pay attention to the russian rhetoric against #Kazakhstan . Every concert of artists from russia cancelled thru wide campaigns/petitions so far has been due to these artists openly supporting the colonial wars russia started in Ukraine, Georgia and elsewhere.

Thereโ€™s nothing โ€œnewโ€ about Zhana Kazakhstan. Protestors called for open and contested elections and got detained. Same square in Almaty where almost a year ago hundreds of people protested and more than 200 got killed.

The Kazakh paradox: workers in the richest region of the country have no other job opportunities but working in oil and gas- industry and on incredibly precarious conditions. Protest is their only tool to be heard.

Protest in #Kazakhstan is NOT organised by admin, today was a purely civic engagement. The fact that some protests are "sanctioned" simply means that the city administration formally "allows" these to happen through a bureaucratic procedure of filing a request, then they allocate

And again on the language issue: Russian citizens coming to Central Asia who try to avoid military mobilisation prefer to call themselves โ€œreallocantsโ€. Is it because the term โ€œmigrantโ€ is racialised and discriminated in russia? Take a guess.
