Holocaust Memorial Day: Isaac Shishi stolpersteine on Donore Avenue Dublin 8 outside St. Catherine's National School .. Isaac was raised nearby on St. Albans Road .. murdered along with his family in Lithuania in 1941 ..
Vandalism on Cork Street today .. 2 fine street trees taken out by developers .. so many questions .. why? .. did DCC permit the destruction of these very attractive street trees on a street where there are so few? .. will DCC take action against the developer?
Planning application WEB 1531/22 to erect c3m high gates to close off v attractive Tivoli Square on Francis Street to public access. Provision of this accessible open space and it's use for Cultural and other events was a crucial planning gain to offset loss of Tivoli theatre ..
I don't think it is a good idea to demolish this historic building on Mark's Alley off Francis Street Dublin 8 ... anyone know about it's history ..was it a 19th century social housing scheme?
President Mary Robinson welcomes lesbians and gay men to Aras in1992. Mary Holland wrote in Irish Times "Not for the first time, our President, effortlessly and generously subversive of entrenched prejudice, has given a signal that cannot be ignored"
And now a bench has just been added .. so people can rest and linger .. have a chat .. there should be a lot more public seating in public places .. corner of Cork Street and Donore Avenue ..
Good news that DCC has refused planning permission for the 3m high gates at Tivoli Square Francis Street partly because of the precedent it would set ...WEB 1531/22
Really great photo by Mick Brown of the corner of Cork Street and Donore Avenue before the awful damage done by the road widening .. there was a great range of shops opposite ..
Good news that planning application 3097/23 to demolish 2 residential buildings of historic interest at 2 &3 Mark's Alley off Francis Street to provide for aparthotel has been refused by DCC partly because of the loss of historic fabric in an Architectural Conservation Area ..
So sad to hear of the death of Eoin Collins .. a great friend to so many people .. Eoin had a huge commitment to social justice and equality and made a major contribution to social progress in Ireland through his work with GLEN, Nexus Research Cooperative & other groups .. 1
That used to be one of the ugliest most prominent derelict sites in the Liberties .. for decades .. now a lovely single dwelling with great planting .. corner of Thomas Court and Earl Street South viewed from Marrowbone Lane ..
Gay Byrne played a great role in achieving a more open and tolerant society in Ireland including for LGBT people .. the Late Late Show debate on gay law reform in 1989 and his humorous comments were pivotal in moving public opinion towards equality ..
New treeless Street linking Margaret Kennedy Road with Cameron Street D8 looking bleak .. why no Street trees? In an area seriously lacking in Street trees according to UCD Geography research .. no Street trees on long southern boundary of Margaret Kennedy Road either ..
@Independent_ie
It was LGBT activists and their allies over many decades in Ireland that was primarily responsible for Ireland to be able to have a Taoiseach who is gay .. and without any public controversy ..
Two of these wonderful mature trees are to be felled & c600m2 of green space tarmaced over to provide parking for 43 cars at historic Bru Chaoimhin campus on Cork Street/South Brown Street D8 .. an area seriously lacking in green space and trees ..
@CiaranCuffe
Nope .. I think prompt removal of statues in such a public space normalizing slavery is good idea .. we could now listen to ethnic community groups and women's groups about how and where they should be relocated .. and interpreted
DCC are beginning to take out pedestrian barriers at Dolphins Barn & it's great improvement .. there are a huge amount of barriers here & besides being very ugly they inconvenience pedestrians .. hopefully the many barriers on Cork St will be taken out soon .. well done DCC
Beautiful new planting just gone in today on corner of Cork Street and Donore Avenue .. was an ugly paved area used for unauthorised parking .. well done DCC local area office ...
At long last it looks like development has started on the old Rialto Cinema/Windsor Motor site at Dolphins Barn .. derelict for about 20 years .. c300 student accommodation units .. see
Great photo of Lesbian and Gay Pride c1984 Dublin .. don't know who took it .. Rose Dugdale in foreground .. Donal Sheehan holding banner to left and me to right .. Arthur Leahy in between ..
An Bord Pleanala confirm DCC decision that Player-Wills is a vacant site . Recently valued at up to 100m Euro and with annual levy of 7% that should speed up development, and levy is ringfenced for local regeneration.
So many junctions in Dublin where this should be done ... High Street .. Dean Street/Patrick Street/Kevin Street ... Dolphins Barn Street/Reuben Street etc
My records went into National Library today incl .. 1. Cork early 1980s 2. Trade Unions from early 1980s on 3. GLEN first phase 1988 to c1994 gay law reform, Unfair Dismissals and Equality legislation 4. GLEN phase two c1995 to c2005, Poverty report, Gay HIV Strategies .....
Very sad to hear of death of Don Donnelly .. Don played major role in LGBT progress as dynamic Director of Gay Switchboard Dublin and founder member and co-chair of GLEN .. Don instigated pivotal 1989 Late Late Show where he gave soap box address on GLENs demands for equality
Planning applications that undermine the integrity and quality of the original planning permission should be refused as a matter of course it seems to me .. otherwise it sets a precedent for continuing 'dumbing down' of developments ..
New planning application ref 3816/21 to create large Vacant Site at Newmarket, Ardee Street, and Mill Street D8 .. application is to demolish all buildings and erect hoarding .. no new buildings are proposed .. existing buildings are well used by taxi company, Church etc ..
Just a very simple question .. how come NAMA is sitting on a vacant site at Player Wills near Dolphins Barn for many years .. when it could deliver more than 750 homes ?
Got the boxes from the National Library today .. they are taking my records for their LGBT archives .. a great honour .. I have good material on our engagement with the trade union movement since 1980s .. which led to great progress ..
@irishcongress
@forsa_union_ie
Elderly man clearly with difficulty walking trying to cross the street at Dolphins Barn today having to walk longer circuitous route because of these "guardrails" designed to delay & make pedestrians walk further .. why are they still on our city streets?
I know it's small scale but it is great to see new planting underneath the trees at the Timberyard housing scheme at St. Luke's Avenue D8 .. it's this attention to detail that makes cities great places .. well done to DCC .. Parks Department I think ..
Another heavily trafficked wide junction without a pedestrian crossing ... this one at Kevin Street .. a major east west pedestrian route .. Dublin is v pedestrian unfriendly ..
Blackpitts today .. one of many streets in the Liberties that could do with tree planting .. little demand for all those on-street car parking spaces .. could provide very attractive sitting outdoors area for cafe to right ..
@DublinGreening
The Archaeology of Coming Out .. in 1977 I was leaving UCC to go to UCD to study Planning in Earlsfort Terrace .. I was determined to come out and meet gay people .. as soon as I got to Dublin I phoned Tel-a-Friend to find out where gay people met ..
New very welcome DCC housing scheme around Weaver Park Cork Street D8 .. but balcony treatment is so hostile & very ugly .. with full height bars in some cases ..
You are sitting on your balcony relaxing and looking up you see you are behind bars ...
Then Chief Planner in Department of Housing & Planning contacts a senior official in Planning Dept of DCC saying "the full rigour of disciplinary action should be applied" to myself & Paul Kearns for criticising the Departments forced reduction in apartment standards in 2015 ..
Scaffolding has come down on the Newmarket Yards and Premier Inn hotel development at St Luke's Avenue D8 .. looks like good landscaping and planting is going in between the buildings and the footpath making for a much nicer experience for pedestrians ..
Cork Street, Dolphins Barn Street and St. Luke's Avenue were in a disastrous state c2002 when the road widening was almost complete ... the result of almost 50 years of decline & destruction after Dublin Corporation decided in 1946 to widen the streets ..
Ardee House on the corner of Ardee Street and Chamber Street Dublin 8 .. pub and apartments overhead vacant for about 15 years .. Planning Application 5370/07 to demolish and redevelop was refused by ABP because of the loss of important historic fabric ..
Why is this site owner allowed to take over the footpath? Do they have a permit for that? On New Street South
@dccscarea
.. and there is no construction on site ..
Good news/progress .. HSE & National Monuments are to engage in "appropriate care and conservation" of Quaker Burial Ground on Cork Street .. thanks to all who made this progress possible .. only 1 upright headstone .. many others flat on graves
Very sad to hear of the death of Niamh Breathnach .. among her many achievements for equality in Ireland was the broad-ranging Equality legislation we have today .. contd/
Niamh Bhreathnach, minister who abolished college fees, has died
A Late Late Show producer told me later that before the programme Gay was neutral about gay law reform etc .. until he heard the ugly comments of the right wing .. another case of him an exemplar of middle Ireland being open to change .. and then leading it
DCC should open up this fenced off green area at Donore Avenue/Margaret Kennedy Road for outdoor play & recreation this Summer .. a Park area here was requirement of the Planning Permission for the housing at MKR .. the Liberties is seriously lacking in public open spaces ..
Current issue of Phoenix magazine ... including that Chief Planner of the Department of Housing and Planning called on DCC to apply "the full rigour of disciplinary action" against myself and Paul Kearns for criticising the Department's reduction in apartment standards in 2015
Great to see the beginnings of much needed Conservation works to the western wall of the Quaker Burial Ground c1698 on Cork Street .. fair play to the HSE ...
It is a long standing urban design objective of DCC to provide a new pedestrian Street through the Tivoli site and the adjoining Chadwicks site to Vicar Street .. this planning application would undermine this key planning objective to open up a vast impermeable area ..
Prominent derelict site at Dolphins Barn has been in this state for long time .. blight on the area & important gateway to city .. not on Derelict Sites Register .. one of many examples .. we seem to have too much acceptance of derelict sites .. as if they are inevitable
Poignant Unveiling Ceremony of the HIV/AIDS Monument in the People's Park in Phoenix Park today .. very good speeches by An Taoiseach Leo Varadker, Minister Roderic O'Gorman, and Rory O'Neill .. great sculpture in a great location ..
The Gay Sauna Project .. radical in its day .. and successful due primarily to great work of
@Khayden2412
.. just gave possibly only surviving copy to
@james_grannell
who is doing his PhD on HIV/AIDS issues and he is generously going to do PDF which we can share ..
Short story of officials housing policy failure .. large still vacant site opp Coombe Hospital got planning per 3853/17 for 70 apartments .. then Department reduces apartment stds for Build to Rent & to 'speed up planning process' allows planning apps to go directly to ABP ..
Quaker burial ground Cork Street opened in 1697 .. according to recent research by Roy Pearson of the Friends Historical Library there are 4,721 bodies buried there including those transferred from Stephen's Green where the RCSI now is ..
Good to see these apartments apparently occupied at last .. they were vacant for about two years after construction .. it's a very nice infill scheme by Architects whose name I have forgotten .. opposite Lidl on Cork Street Dublin 8 ..
@PeterMurtagh
@heyadaithi
The awful thing is that DCC is responsible for two potentially great markets .. both now vacant .. Iveagh Markets for many years ..
A huge hinterland north of Cork Street Dublin 8 is impermeable between Marrowbone Lane and Ardee Street .. no north-south pedestrian routes .. it's great that planning permission for shared living scheme requires new pedestrian route Cork St - Summer St through the site
40 years ago in 1982 the LGPSU and then ICTU voted strongly in favour of equality for lesbian and gay workers .. the trade union movement played a huge role in progress for LGBT people in Ireland over the decades ..
The trade union movement has been pivotal to progress for LGBT progress in Ireland .. 30 years ago the Dublin Council of Trade Unions clear in their support for equality .. at a time when we had little support and many powerful opponents
Great historic photos of Fever Hospital and House of Recovery c1804 on Cork Street .. it dealt with many epidemics in 19th and 20th centuries .. a historic place to be treasured and opened to public .. thanks to
@LibertiesCultu1
for sourcing ..
Even on sunny day this new Street on what was Teresa's Gardens looks dismal .. extensive defensive high railings & wall, what's it's purpose? .. very narrow footpath no Street trees .. this is primary pedestrian route through to vast Hines scheme & South Circular Road ..
More and different new planters on Cork Street Dublin 8 .. these are outside the Weir Nurse's Home c1900 .. humanising the traffic dominated Street .. well done DCC .. keep going ..
Senator
@RebeccaMoy
got good news from Minister for Heritage
@noonan_malcolm
on planned much needed Conservation works to Quaker burial ground on Cork Street dating from 1697 protected under National Monuments legislation ..
@NationalMons
Creating vacant sites is the epitome of unsustainable development .. could be a blight on area for years to come .. 20 years ago OPW got permission to demolish all buildings on large site beside Smithfield so it could develop 'quickly' .. Still a vacant site today ...
Quaker street-making in the Liberties
Fumbally Lane laid out by local brewer and Quaker Jacob Poole in the 1721 to connect Blackpitts where he had properties with New Street
Pim Street dates from 1813 was named after John Pim, a merchant of Pim & Goodbody
4 large vacant sites on Cork Street not on Vacant Sites Register so pay no levy and no disincentives to keeping them vacant .. vacantsites
@dublincity
.ie
Bollards just gone in on Cork Street in front of Lidl .. there was always a lot of car parking here .. I wonder will it stop car parking in bus lane ..
Great to see the pits being prepared today on St Luke's Avenue D8 for planting of creepers .. hopefully resulting in a 'green wall' .. much needed greening in the area ..
Sometimes it's the small bits of progress that matter .. previously this pedestrian walkway was unlit & seemed unsafe to use in the dark .. I got on to DCC and they required it to be lighted at night .. it was today .. making the many pedestrians on Cork Street feel safer ..
The 2015 reduction in apartment standards was the beginning of a series of housing policy disasters such as co-living, lower standards for build-to-rent, SHDs, etc. that made the housing crisis worse .. Email received via FOI ..
All Dublin Quakers prior to 1860s are buried here in Cork Street D8 Quaker burial ground .. dating from 1690s .. a major historic monument .. now sadly neglected .. and unrecognised
