For weeks the Assembly Public Safety Committee has refused to hear bills to address our state’s fentanyl crisis. Today that changed thanks to pressure we placed on the Legislature to take action & protect our kids. We now have deal to hold a special hearing on Thursday, April 27.

I sounded the alarm months ago about the impact school closures would have on enrollment. But it's important to remember that enrollment was trending down before the pandemic. Many districts have forgotten why they exist: to serve the needs of students & families above all else.

And yes, it is disingenuous to block or damage reasonable housing policy in the name of the environment while some Californians are commuting hours per day (and emitting more carbon) because they cannot afford to live near their job. Meet the new NIMBY, same as the old NIMBY.

We’ve spent $20 billion taxpayer dollars on homelessness since 2018 and our homeless population has skyrocketed. This is the definition of failure. It’s time to stop measuring California’s response to this humanitarian and public health/safety crisis by dollars spent.

JUST IN: California lawmakers in the Assembly Public Safety committee reject @Patterdude ’s AB 18, which would allow people convicted or certain drug crimes, including fentanyl distribution, to be charged w/ voluntary manslaughter or murder. He has asked for reconsideration.

Today the Assembly simultaneously passed legislation to reduce the vote threshold for tax increases ( #ACA1 ) while increasing the vote threshold for taxpayer protections ( #ACA13 ). Thankfully these measures can still be stopped in the Senate or rejected by voters at the ballot box.
