director: Doctor Who: Wild Blue Yonder | Ghosts 1&2 | Stath Lets Flats 1&2 | This is Going to Hurt | Gregg Wallace: The British Miracle Meat // 🏳️🌈 he/him
If you watched the final episode of This is Going to Hurt, then A) thank you, and B) here is a 🧵 of more behind the scenes facts:
1/17 - Our fake hospital was built in a former art college in Whitechapel. When we filmed the last scene, nearly all the set had been demolished:
The cheapest special effect in the episode was a moment where the baddies appear to be getting taller. The technique just involved... standing on a box. No one believed it’d work until we did this test

Merry Christmas 🥲! Thanks for watching the
#Ghosts
Xmas Special on BBC One. Here’s a behind the scenes thread. First, recording the first version of the carol back in January.
@WixKaty
arrived for the rehearsal saying “has anyone heard about this virus in China?” 1/13
#BBCghosts
Just about to start filming on Ghosts series 2. And we’re making history: it’s the first comedy series to be shot in one single 3-hour take. Been rehearsing this for months. If we get it right first time then this is the first and last day of filming 🤞
#BBCghosts
In some shots there are invisible edits where we swapped the actors for their doubles, and back again. Here’s an example.

Thanks for watching the new series of
#GHOSTS
! Here’s a thread of Behind the Scenes stuff for ep1. First up, a proper look at Mike’s Ghost Chart that Alison made for him. A lovely bit of production design, but there wasn’t room in the edit to linger on it for ages

I had the massive honour of directing a new episode of Doctor Who, with the dream team of Tennant, Tate and RTD. ‘Wild Blue Yonder’ is out on Saturday, it’s weird and exciting, and the plot is a TOTAL SECRET. I can’t wait to see what happens in it! 1/2
Also, this is the scrappy demo video I made before filming the final
#WildBlueYonder
chase: to help us work out how much time it'd take to film each shot, and how expensive each shot would be. It changed a bit for time/money reasons, but it was still a good guide
#DoctorWho
We spent a month developing the hoverkart chase: some initial ideas involved the baddies turning into snake, gorilla or spider-like shapes. In the end, we went for crawling giants. Our DoP Nick Dance filmed me doing this demo

4/ Don’t imagine anyone’ll be interested in this, but we spent a while in rehearsals finding the most intimate Twister positions for
@benwillbond
and
@realmatbaynton
#BBCghosts
We had two great actors playing the doppelgängers: a thankless task because you only see the backs of their heads. But so important because it helped David and Catherine give great performances.
@HfCripps
and
@TuiteDaniel
were brilliant.

It only took a couple of seconds to run down the length of our corridor set - so for some shots we used a massive treadmill. Here’s Arran Glassar, our SFX boss, testing it out
#DoctorWho
13/18
Thanks for watching ep2 of
#Ghosts
! Here’s an impressive Behind The Scenes clip of six idiots recording the sound of ghosts chasing a small car.
#BBCghosts
The most expensive special effect was the massive corridor. Even though it was green screen, when you looked through the camera you could see a live feed of a rough version of the CG background. Here it is with George and Helen, our stand-ins.

Fan PSA: the story of Wild Blue Yonder isn’t a secret because there are any surprise returning actors or villains. It’s just because we thought you might find it fun to watch it without knowing what’s going to happen next. Promise!
#WildBlueYonder
was edited by genius Tim Hodges, who had to deal with super complicated split screens and temp VFX. I don’t have a picture of Tim editing so here is a completely unrelated video of someone dusting the spaceship set

Here's a brief behind-the-scenes thread for ep3 of
#GHOSTS
, aka the one where I always cry at the end. First up, the hi-tech way we filmed
@Lazbotron
’s spinning head in the volleyball scene. Barney from the Art Dept on chair-swivelling duties

Thank you very much for watching the finale of Series 2 of
#GHOSTS
! Here’s the last behind-the-scenes thread (till the Xmas special). Unfortunately it didn’t snow during the shoot so here’s how we did the sledge bit 1/11

If you watched tonight’s stressful episode of This is Going to Hurt, here’s a behind the scenes 🧵 about it (I directed eps 5+6+7):
1/10: The set was so detailed you could pick up any folder in the back of shot, and it’d be filled with notes written by our medical advisors
It’s Doctor Who night! I’m going to watch my episode with my dad, who remembers watching the live broadcast of the first ever episode when he was 11 ❤️❤️

The very last thing we filmed was the very first shot of the episode: the house in Lincolnshire that Isaac Newton actually lived in. And it was filmed by
@JonathonAiken
, the director of
#DoctorWho
Unleashed, who made this great BTS video. 18/18
There's a bit in
#Ghosts
where
@realmatbaynton
appears in a bath. There are no edits or digital tricks - Mat just got into the bath incredibly quickly and then tapped
@Charitchie
's foot as soon as he was ready
#BBCghosts
When we film very tight close-ups, only the tiniest clapperboard will fit in shot. Maybe you have to be on set to appreciate it, but when it’s brought out it looks so adorable that everyone involuntarily goes “awww”

10/ It's been a joy directing Ghosts for the last 2 years, but in 2021 I’m going to get sucked off (Ghosts reference) and try something new. I’m handing over to
@NicholasCollett
who’s gonna be great! I’ll miss the brilliant cast + crew, and I can’t wait to watch Series 3 as a fan
We filmed two different versions of Adam’s GMC speech, and ultimately used a mix of the two in the edit. By the end of the first take, Ben’s performance had moved me to tears and I couldn’t speak to say “cut”
#ThisIsGoingToHurt
15/17
11/ See you at Christmas for the Ghosts Christmas special. We’ve nearly finished CGI-ing festive face masks onto all the human characters.
FAQs: the xmas episode’s 30 mins long, we don’t know the airdate, there is a 3rd series, bloopers coming soon-ish!
#bbcGhosts
Woah The Guardian says Ghosts is the 10th best TV show of 2020! Here's their very thoughtful
#bbcGhosts
review which manages to include references to both Kurosawa and "dicked in the nob":
Here’s a BTS thread for ep5 of
#Ghosts
!
@kfRedhot
looks happy here during his costume fitting, but we forgot to check if it's comfortable to lie down in armour at night. Kiell found out the hard way that it felt like being strangled in a freezer. Sorry Kiell

We couldn’t afford to film in a real supermarket so we made one out of a shelf, some greenscreen and a lot of cheese. Once we’d shot the scene, the cheese went straight to the local food bank
#ThisIsGoingToHurt
3/17
7/ The very first thing we filmed for the series was the phone video of
@kfRedhot
as an elf - during rehearsals in January 2020. Here’s the full version
#BBCghosts
5/ When
@simonfarnaby
co-write this brilliant episode, he made sure he could film most of his scenes in one day while lying on a bed. Sadly a rat had died under the bedroom floorboards and so the 10hr filming day was spent inhaling a toxic mix of Febreze and rat 🤮
#BBCghosts
I **highly** recommend tonight's episode of GHOSTS. Also it guest-stars
@LaughingWithAl
from Stath Lets Flats. This means there are now 5 actors, 8 crew and 1 pigeon who work on both
#Stath
and
#bbcGhosts
9/ I made a storyboard for the carol to check that we could squeeze all the story beats into one verse. And we could, as long as we repeated the last line. In this early edit, you'll hear Robin howling like a wolf in the chorus (we scrapped that idea eventually)
#BBCghosts
Wow here’s another behind the scenes thread of
#GHOSTS
for episode 2. First up: here’s
@kfRedhot
’s stunt, feat. Barney from the Art Department

The series builds to a six minute long emotional climax, filmed in a lake. Despite the cold, Ben and Rory gave astonishing performances. Filming it was in my top 3 most stressful directing experiences, for the reasons in this picture:

I inhaled the first four new episodes of BBC Ghosts last night. Non-stop joy! My favourite bits were the *spoilers*. Congratulations to all the Ghosts and to
@nicholascollett
for taking over the directing (turns out it's more fun watching a show that you haven't directed)
8/ The last thing we filmed for the series: Julian's nightmare. When Covid stopped the shoot a bit early, we had no time to film the floating heads - so we did them at Simon’s house on the 2nd-last day of the edit. He had to pretend my glasses case was a 90s mobile
#BBCghosts
Clapperboards usually only credit the Director + DOP. But this was a HUGE team effort, so we added new crew members' names every day:
#ThisIsGoingToHurt
7/17
6/ Julian’s daughter is played by Amy Maguire, our fantastic production designer. Here’s a before and after of one room in Button House after Amy’s team get their hands on it (check out the wood panelled wall: it’s fake!)
#BBCghosts
18/18 - When you next go to a hospital, there’s a chance (pretty small chance) you’ll be treated by one of our medical advisors, who all work in the NHS right now. Here’s an amazing thread about who they are and what they do:
As
#ThisIsGoingToHurt
comes to an end tonight, here’s a celebration of a huge part of the show: the dozens of real NHS medics who helped make it. They’re all absolute heroes. They’re why it looks so real, and most of them are also in the show! First up…
(1/15)
Thanks for watching ep2 of
#Ghosts
! Here’s an impressive Behind The Scenes clip of six idiots recording the sound of ghosts chasing a small car.
#BBCghosts
Thank you to everyone who watched the surprisingly moving ep3 of
#Ghosts
! Here’s another thread of very interesting behind-the-scenes things, starting with
@LollyAdefope
getting absolutely psyched to spook some humans
#BBCghosts
Thanks for all your very nice tweets about ep4 of
#Ghosts
! This was the first episode we filmed, and it was really confusing because no one knew if people were actual crew members, or actors playing crew members
#BBCghosts
To help you through the second lockdown, Series 2 of GHOSTS is out tonight from 8.30pm on
@BBCOne
.
Here's a celebratory BTS video from the end of series 1, where i was working out how best to film someone's head falling off
#bbcGhosts
I directed the new show from the Horrible Histories / Yonderland team! It’s called GHOSTS, it’s funny, silly, there are a LOT of ghosts in it, and it’s on
@BBCOne
at 9.30 tonight.
#BBCghosts
I’ll be eternally grateful to the NHS because when I broke my hip in a bike accident in 2019 (here’s my X-ray), they screwed me back together for free at the Royal London Hospital… which is 300 metres away from our fake hospital set.
#ThisIsGoingToHurt

We reduced the last week's filming, and wrapped
#bbcGhosts
2 early on Tuesday, juuust before all UK TV production shut down.
The final day was mainly scenes with the plague victims 😷
In ep7, filming Ben running down the stairs while talking to camera involved... holding a heavy camera while running down the stairs backwards. Here’s DOP Nick practising the move. We did 30 runs the evening before the shoot, and shot 13 takes on the day
#ThisIsGoingToHurt
13/17
Lots of
#GHOSTS
fans have asked where they can buy the Death Disco poster in Alison + Mike's bedroom. It was designed specially for
#bbcGhosts
by our Art Director Polly Stevens, and she's just made a link so you can buy some A3 copies for £15
10/ Here are some special clapperboards from across the shoot (we go up a slate number every time the camera moves to a new position). Illustrations by Gina Fields, our standby art director
#bbcGhosts
Here’s a trailer for This is Going to Hurt: out on 8th Feb on BBC One. I directed half of it, and still can’t believe I can cross "directing Ben Whishaw" off my bucket list - thus bringing me one step closer to death!
It was really hard to get the binbags to spring out of the cupboard - until Polly our Art Director dressed up like a ninja and just hurled binbags at the camera
#bbcGhosts
11/11
People also asking: “will this make it funnier?” No, it will actually make the show less funny. But the behind-the-scenes video will be very impressive
Shruti’s gloomy flat was actually built in part of the hospital set. There isn’t even a bath in her bathroom - just Dan the focus puller
#ThisIsGoingToHurt
8/17
I'll post more Behind the Scenes stuff next week, after ep2 goes out on TV in England (sorry for the delay Wales, Scotland, America, Australia, rest of world)
2/ We didn’t want to make
@SimonFarnaby
make the three hour round trip to the location just to see his hands for five minutes, so
@Lazbotron
’s head is actually being held by Rich from the lighting team
#bbcGhosts
Filming a fake birth scene is complicated. So everyone would know what we were doing when, we stuck detailed shooting schedules on the wall. If you’re interested in technical details, there’s a lot of info here if you zoom in:
#ThisIsGoingToHurt
5/17
3/ For the scenes that take place in a different location, we don't have the budget to travel everyone somewhere else, so we film everything in a camouflaged bit of the main house. eg, the minicab office was a little set built inside a luxurious drawing room
#bbcGhosts
Hiring and covid testing 80 background actors in a stately home is very expensive, which is why we shot half the wedding inside a photo booth in a garage:

Just about to start filming on Ghosts series 2. And we’re making history: it’s the first comedy series to be shot in one single 3-hour take. Been rehearsing this for months. If we get it right first time then this is the first and last day of filming 🤞
