"Mae's Book on Colours" is finally ready.
It's a beauty to behold, and probably one of the most useful colour resource you'd find to help you navigate making badass colour choices one project after another.
Today is the soft launch.
Some people we look up to actually stumbled on the success we aspire to achieve.
I fear we may be so obsessed with their paths that we want to recreate it so forcefully.
I absolutely adore my faves. But I love my path!
How are you making sense your own path and patterns?
I enjoy discovering amazing designs, so I just simply curated a couple of them (about 97) and repurposed them to fit thoughts or words that I found interesting.
Thinking of making a thread of my random thoughts on colour (and colour psychology in branding) that we rarely talk about.
No, it won't be about the regular "red means hot sauce of passion" and all that. Nah.
You've either read enough of that or can go find it yourself.
Last year, I really had fun.
Moved through Art Direction, Brand Design, Brand Strategy and Art (Mural).
Def taking these a notch higher this year. I love loveeeeeeet.
Happy new year from The Afọlábís
May your hands be strengthened to fulfill the desires in your heart.
One month with Olúwatóní Anthony. They really don't craft actual words for this delightful awe.
COLOURS OF NIGERIA IS HERE!!!
I’m learning so much about places I’ve never been to, foods I’ve never eaten and it’s been so intriguing so far.
The colours are named by the source of inspiration, tweaked in some cases so that we have a wide enough variety of tones.
I've found two things to be an all-time cure for imposter syndrome:
Competence x Courage to learn/try new things.
Also, tracking your growth by going through past works can be encouraging.
You pour into someone enough that it overflows.
So much that the person's overflow fills another, to the overflow. And that flows on and on, to overflow into someone else.
And you never stop flowing.
This is greatness, for me.
@UMEHoma
@ibironketweets
I have learnt to remind myself that dancing is some people's superpower like design is for me.
I cannot comman kee myself with hypertension😅
As a brand designer, you're onboarded into the visual system of a brand and meet a vibrant and expressive/boundless colour system.
How do you manage that?
Speaking on this on Sunday night and it promises to be fun.
Very.
An illuminating too.
Traveled back to Ife to speak with student designers, strategists, small business owners and design enthusiasts about corporate branding and what I found most interesting was how attentive, hungry and ready to work they were.
Told
@Ayoolafelix
that I almost envied them. Haha.
Yesterday, I had a carryover of weekend stress.
I knew how productive the day had to be, and decided to hack it with colour.
The energy from the yellow gave me the much needed oomph.
Yes, colour is that powerful!
Design is a looooooooot more than the software and technical skills.
Add negotiations and communication to the other "not so simple things" you come up with (or find out).
No, it doesn't mean you should downplay technical skills.
If you’re a creative person who works with colours and needs to understand it more, work better with it; I wrote Mae’s Book on Colours for you.
It starts with some rich colour insights (from design to photography) and then a workbook area...👇🏾
I'm excitedly looking forward to pouring out so much into these guys in the coming months:
Aaaaand I've learnt over time that pouring out is mostly listening to the unsung rhythms of people, and helping them make that music (design).
Oyaaaaaaa!

BLACK (or WHITE) IS NOT YOUR AUTHENTIC COLOUR.
And that’s okay.
Generally, when people are trying to figure out the colour to wear (or use) for an occasion, they start from black or white.
It almost never fails.
I was on this slide when my madam started crying.
Dre was out for a few, and I had to pause my session for a few minutes to attend to her.
My audience were gracious.
These kids really don’t care. Na them be my real employers.
🤣
In all of this Aimoye Amoy saga;
I need you to pay a little bit more attention to how powerful colour is in branding.
Once you see the bottle shape, the logo colour (not even the spelling) becomes enough to make us pick products off the shelf…
Oh wow.
@DREafolabi
We're finally doing this!
I feel excited to share this also with y'all.

Today at BCP Origins.
Colour is so powerful; we all interact with and make decisions based on colour from our waking moments.
🫵🏾
You interact with colour way too much for you to “just wing it”.
This is what I look like without my glasses (sideview).
If you wear glasses like me, you know that people can almost struggle with recognizing you without it.
I'm curious to see what people look like without their glasses 😀

COLOURS OF NIGERIA IS OUT TOMORROW.
In my years of working with colours (for African businesses and beyond), I made an interesting discovery:
African colours are mostly defined by their intensity.

Looking forward to going to Ife on Friday. There's so much to share and I'm so excited for the good work the team's put into setting it up.
Can't wait for nostalgia to hit as I make the trip. If you're in Ife and you can make the time, come through!

Stepped out during my time at Lagos Meet for a quick meeting that called for another.
I know I saw one more person pacing around to take a meeting.
That’s the new normal.
(I read the dangerous things that you people do during virtual meetings and I’m still amazed).
Happy Birthday, Similólúwa-Simone!
So honored to be your mom, babe.
Wow.
@DREafolabi
has been painting your Royal Gorgeousness all day. So beautiful, colourful.
Your smile brighten up even the shadows, Simama!
There's a biiig difference between knowing about design (having read from so many blogs, books, trainings and whatnot) aaand actually understanding design (having practiced and paid attention to details over time).
Every Colour is taken: A Case-Study.
(A surefire way to create interesting colour palettes is to start from essence as you'd see.)
We had begun the identity design with an agreement on possible colours; till we found out we could do better.

I’m trying to create a mini FREE Colour Palette Book, inspired by a tweet from
@jobosonchisa
, where he asked about African Colours.
But before it becomes a book, I’ll share here.
I’ve created for 6 States in Nigeria. I’ll be sharing over this weekend.

You know someone's online persona and pictures but nothing prepares you for what they look like in real life.
What it's like to hear their laughter. How they roll their eyes and other unique gestures they have.
Whether they're super tall or how extremely stunning they are.
What I've found over time is that you understand client communication more by experience...
The more you enter conversations with them, the better you get at it.
Every client is different, however, one thing is important: they need your skill.
Let me quickly say this. This book is super resourceful.
And a fast read too.
Fast and super resourceful to help you turn into a pro as you use it over and over.
💪🏾
