Raising the minimum salary for a skilled foreign worker from £26,200 to over £35,000 means no junior doctors, nurses, allied health professionals. This is definitely not going to work.

@liambarker God forbid that we actually put some investment into training more people in the U.K. I am not sure why ripping off the healthcare systems of poorer countries is seen as such a big win.

@RubiRubenstein It’s not a big win. It’s necessary in the current climate seeing as there’s no desire to retain existing staff.

@Adrian_Harrop It’s just sound bites. We know this current government is completely inept and doesn’t have a handle on anything

@liambarker Over half of GP trainees are IMG, right? Many currently on these visas. We are going to have no medical staff imminently.

@rosi_marsh I think their plan just reeks of desperation. They know they are out at the next election

@oafcwould But they won’t be able to bring their dependents, so it’s not exactly an attractive option…

It’s ok everyone, health and social care is going to be exempt- just as long as you are happy to leave your family behind 🤷🏻‍♂️

@liambarker You could add in all international post-doc researchers and new lecturers in universities to that list

@WoyWoyPom I reckon I could have added a plethora of really skilled jobs that are paid peanuts in this country. I’m biased and stuck to healthcare

@Craig_Hearne @liambarker Yes. Hence my agreement that staff retention needs to be addressed

@liambarker This Govt doesn’t want to provide health & social care for its people. Guess as many elderly people as they had hoped for didn’t die despite of their careless policies during COVID. They see elderly & disabled just as a “cost” to tax payer, but will turn blind eye to tax avoiders

@liambarker Does it? They can start st1 and join f2 standalone, just not f1? (Which is what they should without NHS experience but anyway)

@liambarker They will have to add exemptions for any jobs where there is currently a shortage. So the policy won't actually do that much to reduce numbers. It's more smoke and mirrors rubbish.

@scotEMT @liambarker Remind me, how long does it take to become a fully qualified doctor or nurse? It’s a pity that serious illness won’t wait while we train our own. We should have increased the number of university places for them many years ago.
