New story: Apple is preparing to allow alternative app stores and side-loading on iOS — along with a slew of other changes to make the iPhone more open — in response to new European Union requirements arriving in 2024.
BREAKING NEWS: Apple cancels the Apple Car project after a decade-long, multi-billion effort to rival Tesla. Some employees shifting to Generative AI teams.
As far as I can tell, there is no way to open a Mac Studio. Which isn’t a surprise as far as RAM or GPU upgrades - we knew Apple would never allow that… but the thermals on this machine are super important and we can’t even clean out the fans every few months 🙃
For sure a calculated move. There is no reason other than meme control for Tim Cook to be standing next to the biggest product of his tenure rather than wearing. In fact, it just looks strange to not be wearing it.
Unless I missed something, it is very curious to me why there are no photos of Tim Cook or other Apple executives actually wearing the Vision Pro. If that is indeed true, that was of course a calculated decision. The question is why?

: Apple stops all product sales in Russia, stops exports to Russia sales channels, is pulling RT News and Sputnik News from App Stores outside of Russia, and is disabling traffic and live incidents in Apple Maps in Ukraine.
The Apple Vision Pro has an additional strap that goes *over* your head (because of weight). It wasn’t discussed, those in the hands on demos had it, but no pictures were allowed. The Good Morning America video didn’t show it either. But one brief scene in the keynote had it.

The AirPower wouldn’t even have made a dent on Apple’s bottom line, but cancelling an announced product, no matter how big or small, is a huge embarrassment. Can’t recall them cancelling an announced device, at least in modern era. Even the white iPhone 4 made it out alive.
I also wonder how Apple landed on 2 hours of battery life and this battery puck size. I wonder if there are diminishing returns at a certain amount of battery capacity - or if Apple will offer a double sized pack for more hours.
Apple is planning for the return of the SD card slot in the upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. This is looking like the “fix everything” edition - with MagSafe also returning and the Touch Bar going away.
I’m not saying the Vision Pro will follow the same trajectory, but the Apple Watch was announced as going on sale in “early 2015” and didn’t arrive until the end of April.
The phone comes with this protective layer/film. Samsung says you are not supposed to remove it. I removed it, not knowing you’re not supposed to (consumers won’t know either). It appeared removable in the left corner, so I took it off. I believe this contributed to the problem.
iPhone Pro detailed: triple back cameras for wide-angle photo/video, on-board AirPods charging, multi-angle Face ID that work flat on a table, improved waterproofing & shatter resistance, new matrix chip, matte backs, more
For those who think the M1 Pro and M1 Max in the MacBook Pro are impressive, the new Mac Pro desktop is expected to come in at least two variations: 2X and 4X the number of CPU and GPU cores as the M1 Max. That’s up to 40 CPU cores and 128 GPU cores on the high-end.
NEW: Apple races to build next-generation, Generative AI features to catch up with OpenAI and Google. The company has developed a framework called “Ajax” to build LLMs and has deployed “Apple GPT” internally. It’s aiming for a consumer product next year.
New story: For new high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, Apple indeed plans return of MagSafe, the end of the Touch Bar (finally), brighter screens, minor design changes, next-gen M-series chips and more. Launch around mid-2021.
Apple trademarked “Dynamic Island” in Jamaica on July 12th. This wasn’t discovered because of a fascinating reason: you can only search for trademarks filed in Jamaica by going physically to the country’s trademark and patent office. The Reality Pro trademarks were global.
NEW: Apple has a secret moonshots team and it’s making significant progress on a major new initiative: no-prick glucose monitoring for the Apple Watch. All of the details, including how Apple has hid its work behind a fake startup, here:
The “X” app update on iOS is so haphazardly done - with Twitter and Tweet still referenced throughout and essentially changed no where other than on the top of the timeline and on the icon. It probably would’ve taken an hour to make all of the changes.
BREAKING NEWS: Apple and Google are in discussions for Gemini to power Generative AI features coming to the iPhone with iOS 18 this year. Apple also recently held talks with OpenAI on a deal.
Vision Pro developer kits are now available: “Please note this is an Apple-owned development device. The kit will need to stay at its ship-to address in a private, secure workspace accessible only by you and your authorized developers. You’ll have regular check-ins with Apple and…
The iPhone 15 ships with a bug that prevents iPhone to iPhone data transfer at setup. The 15 needs to be updated to iOS 17.0.2 in order for the transfer to work. To update it, plug the phone into a computer over the cable, download iOS 17.0.2 and install it — then set it up.
So far the only new bits revealed about the Vision Pro today:
- 256GB of storage
- $99 (Reading) and $150 (General) for the Zeiss prescription inserts
- Comes with both the normal and top band
- Comes with the front cover and Polishing Cloth ($19 value, yours absolutely free).
“iPhone 14” and “iPhone 15” sound like reasonable names, but when you start getting to “iPhone 16,” “iPhone 17,” “iPhone 18,” it starts to sound odd. At least to me. Numbers need to go at some point.
In an unprecedented development, Apple will halt Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 sales in the US after an ITC ruling about Apple violating Masimo blood oxygen patents was not reversed.
New story: iPhone 12 will be released weeks after typical mid-September launch, will have an iPad Pro-like design, 5G, and LIDAR + Smaller HomePod in the works and Apple Tags will come in leather keychain pouch. With

NEW: Apple readies the iPhone 15 Pro as a major step towards its dream phone, with 1.5mm ultra-thin bezels, USB-C, titanium band, major camera upgrades, softer corners, new chips, a customizable side button and more.
I don’t find really ProMotion, LiDAR, an extra camera, Face ID, and 0.3-inches of extra screen worth an extra $200. Especially when I think Touch ID in the power button is going to be sweet + the blue color option is very cool. The new iPad Pro in 2021 needs to be a leap.
Those who expected major changes to the Dynamic Island in iOS 17 were spot on: The alarm clock now is in the island instead of a normal notification banner.
USB-C is coming to the second-generation AirPods Pro, Apple confirms. It’s also coming to EarPods. Apple is touting USB-C as an upgrade with compatibility with iPad and Mac chargers. Obviously no mention they were forced to do this.
Apple should discontinue the iPad Air. I don’t believe many consumers would find a $150 upgrade worthwhile for just the M1 versus the A14. If you feel like you *need* the M1, you’re probably going for a Pro anyways.
Antonio García Martínez, a newly hired engineer on Apple’s ads team, is gone from Apple after employee backlash regarding sexist comments he made in his book Chaos Monkeys, company says. Employees have been incredibly angry about his hire and questioned Apple’s hiring practices.
Apple’s war on all things leather is expanding to its retail stores. The company will phase out leather try-on mats for Apple Watches and leather cube seats.
New orders of the Apple Polishing Cloth are now delayed until late November. The high-powered processor and intricate design makes this cloth another casualty of the chip shortage.
Netflix co-CEO on lack of a Vision Pro app:
"We have to be careful about making sure that we're not investing in places that are not really yielding a return, and I would say we'll see where things go with Vision Pro.”
Not unchecking a box to enable their iPad app is a huge…
I wouldn’t get too excited about rumors of new Apple products appearing this week. More likely I think: an announcement of the upcoming (of course virtual) September iPhone/Apple Watch event.
New story: Apple has begun early work on foldable iPhone screens to rival Samsung. The next-gen iPhone is an “S” year model with an in-screen fingerprint scanner in testing. Also coming: new iPad Pro with MiniLED and thinner/lighter entry-level iPad.
NEW: Apple says RCS is coming to iOS in ’24: “We believe RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users.”
Some users appear to be seeing a new Clownfish wallpaper in iOS 16 beta 3. This is the wallpaper Steve Jobs used when the original iPhone was announced in 2007 — but it never actually ever shipped with any iPhone. Here we are 15 years later.
Now we know how Apple convinced Amazon to finally put Prime Video on the App Store in 2017: Apple agreed to only take 15% of revenue from Prime Video subscriptions made on iOS, versus the 30% they were taking from others.
In addition to not getting the landscape camera, the iPad Pro doesn’t get the new Magic Keyboard from the base iPad. The new keyboard has a function row and an updated design. The new entry iPad gets USB-C, but only supports the Apple Pencil with Lightning. Odd across the board.
This Apple Store has put a new cabinet on its showroom floor related to the Vision Pro quite a bit early. This is for storing items related to the demos.
When I tap the screen as well with the top of my finger and the fingernail hits it (very common), it also leaves a seemingly permanent indent. Samsung is going to send a replacement and I’ll share updates.
NEW: Apple’s iPhone and Watch product design chief is heading to Jony Ive’s LoveFrom to run hardware engineering for new AI devices company with OpenAI’s Sam Altman.
New story: Apple plans first iMac redesign in nearly a decade with new look reminiscent of the Pro Display XDR. Also coming: Intel Mac Pro refresh, a new half-sized Apple Silicon Mac Pro (a modern day PowerMac G4 Cube), and a cheaper standalone monitor.
