If a literary agent considers your submission, says no and takes the time to explain why, please don't come back and tell us we are wrong / stupid / failing.
The agent's feedback may or may not be useful to you but it was freely given in a spirit of goodwill.

A thread.
What kinds of novels are flying off the shelves?
Should authors write for the market / ignore the market?
What makes a bestseller?
We did some research here at the Kate Nash Literary Agency on what's popular now and on trends and the results were very interesting. 1/
Lots of talk about
#burnout
in publishing industry especially after
@thebookseller
survey.
However no one is yet talking about burnout among authors and I think perhaps they should.
I am thinking a Barnard Castle eye test might just enter the popular lexicon (meaning a lie simply too ludicrous to be believable) & in about 100 years its obscure origins as a phrase will be coming up in pub quizzes.
Cracking potential pub name as well.

Hello
@thesundaytimes
"best books of 2021 -- from every genre"
I can find crime, thrillers, historical fiction, science fiction... but where is your list of the year's best romantic fiction? 🤔
#EverydaySexism
As a literary agent I am very conscious I am in a position of having a coal face view of publishing... but what should I usefully talk about here?
Let me know below and I'll do my best. Mystique in any industry is not a plus.

Sorry for shouting but REAL PUBLISHERS PAY AUTHORS, NOT the other way around! I have today discovered that vanity publishers use "Advance" to mean a payment FROM the author TO the publisher! 😮 In this contract, the author gets a tick box choice of what ££ to pay

If an agent reads your manuscript, gives you editorial feedback, reviews the edited mss -- giving you all this time & expertise for free -- don't get angry with the agent for not offering you rep.
Your mss is good. Keep going. You'll find the right agent!

what are you actually going to do about the

Why is this huge slice of UK popular culture (aka popular bestselling fiction written by women) being systematically ignored?
Given the Twitter outage this weekend, I wrote a piece about women's fiction and the snobbery... and there are a few book recommendations on here. Go read these wonderful stories!
I was asked by
@pubinterns
to share some thoughts and tips for people applying for their first role in publishing. Now, we are an agency, not a publisher, but my comments apply across publishing.

But "every genre" has had a "best books of the year" except it hasn't. Where is the best books list for romantic fiction? I was excited when I saw the "every genre" headline, only to be disappointed.

Heartbreaking email from a writer last night.
She submitted to us using an address of a family member from the South East to hide that she lives in the North.
"I often got ridiculed for my Yorkshire twang and did my best to drop it," she writes. 💔

I don't think people imagine romantic fiction is a genre, it is a genre. Notable for being the second biggest fiction genre (after crime and thrillers).
Have you written a novel, memoir or narrative non-fiction and are looking for the right agent?

And finally, predicting the near future.
Here are the most popular themes answering the question "what themes will be popular in fiction in 2020?"
Overall conclusion: Popular fiction today is reflecting our fears as well as exploring who we are and who we want to be. 11/
The brass necking of the

organisers going ahead with the London Book Fair with so many publishers pulling out is reprehensible.
It’s a significant sum of money for SMEs like us to lose with no official cancellation.

The outstanding problem is that authors are not always seen as stakeholders in the business of publishing & therefore not communicated with effectively.
e.g. at a recent trade conference: Booksellers! Publishers! Let 's converge better to sell more books! Authors not mentioned.
A survey conducted by The Bookseller has found that 54% of authors found the process of publishing their début book negatively affected their mental health, with many saying they struggled with a lack of support.

I don't who these guys are. There are no names on the website. But they are not literary agents.
Agents do NOT charge reading fees or any upfront fees.
Agents do all the upfront work for free & get paid *only when* we have gained you a publishing deal.

As
@KNLitAgency
are entirely WFH, team days when we all get together in person are important! Am prepping for tomorrow's.
Box lid half shut so the team can't see exactly what is in there quite yet. 😇
Opened the front door this morning to throw out my coffee grounds and a young fox appeared, 2 ft in front of me, and stared at me.
I stared back.
I gave a yelp and the fox ran off.
But for a few moments we had eye contact. It feels like we communicated somehow.
🚨News!🚨
We are so excited to share that our very own Kate Nash is shortlisted for Agent of the Year by the Romantic Novelists' Association (

Congratulations

🧵Adding my tuppence-worth to the convo on here in recent days about trust & confidentiality between literary agents & authors.
There ARE protections for authors, including:
1) Copyright. You own the intellectual property to your original work until you agree otherwise.

A writer has sent me two books in the post.
Just 2 books.
No letter or note enc.
Worse, sent to our registered biz address (aka our accountant).
And the books aren't even a genre I rep.
Literary agents have submission guidelines for practical reasons. Please use them.
I'm looking forward to taking part in
@Mslexia
's Agent Extravaganza tomorrow looking at novel pitches of just 100 words.
It's very hard to distill a novel thus, so I'm not looking for plot, just overall concept, themes and lead character(s).

Whether an author considers the market is up to the author but agents and publishers must. So we research.
One place to spot emerging trends in fiction is on the Kindle bestseller charts. We collated data from Kindle UK and here's the pie chart by genre. 5/
Advice from an agent on writing romance: don't fake it.
Romance is serious, it is real life.
It can be funny, it can be difficult.
But it is always balm to the soul (at least in fiction!)
