Guys, political parties are not supposed to be tribes that we pledge allegiance to and defend to the death. They aren’t teams that deserve our undying loyalty. They are orgz that we assess periodically to see who’s better at representing our interests and those of the country.
Just thinking about how the federal government has managed to pass $10 a day daycare for the entire country minus one province (so far) in the middle of a pandemic — truly revolutionary. But a few hundred truckers throw a tantrum and they’re treated like revolutionary leaders
Dear
#cdnmedia
: I honestly don’t care much if MPs, Mayors, MPPs and even the PM are filling sandbags effectively for the floods. I do care about what policies they’ve supported to mitigate flooding and climate change. Those are the headlines I want to read.
#cdnpoli
Ever notice how frequently the critics of PM Trudeau make great efforts to ‘feminize’ him first before they mock and dismiss him? I find it deeply disturbing. By all means, critique away and like who you like, but focus on the policies and not outdated gender stereotypes
#cdnpoli
Lots of people starting to shame others for walking outside even while following social distancing. That’s just panic talk now. Show me the science that says being outside is bad for you if you don’t congregate and practice social distancing? This is a marathon, not a sprint
Wow: Canada’s most influential and level-headed public health columnist calling for closure of schools in Canada — not as a panic response but a preventative measure so it doesn’t get like Italy or Iran.

Stop all those unnecessary and costly subscriptions.
I got rid of Audible and 2 of my TV streaming services with these 2 free apps that require only my library card.
Another free, under-used app is CBC Gem. Lots of great movie, music and news documentaries etc.
Recommend!
I’m finding the second year without my husband harder than the first year. The first year there is survival adrenaline (especially since I am still parenting two kids with special needs and running a business). The second year, there’s just grief.
Memories bring peace and pain
I'm finding that grief runs by its own 'schedule.' Next week, I finish 11 months' Kaddish for my sister which symbolically closes the books on my grief. Except it doesn't.
It’s not incidental that we woefully neglect our seniors like we woefully neglect those with disabilities. In a hyper capitalist society when we only value someone according to their ability to be ‘productive,’ we lose our own humanity.
I love arrivals at the airport. You can see all this racist crap on Twitter, but here, there are 100 languages and ethnicities and every mix imaginable and abled and disabled and young and old and happy embraces and kisses everywhere you look. Canada, we are pretty lucky 💗
Did you know Bayshore shopping mall has a…scrunchie vending machine?
OK, laugh but it’s actually super cool.
They are Kokum scrunchies created by a young

girl and her family from the Ottawa-Gatineau region. And they are gorgeous. Go Mya! 💕

My washing machine has died. It’s only five years old. Previous washing machine was three years old, repaired twice then gave up. Both were mid to high end $.
Would vote for any politician who could create a Reliable Appliances Act.
Do we have an expression for Canadians who secretly want to be Americans? Given all the overt American influence in the convoy, it seems like we need a term for this.
When my husband died, I was gifted many
#orchids
. They bloomed two and three times off subsidiary stems. A few of them are still gorgeous, almost a year later.
Shivers.
The haters and the dividers will always make you think you have to choose country over pop, white over black, young over old, etc. etc. You don’t have to choose. You never had to choose.
I never understood why we don’t just create clinics adjacent to ERs — and triage points you in one direction or the other. Then no one ever has to worry if they are being overly cautious in coming to ER.
Coordinate the two. It should not be up to the patient to figure it out.
A new year tradition I started a couple of years ago: review ALL of your subscriptions, including software and streaming subscriptions, etc. Get rid of most of those you do not use regularly. It’s easy to renew. If it turns out you’ve made a mistake.
Grief means mourning your loss every moment of the day, yet simultaneously catching yourself before you text him or call out to him or think to yourself, ‘he’s going to love this’ — then realizing with a sharp inhalation that this is no longer possible.
@OC_Transpo
You did this last year and it makes no sense to have public transit that nobody can use when it’s busy and people need it the most. Hire security/police to mediate crowd control like they do in other cities.
The continued backlog of COVID-19 test results in Ontario is no longer acceptable. At first, was understandable. System capacity takes time to ramp up. Then, supply chain issues, harder to tackle. But now it is processing delays, 6 weeks after pandemic hit. No good excuses left
Middle aged women make the best spies. How do I know? 3 young guys in suits cut in front of me at security on the Hill and the guard passed me over to greet them. Then at lunch several biz men near me had loud conversation abt v sensitive matters. Apparently I’m invisible!
It would be nice if everybody was as thoughtful about information as we are, but the radical right has long realized that pushing out nonsense takes often enough and wide enough actually works. That’s why it’s important we don’t enable them by sharing their ridiculous content.
The irony of this tweet is that it takes social programs to make working possible — accessible childcare spaces, disability supports, schools that include everyone — all the things this government is reducing, thus forcing many parents, moms in particular, OUT of the workforce

Ridiculous abuse of power — and waste of time (they are teenagers, my dude — they don’t listen to anybody). But bonus to learn this important Canadian right:
Subscription-based businesses count on your lethargy and inertia.
Similarly, every few years, I review my insurances and other plans (eg phone, banking, credit cards) and try to get a better deal or more services for the same price.
It is almost always worth your while.
I knew big and baggy was in but these just look shapeless and…sloppy. They say, ‘team Coachella’ not gold medal Canada.
Or am I just old? What do you think?
Happy and relieved to report that my son (with a rare autoimmune condition) received his Covid vaccine booster today!
Proud to be in a country that prioritizes public health and gives precedence to persons with disabilities — even if we don’t get it right all the time.

Hey
#Ottawa
, have you heard of the Owl café on Morrison Drive?
It’s run by persons with

and other developmental disabilities.
You can buy your Christmas chocolates there now as part of their fundraiser. They also sell handmade pottery ornaments which are gorgeous.
Yesterday I spotted a mom with two young kids playing soccer in a bit of field along a roadway (I won’t say where) — that’s what closing the parks does. I’m guessing she’s from high rises nearby. She’s just a mom trying to keep her and her kids healthy and sane

Watched my 12yr old befriend a kid from China in hotel pool. Despite only a few shared English phrases between them, they managed to construct a complex game w a ball, jointly referee it and play w/out conflict for 2+hrs. At the end they shook hands. Faith in humanity restored.
Guy in waiting room: ‘I thought my appointment was 1:30?’
Admin: ‘No, it’s for 2:30’
Guy: ‘My wife said it was for 1:30. I guess she was mistaken’ —clearly irritated w wife and letting us all know.
Dude, you are like 60. Make and keep track of your own appointments already
At Opthamology at CHEO with my kid. A dad and his kid complete their appointment. He asks reception, ‘Do I have to pay anything or anything?’
‘Nooo?’ she says incredulous he would ask.
‘Well, it’s a weird system. You have to pay for teeth but not for eyes.’
He’s got a point
Let’s be clear about something. The protesters can stay for months if they want and protest on the Hill. That’s their right.
But the trucks have to go. The trucks should never have been allowed in the city centre in the first place. It’s unsafe, and it’s unlawful.

I just don’t understand it. Two ‘100 year floods’ in Ottawa in 3 years, tornadoes, we lost 2 mature trees in 2 different wind storms, Calgary floods, Fort McMurray fires, NB, QC floods AND YET leading fed party in polls has 0 climate plan. Ditto
@fordnation
. What will it take?!
My kid just came back from a long scooter ride and asked a very important question:
Why are there no water fountains anywhere?
(He brought a water bottle with him but ran out. No public fountains to be found anywhere along the pathway).

THANK YOU to the beautiful woman at
#JeanTalonMarket
taco stand who was kinder than kind to my autistic son (who was having a mild hissy fit). The gentleness and understanding of total strangers makes all the difference in our travels. It’s increasingly important as he gets older
In our neighborhood, we had a mini convoy harass kids coming home from school who happened to be wearing masks (which was school policy at the time and OC transpo policy at the time). The kids were very intimidated.
What kind of adults hassle *kids* for wearing masks?
At least 1xweek I randomly look at the replies to a female Minister or prominent female journalist — and what they endure regularly would make your skin crawl. I report abusive tweets every few days now and most of the accounts are eventually suspended. If you see hate, report it
It’s been a devastating couple of weeks for our family. My father-in-law is in hospital in BC and is no longer expected to recover (not COVID related). The pandemic has meant my kids and I can’t travel to say our goodbyes or comfort my MIL, making a difficult situation worse.
Stressful day, taking my youngest with autism in for a mandatory COVID test (school exposure). He was in full panic terror mode but a WONDERFUL
@CHEO
nurse talked him through it and she was fast too — he was a champ. I wanted to hug her. Was a difficult day with a positive ending
I’m happy one of my tweets about the convoy has gone crazy viral, but I wish people would notice that a lot of the agitators in the thread have almost no followers. That means they are bots or hired trolls and their sole purpose is to sow division. Please stop engaging with them
It’s a fabulous shot — but you have to ask why it’s so arresting. It’s because you rarely see a woman in an alpha posture so clearly exerting her power amongst a group of high level men in suits — and not all are happy about it.
My kid’s school designed their own

tshirts and the administration subsidized them so kids could buy them at $5 each. They are allowed to wear them as part of their school uniform. ❤️

Just had a big client (who shall remain nameless) finally get around to paying me for work done in OCTOBER. So I’d like to thank all those individuals and institutions who pay their freelancers and consultants in a timely way. We are humans w kids to feed and mortgages to pay too
Subscriptions have a way of creeping up on you; you will be shocked by how many you have. Use your credit card statements to track your subscriptions. I even got rid of things I used regularly to try new things.
Some, I went back to the old, some I was grateful for the new
So I’d say the shared walking/biking pathway between
#BritanniaPark
and
#DeschenesRapids
might need another lane 😂 Notice the walkers have forged their own path alongside the bikes.

Has anyone written about the fact that our Foreign Minister is a woman and a feminist and our International focus has been on gender and women’s rights — that this has made us a particular showy target? All the more reason to stay on the right side of history and human rights
I took my kid and his pal to see
#Frozen2
. At last minute they decided they were ‘too old’ to sit with me so I let them sit a couple of rows behind me. Which meant I looked like the sad middle aged woman who goes to Disney films on her own in the middle of a weekday afternoon 😂
Politics aside, PM Trudeau is an excellent communicator and his unrelenting daily press briefings and openness to media questions is calming and reassuring — demonstrating that there’s a whole big team working hard on keeping Canada safe 🇨🇦
You know what’s fantastic? That extreme racism and xenophobia from the PPC was soundly rejected by Canadian voters and did not even influence the outcome of the election. This bucks the trend elsewhere in the world where extremism has made real gains

Disagree. I’m seeing those personal stories actually hitting home on social and making people take precautions. A dose of fear with a personal lens is what we need for a certain segment of the population that won’t listen to charts and graphs and flattening the curve data
Doctors, please don't spread scary stories about COVID-19 to the general public. Dont tell Facebook, Twitter or that WhatsApp group all about the cases in your hospital. It doesn't help but it does frighten people who don't understand. Not OK.

Had to wait w young woman who was passed out in middle of road near Richmond and Woodroffe today while paramedics came. She was drunk but I couldn’t get her awake long enough to get her off the road. After 20mins or so, she started sobbing: ‘I drink because I’m so sad’ she said
There's a lot of really amazing buildings in NYC, but let me tell you about my favorite — 432 Park.
It's one of the "billionaire row" buildings, but if you know me — luxury isn't my thing.
I love it because it's the tallest F*CK YOU the world will ever see.
