I recognize this highway! It’s built directly on the farmland of my grandparents’ village. The village they were ethnically cleansed from in 1948 by Israeli terrorist militias, causing them to live the next 70 years as refugees in poverty. Good luck with those sirens though!

Seeing as twitter is losing its collective mind regarding artistic depictions of minarets, I figure it’s a good time to share some of my latest woodworking projects.

I took this image, threw it in Photoshop to clean up/edit, then VCarve to program a carving file, then had a cnc carve it into a piece of cherry wood, then painted, sanded, and now I have a new addition to my coffee station.

A beautiful stanza on inviting others to enjoy the good moments and leave behind hardships, as written by Ottoman poet Veysî Bey: Come, the coffee has brewed Come, the foam is starting to overflow My day is pleasant, o friends The bad days will pass, come (We still prefer tea)

There's academic activists who built careers for themselves through studying & representing minorities in Muslim history: Armenians, black Africans, Yazidis, etc. They're silent now. They were never about standing up for the oppressed. Their aims were always much more cynical.

The not-so-subtle Islamophobia among many activists needs to be called out. Every Palestinian narrative under the sun is being amplified and celebrated but the piety-minded approach is constantly being told to take a back seat.

I have never once seen a kalām discussion on this bird app that had any benefit to anyone besides the egos of those involved. There’s a place for academic discussions. This isn’t it.

Whenever a heterodox idea/person is in the limelight for a minute, there’s a cohort of non-Muslim academic who tweet threads about “acktshually, X isn’t un-Islamic at all, here’s why…” You don’t get a say on what’s Islamic and what isn’t it if you aren’t part of the community.

The Sufi vs Orthodox Sunni false dichotomy is crippling to peoples' understanding of the Islamic tradition. There's no excuse for academic writing that frames an entire understanding of historical events around this false narrative.

I would give anything to go back to the day before he was shot and just have one normal conversation with him. There was pain and regret, but that multiplied a hundred fold the moment he took his last breath and any opportunity was lost. (3/4)

A misconception regarding Ahmadi Muslims is that they are “non-Muslims.” Let us look at the facts. Ahmadis: ✅ Follow the Qur’an ✅ Believe in Prophet Muhammad as the “Seal of the Prophets” ✅ Believe in the 5 Pillars of Islam ✅ Follow the 6 Articles of Faith Know your facts.

build some kind of relationship with him over email, but it never got anywhere. Ego & anger stood in the way. By the time I saw him again it was too late to have a conversation with him. The regret I have over that missed opportunity to mend thing with him is enormous. (2/4)

The idea that after 6 months of genocide there are still people on the fence to be “won over” is laughable. It’s so divorced from reality as to make you wonder if this hot take is disingenuous in the first place. (Hint: it is).

Not the way to win over people. You’re a guest someone’s home and then claim the right to stay and deliver a political message despite being told you’re no longer welcome.

Every Muslim on the internet needs to take a one year sabbatical during which everyone studies basic Arabic, 'aqida, and logic. Then maybe we can all come back and have productive conversations. The "The Muslim Tradition says..." hot takes lately have been insufferable.

Hot take: if we obsess over reverting places of worship to their status “before” conquest, then almost every house of worship will have to become a temple to a Greek or Roman idol. Stop imposing modernist European frameworks on everything.

This is an easy one. The Reconquista resulted in the permanent loss of Muslim control in Iberia. The Mongol conquests led to the Islamicization of 3 out of 4 Mongol khanates & a fascinating period of intellectual reconciliation between Mongol & Middle Eastern political theory.

Thread/ When certain segments of the Muslim Twittersphere constantly bemoan "well why aren't the ʿulemāʾ calling out XYZ? I have to do it myself!", they don't understand the big picture. The job of the scholars isn't to be reactionaries, responding to every minute transgression.

Every now and then I’m reminded that some non-Muslim academics take it upon themselves to declare what the “correct” reading of certain words in the Qur’ān is. It sounds like a parody of white savior complex but it somehow isn’t.

This is a very cool idea. Can be especially useful for madrasa students, since many of the scholars they study have very bare wiki pages or none at all.

It's very strange to me to be surprised by this. The very foundation of the modern liberal order we inhabit was built on subjecting Africans and Native Americans to a sub-human form of existence. 🧵

Some people are just unable to feel the same kind of empathy for Palestinians as they would for other human beings. This fact has been of the most difficult things for me to make sense of since the Gaza war began.

This analogy is fantastically inappropriate. Unions operate to protect workers against capitalist exploitation from the wealthy. To put the Creator in that position is utmost disrespect and an entirely unbefitting understanding of that miraculous episode of the Prophet’s ﷺ life.

The irony or responding with this, as if Salahuddin wasn’t literally a scholar himself. He gets one of the longest chapters in Subki’s Tabaqat. Not to mention that the Zengid/Ayyubid revival owed its foundation to the work of al-Ghazali and Abdul Qadir Jilani decades earlier.

More evidence (as if it is needed) that Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyya is a horrible publisher. Top is from the 1872 Yahya Efendi Matbaasi edition of Molla Fenari's "Fuṣūl al-Badāʾiʿ fī Uṣūl al-Sharāʾiʿ". Bottom is from the 2006 DKI edition of the text. An inexcusable mistake.

My grandfather would drive a truck from Yafa to Jerusalem every morning to deliver oranges before ‘48. The last time I was in Palestine I drove from Jerusalem to Yafa in an hour. Gaza or Haifa were another hour away. The potential is there when the oppression is removed.

One day, it will be easy for anyone of any religion or ethnicity to drive from Jerusalem to Gaza just to have a picnic by the sea. No checkpoints, no special documents, no tanks, no guns, no border walls. That's the promise of a Free Palestine.
