I genuinely had to check to make sure this headline wasn’t a parody but no it’s real. Someone wrote this sentence and an editor thought yeah sure that’s reasonable
Just my regular reminder that if you come into London via the M3 you will be greeted by Sonic the Hedgehog which is the optimum London entry experience
BBC Breakfast report on the PlayStation 25th anniversary this morning - instead of assessing the cultural impact of the machine we get the same old references to violence and how much money the industry makes. Will TV news move beyond this shallow, generalist tone in my lifetime?
I mean, I can’t help but feel that if you don’t want people to read your attacks on Meghan Markle as racist, maybe don’t try to blame her for putting a *whole generation* off reading because she did a book? Maybe?
Quietly judging newspapers for running reviews of the “year in pop culture” without mentioning video games. Fortnite: 200m users. Red Dead 2 - $725m revenue in three days. A whole generation watching esports, trading game memes on TikTok, making their own games, but whatever
My wife got sooooo bored of hearing our sons listening to the same types of gamer voices on YouTube and Twitch, so she asked me to write this article recommending diverse streamers. All of these are brilliant
I tested the first consumer VR headsets 30 years ago and I've tried almost all of them since and I have come to the conclusion that people do not want to wear giant sweaty space hats to make entertainment poke them right in their eyes, I'm so sorry
Hi, I wrote about the
@PlayWarframe
community and how it has provided a safe but grown-up social place for my ASD son. Big thanks to
@rebbford
and
@moitoi
for a lovely Zoom chat
I know *everyone* is saying this, but the idea that gamers are marking Unpacking down on Steam because it's "short" is so sad - I mean, I feel genuine sorrow for those people whose understanding of value and experience is so skewed and malformed and so deeply antithetical to joy
Game designers! I have a serious question for an article I'm writing: if you were asked to design a big Triple A narrative action adventure blockbuster BUT you had to remove guns/weapons/combat as the central mechanic/feedback loop, what would you use instead?
"I was a Sega and Nintendo girl, while Rosie spent most of her childhood tied to a tree." Here are brilliant YouTubers
@RoseEllenDix
and
@Roxetera
on the joy video games can bring in a relationship ❤️🎮
Hi the original Silent Hill is 20-years-old so I wrote about how Team Silent set out to make a strange, transgressive game about psychological trauma – rather than a horror game about zombies
I bet WB is super relieved no one previously patented skill trees, xp, multi-button melee combat, procedural generation, inventory screens, mission structure, video game motion capture, map and HUD exploration iconography, progressive merit systems... 1/325
WB Interactive has finally secured the patent to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War's signature Nemesis system after multiple failed attempts.
It's interesting the way he leaps immediately to 'we don't want to design by checklist' when asked about a female lead, as though it would somehow harm the integrity of the story if they instinctively included a character who could in a small way represent 51% of the population
I knew this was an amazing game when I accidentally fell off a cliff fighting a lizard man - he fell off too and died. My pawn clambered down, looked at me lying injured, looked at the lizard then said “I would not have thought of vanquishing him that way”
Lots of screenshots in video game press kits are unusable. If poss., please include
- screenshot of lead character, close up, facing cam
- one brightly lit shot
- action shots with HUD removed, characters close to cam
- a posed hi-res group shot of leads (like a film poster)

Hi, I reviewed the PS5 version of Sea of Thieves - but it's effectively also a review of the current Xbox and PC versions of the game. It is, quite simply, a masterpiece of imaginative game making
It's so weird that while this story was building, many newspapers were asking: should Meghan Markle be using private jets? Should Meghan Markle have edited Vogue? Is Meghan Markle royal enough? It's so weird they focused on her and not Prince Andrew. Perhaps we'll never know why
It’s not just boredom tho - video games have also provided a vital venue for social contact. This isn’t about bored people playing games alone, it’s people meeting friends and having new experiences together
I was the Guardian’s video game editor for ten years - I’m really interested to know why my job was more “bonkers” than film editor, music editor or books editor?
Morning - am starting an occasional series on bonkers journalist job titles. Hot on the heels of dear BBC’s « reality Check Correspondent » (all journalism is reality checking) I notice the Guardian has a « Video Games Editor ».
I am writing a piece on “cheesing” in games - I.e when you beat a hard quest/boss through “illegitimate” tactics (hiding in a small space where enemies can’t harm you, trapping a boss in the scenery, etc) - what are your fave/guiltiest cheesy experiences ever?
🎮🧀
This headline is disastrously inaccurate about the intentions and results of a relatively small-scale study. The idea that autism can be “solved” and the implication that parents of autistic children have somehow failed them as babies is gross
I lost count years ago of the number of people I’ve talked to online, at games events, at festivals, in pubs, in schools, in hospitals, in hospices, in game development studios, and everywhere else, for whom this was inarguably true
Why do so many video game players invert their controls and what does it have to do with that famous blue/black white/gold dress controversy? I spoke to Dr Ross Goutcher at
@StirUni
and Dr Jennifer Corbett at
@Bruneluni
to find out!
Oh god, I'm JOKING. I know people use VR for sims, for cultural installations, for work – I've been writing about this for 30 years! I'm talking about mass mainstream acceptance and, god, honestly I just wanted to write sweaty space hat
Imagine if, *every single time* BBC Breakfast ran a piece on films, it spent three quarters of the report attempting to encapsulate the entire history of the medium, as well as box office statistics and early controversies. It's so tiring. This industry is 50 years old : (
Great news for fans of video game soundtracks and Bafta-winning composers -
@jessicacurry2
is presenting a new Saturday afternoon games music programme on
@BBCRadio3
! She told me all about it...
(He's pretty good at the game, but may well divert any conversation to: manga, super-man films, what he's having for dinner, or what he had for dinner the night before)
Managed to miss the Theresa May resignation speech because I was playing Void Bastards – which, coincidentally, should also be the collective name for the tory leadership candidates
Can’t believe no other so called games journalists have done this yet, but here is a useful size comparison between the Xbox Series X and the Grandstand TVG-3600 MK II. As you can see, the Xbox is taller and has significantly fewer images of stickmen playing sports
Anyway sorry, it doesn't matter in the wider scheme of things. But I started writing about games in 1995 and I never imagined that in 25 years time, mainstream news would still be going "wow, these newfangled things make money now... but should we be worried?" Ughhh
So yeah for those interested, this is what Dan Houser, (ex)senior writer on the Grand Theft Auto games said during our interview in 2012 when I asked why none of the lead characters in GTA V were women...
Autistic children are high value targets for bullies: they can be easy to wind up, the results are dramatic and often, because bullying can trigger a meltdown, the victim ends up getting the blame. Parents and schools MUST educate children about neurodiversity.

Driving my son to school this morning:
Me: I played Apex Legends last night for the first time in ages and won!
Son: If you haven't played for a while, the server was probably full of bots.
*Silence*
Me:(stopping car) You can get out here and walk the rest of the way
After 25 years in games writing and a couple of years in game development I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that if you think an issue with a game is caused by the studio being "lazy", you're wrong. You are 100% categorically wrong. Thank you byeeeeee 😘
The thing I’m most proud of this year: going to my GP, talking about my issues with stress and anxiety, and going on the antidepressant Sertraline which means I don’t wake up dreading the day anymore. Looking after yourself is the best achievement ✌️💕
This screenshot of Two Point Hospital, which shows a patient resembling Freddie Mercury getting therapy from Sonic the Hedgehog, is the greatest image the games industry has ever produced
Hi, I asked
@GameDesignDan
to help me write a love letter to
@PlayApex
, my favourite online shooter since CoD4 and a brilliant example of flow vs friction in game design
As Sertraline is trending... I take 50mg a day (though sometimes forget as I'm an idiot) for anxiety. Apart from not waking up every morning dreading the day, the only side effects I have are really vivid dreams and occasional weird euphoria. Let's normalise mental health care
Honestly all the people saying ‘gawd, Sonic is just a kids movie’ have clearly missed out on the last decade of frenzied geek nostalgia commodification. There’s only one reason my kids know who Sonic is: if they fail my annual Sega exam they have to move out.
All the people clamouring for the death of the BBC right now - I mean, have they ever actually watched TV or listened to the radio in practically ANY other country? Because I think they’re in for a real shock
As a 50-year-old looking back on a life spent playing games, reading books and watching films, none of the experiences I loved and that changed me and that I can still effortlessly recall involve me also thinking "it's a shame it wasn't 10 hours longer for no valid reason"
Every game publisher who uses politicised settings, concepts and scenarios but also says “we’re not making a political game” is basically making the interactive version of that Kendall Jenner Pepsi ad
Between this, that Ubisoft guy, Cyberpunk 2077, and the other weasels who are trying to hamfistedly tackle social commentary that’s out of their depth while “remaining neutral” about which side of injustice is bad, I think we’re in for a bunch of years of shitty releases buds
This is such a boring thing to tweet but I’m on a busy train to London and literally no one else is wearing a mask. Is there some sort of mass hallucinatory denial going on in this country? After the two weeks I had with the virus I am taking no chances but I am v much alone
Lost childhoods? Just yesterday I was talking to a mum whose son was really worried about going to a new school but played Fortnite online with a few of his classmates and it completely broke the ice and made him feel secure. I hear stories like that *all the time*.
For anyone who is bewildered by what's happening in the US, especially those tempted to share the ill-judged all lives matter hashtag, buy any of these books from your local independent store and read them. Love to my black colleagues and friends.
#BlackLivesMatter
Having recovered from my PC building escapade I think I have the next hit Bake Off derivative. Eight contestants get the budget to build a PC each week, judged on specs, looks and build difficulty. Celeb PC builder Henry Cavill to judge. How do I pitch this?
Reminder to parents buying an Xbox or PlayStation for Christmas - if you all want to play in the morning, you should set it up tonight as it’ll need a system update which could take a couple of hours!
What are your favourite first-person video games that don't have guns and don't force you to view the world through a target reticule?
(This question is in NO WAY related to the majority of games shown during the recent video game showcase events. No. Absolutely not)
Can anyone think of pre-2000 examples of games that came with their own level editors, a la LittleBigPlanet, Super Mario Maker, etc? E.G. I loved the Boulderdash Construction Kit on C64. It has to be a game that came with an editor, rather than, say, a games creation package.
BBC R6 news report on the Game Baftas just now. Only mentioned ONE nominee, spent the REST of the short piece telling us that - yep: games make more than films and that GTA was made in UK. Oh come ON! Games industry is 50 years old! Treat them like films - tell us the nominees!
Immersiveness is a preference for the habitual Valve series known as... Half-Life
And motion sickness can be avoided if you take the sitting route through what is known as... Half-Life
I want to say thank you to all the game developers who worked their asses off against the odds this year to make wonderful things. I hope you know that you helped the rest of us get through it all. Sincerely, thank you. I hope the industry is a kinder, better place for you in ‘22
I wrote a short feature for
@Medium
about whether epic narrative games like Tomb Raider, Uncharted or Assassin's Creed can work without violence. Thanks to
@hunicke
,
@briecode
and
@hollygramazio
who answered my questions!
Very much appreciating
@DrRosena
quietly, resolutely tweeting examples of official government guidance on covid-19 that contradict the cabinet’s wretched defence of Cummings.
The Guardian didn't switch on comments for its story about how many Grammys Billy Eilish won. That's literally hundreds of middle-aged men robbed of the opportunity to write 'WHO?!?!?!' beneath the article before demanding to know what's happened to real music
Today in the Guardian, I make the catastrophic mistake of asking: can there be a big budget narrative game without continual violence?
Polite notice: I LOVE VIOLENT GAMES. I AM NOT ASKING FOR THEM TO BE BANNED.
Just catching up with the Watch Dogs Legion details, and I've spotted an error. "Every Londoner has a persistent life and relationships". Sorry ubisoft, this doesn't sound like any Londoner *I've* met.
Hello! I wrote quite an in-depth feature for
@GamesRadar
about how
@romero
's design principles around FPS map design are still guiding titles like Call of Duty to this very day! Contains diagrams and really cool quotes
Just sitting writing in my kitchen when it struck me that these options on my dishwasher sound like things that a voice over would shout in an amazing late nineties Sega rhythm action game
This is a huge problem with how mainstream news understands games: as a moneymaking tech industry not a cultural form that should be examined in the same way as film and music. But that’s what it is and has been for *decades*.
Not disagreeing at all with how massive the gaming industry is. Of course it is. But do we have an editor for every major branch of tech or industry? Course not. That’s what is open to question
I don’t want to impinge on the creativity of developers but at the same time we do need to urgently ban narrative graffiti in video games. If I see one more wall with “we’re all doomed” or “he’s watching” scrawled on it I’m going to start legal action
Making tea is such a mystery - and I make a LOT. I always use the same bags, make it in *exactly* the same way every time, but one out of every eight cups will be the absolute dream tea. The platonic ideal of tea. And there's no explaining why. Does this happen to anyone else?
"Progress has been made" but "there are some further issues that need resolution" - Prime Minister Theresa May to return to Brussels on Saturday for more

talks
I spoke to
@RavenLeilani
about the role of video games in her brilliant novel Luster, which has just been longlisted for the
@WomensPrize
. I *loved* this interview - her thoughts on role-playing games and storytelling are profound
One of the most shocking lessons Cyberpunk 2077 has to teach us is that, even in a hyper technological future, there is no escape from that guy who brings his guitar to the campsite
Speaking at the
@Autism
conference on technology today! I’ll be talking about video games and how my autistic son taught me new things about the value of play. I am very nervous 😬
Hello! I need to speak to people who collect video game soundtracks on vinyl! Is this you? If it is, I would like to speak to you! (This is for a feature, BTW, not just personal interest)
Please reply to this tweet

I now have a desktop train platform sign from
@RailDepartures
between my two monitors so I can view what’s happening at Frome station while I work. It is extremely calming. Everything is running on time this morning
To celebrate Doom’s 30th anniversary I spoke to
@romero
,
@_ddt__
and
@SandyofCthulhu
about the making and legacy of the seminal FPS. It was such a pleasure to do these interviews!
@OutsideXbox
@outsidextra
just to let you know my son is now a huge fan of your videos and at regular intervals he shouts "But have you met THIS person?" and I have to look at the TV and identify an awkwardly freeze-framed image of Andy Farrant.
