📣 Dear Friends: I've decided to leave academia. It wasn't an easy decision, but it's the right one for me and my family. Moving to Cologne was a fantastic personal decision, but professionally, it didn't align with my goals. Sometimes, the path we choose isn't the one we expect.
I am excited to announce that our workshop, "Evolving Microbial Communities", will take place at the
@MPI_EvolBio
at the end of April 2020. The workshop is organised by Andy Farr and me with the invaluable help of
@RaineyLab
. Please RT😀and register here:
We have a new preprint with

and
@RaineyLab
. If you are interested in barcoding a microbial species, have a look at our adventure to barcode P.fluorescens SBW25.
🚨Applications for 2022 summer meetings on Microbial Communities/Microbial Evolution are closing in a month.🚨 We are looking forward to receiving your application! Dear Twitter friends, please RT and spread the word! Apply here -
Together with Kristian Ullrich, we have written a small R package for colour palettes. It is helping us save some time when we choose colours for our ggplots. We hope that you find it useful as well.
One thing I love about
#RStats
is the inclusiveness, transparency, and will to teach everyone programming and data visualization. It comes to me as a huge surprise when people ask you 1500$ to teach you how to build a shinyapp when this book is free online
Working for the last 5 years with DNA barcoded sequences, I always needed an R-package that simulates DNA barcode sequences to have complete control while testing our pipelines and software. For this, I made BarcoSim.
I am excited to announce two in person workshop meetings for Summer 2022. The workshops are organised by
@TanushJagdish
,
@fatiaysh
,

🌟 Our new package, e-Leven, allows us to calculate and plot Levenshtein distances among DNA sequences, enabling us to explore and compare genetic variations efficiently and accurately. Part of it is the function colorDNAseq: for colouring DNAseqs.
In hindsight, staying in Plön or joining one of favorite labs in the US might have been different paths. But every decision is a learning opportunity.

I made an infographic explaining the effect of an abiotic stressor onto the eco-evolutionary dynamics of a predator-prey system.
10 years have passed since the time I was in Munich. During these years, we have changed several countries and cities. Looking forward to see familiar and new faces!

from the MPI Plön. We will hear about the genomic characterization of biodiversity in Pseudomonas fluorescens SBW25. When? Jan 25th at 14:00 CET. If you want to join the seminar via zoom please dm.
I'm not stepping away from science. I'm committed to completing all pending academic work. Excited to share more barcode research and mathematical models in the coming year!
I've had the privilege of working with many incredible people in academia. While I can't name everyone here, your impact has been profound and appreciated.
We are excited to announce a workshop on the "Mathematical modelling of microbiomes" at
@MPI_EvolBio
!!! 📉💻🦠 We would like to welcome you in beautiful Plön from the 14th to 16th of September 2022. Application deadline is July 1st. (1/3)
Dear micro evo friends,
There is an update related to Pseudomonas fluorescens SBW25 genome. We used PACBIO with an immense coverage of ~600x and Illumina to reassemble SBW25. Might seem small, but it was a huge effort driven from Carsten

A heartfelt thank you to my supervisors: Paul Rainey, Dieter Ebert, Thomas Lenormmad, Christoph Haag, and Lutz Becks. Your guidance has been invaluable.
To not give the impression that everything goes super smoothly and there is only success, this is how a rejection letter for a grant sounds. At least I could go home earlier and play music ☺️☺️
My last talk before I leave Plön will be about my second child, "barbac". An R package to extract, cluster and quantify DNA barcode sequences. Cluster with any algorithm you like, calculate stats and beautiful graphs during the process
Dear tweeps soon to be blskyers,
In collaboration with Kristian Ullrich, I'd like to present SNPless, a Nextflow pipeline developed for time series analysis of microbial genomics data 🧬.
Give us a ⭐️ if you find useful and to stay updated!
Tim is an amazing person and scientist. Tim cares for his students and offers a stimulating environment in a high profile university. The PhD position that offers is an amazing opportunity😃😃 and Dresden is super beautiful. Please retweet :)
Dear tweeps soon-to-be blooskies, We have an updated version of our ltc package, which contains, among other enhancements, colour palettes based on the life and art of Pablo Picasso! Find it here … And feel free to give us a star or feedback!

Martin was not only a great scientist but also a great person. We passed together the Christmas of 2015 in the lab. He supported me like few people so far. He was genuine and generous. He was a giant.

One of the biggest mysteries in Daphnia world and evolutionary biology is almost solved. This paper, published by previous supervisor Christoph Haag, sheds light on the genetic basis of the Non-Male Producing (NMP) phenotype in Daphnia sp. High-quality-sci

I was always so keen to understand the core of the controversy between Fisher and Wright. I am so happy that I read the chapter from Steven A. Frank . To motivate you to have a look at it I made this infographic.
We have received an unbelievable amount of applications, and we'll need a few more days to reach the final decision. By the end of next week, you'll hear back from us.
The high quality of the applications has made the selection process a very tough job, which is great 😀😀.
It was a pleasure listening

talking about microbial communities. Thank you, Christoph, for the fascinating talk, and we hope to see you soon!

This work is fascinating as it starkly illustrates that it's not just the pairwise interactions elucidating why species coexist, but rather the intricate network of interactions!!!

Thank you so much, Harmit, for everything! It was an absolute pleasure and honour interacting with you. We all hope that our paths will cross soon again!
That's a very cool and well-written paper by Puebla lab. It sheds light on the speciation of the Hamlets. All data is presented so neatly and is well analyzed.
