I'm so excited to say that the most controversial festival of ancient Rome, the LUPERCALIA, will finally have a BOOK-length study! After very positive peer reviews I did some minor revisions and just submitted the final version of the manuscript.

Just survived the terrorist attack on my Faculty at Charles University. I was teaching in the building where and when it happened. Still in shock but can say this was the most dramatic Ovid class ever! Glad all my students got out safe.

But there is oral literacy surprisingly more accurate than written accounts. Complex techniques such as rhythmic patterns (metre), body movements, and singing helped the Brahmins to record their text faithfully, with very few mistakes. So when thinking 'West' remember the East!

@Colonus_ @MetalClassicist Greek and Roman mythology. Usually offered as options and taught piecemeal. I've seen a lot of student blank at things that we take for granted, e.g. house of Atreus (ties in with what others said re Iliad) or family relations such as Pasiphae and Phaedra.

No, ⁦⁦ @VP ⁩ Harris, there hasn’t been 70 years of peace and security in Europe. We had a bloody war at the breakup of Yugoslavia 1991-95 and Russia invaded parts of Ukraine in 2014. Forgetting history is what gets us back to bloodshed.

I really enjoyed teaching Japanese students mythology at a summer school in Oxford. They gave me several gifts but my fave is this slender piece of photoshop. It was so nice to be back teaching in person and having real discussions in class after a long time!

I love reading Oscan inscriptions. @thesaurosaur has pointed me to the testament of Vibius Adiranus in Pompeii. It mentions one "isidum". This is a reference to Isildur, which dates it to the end of the Second Age and makes Isildur's defeat of Sauron terminus ante quem.

The oldest book I have is a bit older than the United States :) It's an edition of one of the few extant ancient novels, Heliodorus' Aithiopica, from 1772. Not in perfect shape but it looks great for its age and still legible.

Ides of March and everyone's on about Caesar but today is also the festival of Anna Perenna, the goddess of the renewal of the year. Her sacred spring was situated in a grove next to the Tiber where people drank and had sex in celebration of the goddess (left on this coin)

The small village of Bobovišća on Brač is simply beautiful. Croatian poet Vladimir Nazor came here often to think, rest and write his verse. In 1942 Nazor (age 66) joined the antifascist resistance. Story has it that he fell in love with another male poet, 35 years younger...
