We dedicated our 2 Emmys for “Battle for Jerusalem” to Aljazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh who was killed on May 11 after being shot in the head by Israeli forces, while doing her job. Shireen’s family is still fighting for justice & accountability. Journalism is NOT a crime.
This is so disgusting and racist
@CNN
. They're talking about my 63-year old mother who lost over 200 members of her family in Gaza. She visited the encampment for 20 minutes and ate some hummus.
Gaza has officially gone dark. No internet or phone lines anymore. People can’t reach each other, or reach the outside world. And even the local radio stations have been allegedly overtaken by Israeli forces sending out warnings to ppl of Gaza. Gaza is being heavily bombarded
Officials in Gaza have m said they’re not able to keep track of death count anymore. Some areas have been out of reach. There’s no real functional hospital. Limited to no emergency services. People dead under the rubble.
Doctors at Al Shifa hospital are giving a press conference to counter the Israeli claims that Hamas’ headquarters is located under the hospital. They’re urging the international community to protect the hospital and the hundreds of patients currently there.
My mother found out that more than 200 people in her extended family have been killed in Gaza.She was previously told it was 24. This raises questions about the actual death toll in Gaza given that there’s no real way to keep track. Palestinians are in a state of constant grief
It feels dumb to write about this during ongoing death in Gaza but I got laid off from
@VICENews
today. Along with all of my Arab colleagues— & a lot of other amazing journos. Sad to see such an important platform dissolve. Especially now when representation in media rly matters
I don’t think we talk about this enough but people in Gaza are starving and dehydrated. It’s been over two months since Israel imposed a full siege on 2.3 million oeople.
Doctors in
#Gaza
have just held a press conference warning that hospitals are about to collapse. Overwhelmed from the amount of injured/dead. Not enough fuel to keep them running. Supplies running out. No way to get anything into Gaza right now bc of Israel’s ‘complete siege’
Aljazeera reporter: the situation is catastrophic. We can’t even communicate with the outside world to tell them what’s going on… please tell the world we are isolated now in Gaza. We are isolated in the territory
Just found out eleven members of my mom’s extended family have been killed in an Israeli air strike on
#Gaza
, including three children. There was a two month old named Zein-addin ❤️🩹💔
Hi
@Columbia
I won a DuPont award in 2022– an accolade from your journalism department that celebrates capturing and reporting historical moments and investigations. But today I’m being denied access to Columbia University’s campus to report on the student movement. Let press in
Remembering Shireen Abu Akleh today— a Palestinian woman and journalist shot by an Israeli soldier while doing her job. Her family is still searching for justice and accountability.
Today, under the olive trees in Khiyam South Lebanon we buried our beloved friend & colleague Issam Abdallah— killed by an Israeli strike while doing his job. Our community will never fully recover. There will likely be no accountability or justice for his death. 💔 We love you
Rest in Power Reuters cameraman and journalist, Issam Abdullah, killed in the last hour by Israeli bombing in the south of Lebanon. He was surrounded by cameras & other journalists, wearing press vests, who have also been injured. Is this Israeli self-defence too?!
Al Jazeera English correspondent in Gaza Tareq Abu Azzum just reported that his colleague cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa has passed away after being shelled by Israeli forces. Israel then prevented ambulances from reaching him. Samer bled out for almost six hours.
People in Gaza are cut off from communicating with each other and the outside world right now. But the few accounts who’ve been able to get word out say it’s the worst night of shelling they’ve experienced.
It’s been 15 months since the killing of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Our team at VICE was reporting in Jenin just a couple of weeks before Shireen was killed, & we caught a high ranking IDF commander on hot mic entertaining the idea of facilitating us getting shot accidentally.
lol today I found myself translating an Arabic interview for 7 different journalists at a press scrum. That’s because 7 different news organizations didn’t bother sending a goddamn Arabic speaker to the Middle East. We need to decolonize the media. The system is broken.
Hi
@youtube
why did you age restrict our film investigating the death of a Palestinian protester at the Al Aqsa Compound. We have followed all guidelines and don’t show any deceased person etc. At this point it feels targeted and deliberate.
Police have broken into Hamilton Hall at Columbia University to arrest students inside who’ve taken it over last night in order to pressure the university to divest
Students at Columbia University have occupied Hamilton hall. Today the university president explicitly said to students the school would not be divesting and threatened to suspend students protesting. The last time this building was taken over by student protesters was in 1968
Reminder: Shireen Abu Akleh was shot in the face while doing her job. She was a Palestinian Christian. Then her funeral procession across Jerusalem was attacked. The pallbearers were beaten walking through Jerusalem and her coffin was almost dropped, all on live television.
Lots of reporters of color who tell me they’re completely demoralized by newsrooms treating them suspiciously, questioning their allegiances, or removing them from specific stories. Instead of leaning on our expertise, contacts & language skills, we’re being sidelined & silenced.
According to the
#UN
there are now more than 17,000 Palestinians displaced by Israeli airstrikes sheltering in 41 different UNRWA schools in
#Gaza
. This is collective punishment.
Israelis are slut-shaming this unidentified Palestinian woman who likes to wear lingerie. So feeling sexy is now akin to being a degenerate pervert? Or is it because she's Muslim and therefore not permitted to enjoy herself?
6 months ago our friend & colleague Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah was brutally killed by the Israeli military. Over 6 investigations found that the journalists were directly targeted. It’s been 6 months since we lost him & six months of impunity. I miss your laugh the most 💔
Shocked & horrified at the news of Israel killing Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. We grew up with her always in our home on Aljazeera. She was shot in the head by Israeli forces while on assignment in the city of Jenin. Journalism is NOT a crime!
An entire female high school volleyball team gone in 80 seconds, a father looks for his son in a field hospital. He knows he won’t find him. 2 Toddlers moving under rubble but an uncle is unable to get to them. He watches them wave their hands for 2 days until they stopped moving
Happening now at Columbia University: students have taken over Hamilton building. It’s the same building the anti war student movement took over in 1968.
Gaza’s main phone and internet provider says lines have been completely cut off again. Gaza has once again plunged into darkness— no communication with the outside world while it gets bombed from the skies.
Another excruciating story from Gaza: Two doctors, Muhammad Al-Ran, Head of the Surgery Department at the Indonesian Hospital & Dr. Muayyad Al-Ran received news that their house was hit with an airstrike & their family members were killed while they were at work a short while ago
Currently in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan, where hundreds of Palestinian families are under threat of either being forced from their homes or having their homes demolished. Just now Israeli govt showed up with bulldozer to demolish one of the Odeh family homes.
My brother attended a talk by a journalist who just fled
#Gaza
. She said no one in Gaza would rent her family an apartment after fleeing South because everyone knows journalists have a target on their back by the IDF
Since there’s no real mainstream international reporting in
#Gaza
, will share some things from Arabic: A doctor at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, while working and rescuing the injured, was surprised to find her husband among the dead.
Our documentary from Sheikh Jarrah for
@VICENews
is out. We spent a few weeks speaking to Palestinian families being forcibly evicted from their homes, and the Israeli settlers leading the effort.
Wow
@NYCMayor
is spreading misinformation in the service of fear-mongering on
@npr
without any challenge from the host. My mother is not an “outside agitator.” She is a 63-year old retired teacher who stopped by to bear witness for 20 mins. What a sham.
I’ve heard privately from a lot of western colleagues that even tweeting about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza could make them unemployable, so that’s why they’ve been silent.
Israel is now saying they intentionally assassinated Hamza al Dahdouh, alleging that the Palestinian journalist and son of Gaza's Al-Jazeera Bureau chief Wael al Dahdouh is a terrorist and a member of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
This is absolutely farcical.
Shireen Abu Akleh was killed 6 months ago by Israeli forces. Since then Israel denied they did it. Then they said “well they she was armed with a 📸.” Then US said they couldn’t come to any conclusive evidence. Then Israel admits to killing her. There’s been Zero accountability.
@VICENews
With everything happening in Israel & Palestine I wanted to share some of our work: We investigated the death of Walid al Sharif, a Palestinian protester who died after injuries at Al Aqsa. Israel denied responsibility but we proved police killed him:
Humbled and honored to win 3 Emmy awards this year; two were given to our film “Inside the Battle for Jerusalem,” about the forced expulsion of Palestinians from Sheikh Jarrah, & also one for our film “The Shockwave,” about doctors at Saint George moments after the Beirut blast
Journalist Wael Al Dahdouh says goodbye to his son Hamza (also a journalist) who was killed in an Israeli strike on his car. Wael has already buried his wife, daughter, son & grandchild killed by Israel. He’s also had to bury his colleague Samer. How many times can a heart break
36 journalists killed by Israel since October 7. 💔 including one of my close friends, Issam Abdallah. 36 journalists, who are all Arab. There’s been a notable silence from our colleagues.
#BREAKING
| "This is the truth that the occupation state wants to hide from the world. These are the military targets that the occupation state is bombarding in
#Gaza
. These are the command centers in Gaza's hospitals."
The spokesman for the Gov't Media Office holds…
I read this earlier and it broke me 💔: My fiancé wore a shroud instead of a wedding dress. I’ve been deprived from the happiest times of my life. Goodbye, my soul.
One month ago our dear friend Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah was killed by an Israeli strike. An investigation by RSF found that Israel had launched a targeted attack against him the group of other journos reporting with AFP & Aljazeera. Today they hit more journalists.
Earlier today IDF released what seemed like an AI generated infographic claiming that Hamas HQ was under the hospital. Their elaborate media packet included an alleged convo with Hamas ppl and different infographics and a model of the hospital. Doctors in Gaza say this is a lie
Everyday feels much heavier than the last. Shock is shifting to immense pain & grief. For 72 hours there were entire villages of people alive under rubble, now it’s highly unlikely those who are missing will be found. But today rescuers found a 3 month baby alive after 104 hours.
Today we got to meet the beautiful Syrian baby girl that was born under the rubble. The doctors in Syria treating her and others say they need help. There’s thousands of children who don’t have any safe place to live
We’ve made it into
#Alaqsamosque
and it feels like a war zone in here. Injured people, men and women barricaded in. Tear gas, rubber bullets, and stun grenades everywhere. The itself is mosque a mess and burns my throat and eyes when I entered.
Thinking of these children we met in Gaza in 2021. They still managed to make us laugh just hours after surviving a brutal war. Wondering what’s become of them now.
‼️ journalists covering this conflict: I hope your first order of business is to demand access into Gaza once the ceasefire starts, outside of IDF embeds.
Biden admin was concerned a pause in Israeli bombardment would open Gaza up to more journalists to cover Israeli crimes & “turn public opinion”.
Read that again. They strategized how to subvert coverage using Palestinian lives. Then consider how Israel has killed 49 journalists.
In 2022 the Pulitzer Prize was awarded to Ukrainian journalists covering an illegal occupation of their country.I wonder if journalists in Gaza(who’ve been working under the worst conditions possible) & killed at the highest rates ever documented will be given the same treatment?
In 2021 we traveled to Jerusalem and embedded in the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, with Palestinians fighting forcible eviction from their homes. And we speak to the settler from NY living in part of their home:
.
@Columbia
is only allowing a specified list of English language legacy media to report and that’s it. That is NOT free press. Notice how Aljazeera and others are not on here.

Aljazeera broadcasting live footage of Israel dropping fliers over Gaza city demanding the evacuation of 1.1 million people. People I’ve spoke to in Gaza have said this is another nakba
My latest for the NYT. My friend Issam was one of over 60 journalists killed by Israeli strikes since Oct 7. CPJ says it’s the deadliest conflict for reporters since they started taking record 3 decades ago. I wish I didn’t have to write this piece.
"It's very unlikely that there will be any accountability."
Journalist
@lalarian
remembers her friend Issam Abdallah, the Reuters videographer killed last week in a presumed Israeli strike along the Lebanon border that also injured six others, all of them marked as press.
We should never have to see a grandfather cry. Abu Turkey says he’s lost his children and grandchildren, who are still stuck under the rubble. 💔 He is 90 years old. Antakya Feb 13 2023.
Today we crossed into opposition held Syria via Turkey. Those who were injured & those who lost everything tell us they knew no one would come for them. Not a single international rescuee team crossed the over to help dig up the living. They say they urgently need help.
Our industry hasn’t condemned enough the killing of over 130 journalists in Gaza & Lebanon. Instead tonight they’re schmoozing with officials from US govt who are providing Israel with weapons killing media workers in targeted attacks, like my friend Issam Abdallah.
Sheikh Jarrah isn't the only neighborhood where Palestinians are facing forcible eviction from their homes. We also did a piece about the Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan-- where they're trying to remove Palestinians & replace them with Jewish Israelis
A doctor from inside Al Shifa hospital has reported horrible shelling around the area outside the hospital and says Israeli forces are using white phosphorus. He pans the camera to show all of the injured people.
After burying my friend Issam in Lebanon I had this reoccurring dream that he’d appear in a field & ask me to bring him back to life. I’d run around looking for a doc. When one agreed I was overjoyed. Then I remembered his body had exploded, & there was no way to resuscitate him
The entire neighborhood of Palestinians have gathered on their balconies to watch their neighbors home get demolished. Tens of families were given the same demolition order by the Israeli government. The UN considers this area occupied under international law.
Sources say
#Israel
is about to bomb another high rise media building— the offices which house Aljazeera, BBC, the AP. Apparently some journalists refusing to leave
From my friend whose family lives in
#Gaza
: It’s very bad and escalating by the minute. They are starting to target block apartment buildings with 50+ apartments. They strike with light missiles then the bombers come back and level them. My parents live in one that’s a candidate
The protesters have renamed Hamilton hall Hind’s hall— after five year old Hind Rajab who was killed by Israeli forces after being trapped in a car for twelve days.
Yesterday for about three seconds I thought I saw my friend Issam Abdallah on the street in Beirut while I was walking. Then I remembered the IDF killed him for being a journalist.
@VICENews
In April, we traveled to the Occupied West Bank and did a piece about settlement expansion. We speak to some settlers. Ben Gvir too . & ex Israeli PM Naftali Bennet:
