After spending $24 billion taxpayer dollars, California’s homelessness crisis continues to grow.
What’s worse, the state doesn’t even know where the money is going.
I have introduced
#AB2903
to change that. We will never solve homelessness without real accountability.
#SB14
to make human trafficking of a minor a serious felony in California just passed the Assembly 80-0 after previously being voted down in the public safety committee. Thank you
@ShannonGroveCA
for defending victims. This is a rare win for sanity and common sense in our state.
As a parent and school board member, I strive to be a voice for families and students in my community. Today I am announcing my candidacy for State Assembly to do the same in Sacramento. Thank you
@KevinKileyCA
for your endorsement. Visit to learn more.
For the past 5 yrs I’ve had the pleasure of staffing
@KevinKileyCA
on education issues. We worked on bipartisan legislation to expand school choice for low income students and advocated to end school closures. Apparently this is what you get for standing up for kids and families.
I've been removed as Vice Chair of the Education Committee after five years. This is retaliation for speaking out against Newsom's corrupt school policies. Putin would be proud.
The gas tax went up 8% today as Californians head into their 4th of July weekend.
Yet another cost increase imposed by the Supermajority while families struggle to afford life in our state.
And what do they get in return?
Crumbling roads rated 46th worst in the nation.
My audit of homelessness spending is finally out.
My key takeaway: CA has failed to solve its homelessness crisis and it doesn’t even know where the dollars are going. Without more transparency, we won’t see any accountability.
Here are 10 troubling findings from the report: 🧵
Since 2018 our state has spent $20 billion taxpayer dollars on homelessness. During that time chronic homelessness has risen 77% in California. I am requesting a full audit of our spending on homelessness to figure out where the money is going and why we aren’t seeing results.
The Governor is attempting to rewrite history with blatant falsehoods. Schools were never allowed to open locally unless the county they were in met Newsom’s mandated color-tier criteria. He quite literally imposed the longest school closures in the nation.
I ask
@GavinNewsom
about the lessons learned from COVID.
What do we do right/wrong? Did we shut down schools too long?
"We allowed local control. In some cases, yes they waited too. In other cases, they didn't."
He says the state had little ability to determine that.
The
#AD07
election is certified. We won by 1,383 votes and were the only campaign in California to beat an incumbent in the Supermajority. Despite being outspent by $3 million, our grassroots effort was never outmatched. Thank you to everyone who made this victory possible.
The Governor has proposed spending another billion taxpayer dollars on homelessness. First we need an audit of the $20 billion that has already been spent.
2/3 of Californians believe taxes are too high. Almost no one thinks they should be higher. Yet the majority party continues to reject a gas tax suspension and instead attempted to raise taxes on energy suppliers.
Tonight
@FolsomCordova
became the first large district in Sacramento County to adopt a timeline for returning to the classroom. I am so incredibly proud of our District for leading on this issue, putting kids first, and providing options for all families. Can’t wait for Nov. 9th.
#SB14
just PASSED in the Assembly Public Safety Committee after being rejected on Tuesday. I was proud to be in the room with my daughter Addison in support of the bill as a Californian, a legislator, and a parent.
I received a call from Assemblyman Ken Cooley today. He was gracious in defeat and congratulated me on my victory.
Thank you to the voters for entrusting me to serve the people of the 7th Assembly District and represent our community in the Legislature. I am truly honored.
Every district in California needs to take notice. Local politicians and superintendents can no longer unilaterally harm kids by closing their schools.
Milpitas Unified has reversed course and will be in-person next week after consulting with health officials, who said the district officials cannot declare a district-wide quarantine.
All kids should feel safe walking to school. I’ve introduced
#AB257
to keep our most sensitive public spaces safe by prohibiting homeless encampments within 500 ft of schools, daycare centers, parks & libraries. This is modeled after similar measures passed by multiple CA cities.
Human trafficking of a minor is not considered a serious felony in California. Let that sink in.
What’s worse, the Assembly Public Safety Committee doesn’t think it should be.
JUST IN: SB 14, a bill by Sen.
@ShannonGroveCA
(R-Bakersfield) to classify human trafficking of minors as a serious felony & categorize it under CA's three strikes law for re-offenders, failed in the Assembly Public Safety Committee.
2021: Nebraska Senator Justin Wayne (D) tells his colleagues he'll vote against the school choice bill if they agree to send their own kids to public schools.
Your gas taxes are going up again on July 1st and the Legislature just rejected an amendment I supported in the Assembly to stop this increase. Hardworking Californians will continue to pay the highest gas taxes in the country, all while driving on the nation’s 4th worst roads.
I was honored to be officially sworn in today as the State Assemblyman for the 7th Assembly District. It was an amazing experience to have my family on the Assembly Floor with me as I took the Oath of Office. I am excited to get to work for our community and our state!
Schools need to remain open in the new year. Period. The fact that this isn’t assumed shows how little we’ve learned in the past two years. Parents are not going through this again.
The idea that families living paycheck to paycheck can wait a few more months for gas tax relief is so out of touch with reality. Inflation is crushing the budgets of everyday Californians and most of the politicians in Sacramento don’t seem to care.
Today legislators were given yet another chance to suspend the gas tax and provide relief for Californians. This time a handful of Democrats did the right thing and joined Republicans in an effort that should be bipartisan. My opponent was not one of them. It’s time for change.
Today I introduced my first bill.
#AB75
gives voters the chance to reform Prop. 47 in a meaningful way by increasing penalties for serial theft offenses. Our residents & small business owners deserve better, it’s time to restore some accountability in our criminal justice system.
BREAKING: State appellate court issues final ruling halting
@UCBerkeley
from building housing for students & low-income residents in iconic People's Park. Campus blasts decision as "dangerous" expansion of state environmental law and says it will appeal.
My kids attend traditional public schools. Charter public schools are the best accountability mechanism in existence to ensure quality across the board. Competition breeds excellence. Make no mistake,
#AB1316
is not about improving accountability. It will do the exact opposite.
Our top priority has always been keeping kids in school and making sure our classrooms are safe.
Now, with COVID cases declining by 98% since the Omicron peak and updated
@CDCgov
guidance in place, we will lift the statewide school mask requirement this coming Wednesday.
CDPH has finally aligned w/ CDC and rescinded its requirement to regularly test unvaccinated school employees/volunteers. Last month I gathered bipartisan support on our school board for a letter calling on them to take this action. Thanks to everyone who helped us get this done.
On Friday the Redistricting Commission proposed the nonsensical idea of splitting up the City of Folsom into two separate districts. Then on Saturday they barred Folsom residents from calling in to object. It’s pretty hard not to become cynical about this process.
The Governor's Office is "proud" of the billions of taxpayer dollars they're wasting amid skyrocketing homelessness. I was shocked by the attitude of the Governor's appointee during a recent Budget Oversight Committee hearing.
One of my first proposals after joining the Assembly was an audit of homelessness spending in California. Today we got it done. This will give us the information we need to improve our investments, protect taxpayers, restore our public spaces, and get people the help they need.
Our latest TV ad is live! Gas prices are not just putting a dent in family budgets, they are also making inflation worse by increasing the cost of everything we buy. That's why we need new leadership in Sacramento.
#HooverForAssembly
#AD07
Nearly 60% of CA voters support reforming Prop. 47 and restoring accountability. I put forward
#AB75
to do exactly that, but it was rejected today in the Assembly Public Safety Committee. I will continue working to change this, we owe it to our communities to get this right.
My initial thought on this was that fast food chains should start baking bread. But the carve out prohibits that too.
The Governor is willing to crush small businesses as long as they aren’t his friends and political donors. Absolutely ridiculous.
Can any franchisee get an exemption from the $20 minimum wage law or do they need to donate more than $150k to Newsom first?
This crooked deal needs to be investigated.
Good news.
#AB742
has been shelved for the year. This legislation sought to restrict a critical (and nonlethal) law enforcement tool for apprehending violent criminals. Our office stands in strong support of police canines!

Wow -
@GavinNewsom
's standing among California voters has hit an all-time low, with 49% disapproving of his performance as governor, according to a new UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times.
Grateful to be the first State Legislator from Folsom/Granite City since Phillip C. Cohn was elected to the State Senate in 1912. Excited to get to work for our community!
Regarding the “deal” struck on
#SB4
in NR tonight, that is not how public policy should be made. Disingenuous environmental special interests will continue to make our state more expensive & housing less affordable until
#caleg
develops the political will to do what is necessary.
This week I joined hundreds of Californians on the steps of the State Capitol to oppose the passage of 4 bills that will make our communities less safe. Enough is enough.
No this is not satire. The Governor that closed businesses, shut down schools, and banned independent contracting is now pitching California as a bastion of liberty.
NEW: California Gov
@GavinNewsom
is running Fourth of July themed ads in Florida, targeting
@GovRonDeSantis
.
“Freedom is under attack in your state,” Newsom says in the ad. “I urge every Floridian to join the fight…Or join us in California where we still believe in freedom.”
One year ago today I was sworn into the State Assembly. This week I officially filed to run for reelection in 2024.
It’s an honor to represent the 7th Assembly District at the State Capitol. We had a very productive first year. My proposal to audit homelessness spending passed…
This is the right outcome. Avoiding the perception of conflict is important to maintaining the public trust. Thank you to
@ZavalaA
and the rest of the Sacramento press corps for working to hold the Legislature accountable.
JUST IN: Assem. Mia Bonta releases statement saying she will recuse herself from matters directly pertaining to her husband CA Attorney General Rob Bonta’s DOJ.
This comes after I repeatedly asked her at the Capitol if she would as leader of budget committee on public safety.
Today the Assembly Public Safety Committee voted down a bill to make the theft of a firearm a felony. How are we supposed to get serious about gun violence if we can’t even make this common sense change?
The damage to kids caused by school closures will be felt for years to come. That’s why I fought alongside parents/teachers to get our classrooms reopened. Meanwhile, CTA moved the goalposts and fought to keep them closed. The choice is clear for Assembly.
The incumbent for
#AD07
just received $9,700 from the CTA!
If you live in AD 07, make sure you vote for
@joshua_hoover
, the parent backed candidate.
Also, you can help him counter his competitor’s CTA support by contributing to his campaign here:
$75 to fill up my small car’s gas tank last night. If you don’t think this is hurting California families you’re wrong. The Legislature needs to take action now to suspend the gas tax and increase our state’s energy production.
We have spent $20 billion since 2018 and seen our homeless population grow by 77% in CA. Yet the Governor still measures success by “dollars spent.” We won’t see progress until we get serious about accountability.
BREAKING:
@GavinNewsom
today will announce that CA local govts are on track to reduce homelessness 15% by 2025, up from previous estimate of 2%. They can now access $1B in state $. State is also procuring 1200 tiny homes - LA gets 500, Sac 350, San Jose 200, San Diego County 150.

Lots of emotions today. New member training (don’t mind
@Patterdude
’s head) and said goodbye to one of the greatest schedulers the Capitol has ever seen!
Homelessness in California has increased over 23% since 2007 and 30% of the nation’s homeless now reside in our state. Meanwhile, Florida has seen a 46% decline. The status quo isn’t working.
Some eye-catching stats from new federal data:
- 44 people out of every 100,000 in CA are homeless
- CA accounts for 30% of nation’s homeless, 50% of its unsheltered people
- Homelessness rose 23.4% in CA from 2007-22, while it fell 46% in FL
Our state is in desperate need of water, but the Coastal Commission just voted down a major desalination proposal. Meanwhile water storage projects are regularly blocked despite strong support from voters. This defies common sense. We need a better plan than shorter showers.
The idea that shutting down Diablo Canyon is good for the environment is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve heard. If we actually want to improve air quality and expand reliable sources of clean energy, we need to keep Diablo open and expand our investments in nuclear power.
California is once again on the verge of blackouts and yet
@NRDC
&
@SierraClubCA
are demanding that we shut down Diablo Canyon nuclear plant, which provides 9% of our electricity, rain or shine.
The anti-nuclear movement is comprised of anti-civilization nihilists.
Important lessons here:
1. Who you elect to your school board matters, don’t skip that box on your ballot.
2. Ignore students and parents at your own peril.
3. An engaged electorate can effect real change.
4. Elected officials should always know they can be held accountable.
California leads the nation with the highest gas prices and we are the only state where drivers are paying over $6 per gallon.
The Governor could have signed a bill this week to suspend the gas tax and provide relief, but unfortunately the Legislature didn’t put one on his desk.
We are losing over 100 Californians per week to fentanyl poisoning. It is invading our high schools and harming our kids. Yet the Supermajority just rejected an opportunity to fast track bipartisan legislation and address this crisis.
JUST IN: On a party line vote, California lawmakers in the Assembly reject an effort to fast track three fentanyl-related bills that would crack down on dealers.
These (bipartisan) bills either stalled or were rejected by the Assem. Public Safety committee.
For weeks the Assembly Public Safety Committee has refused to hear bills to address our state’s fentanyl crisis. Today that changed thanks to pressure we placed on the Legislature to take action & protect our kids. We now have deal to hold a special hearing on Thursday, April 27.
Our bipartisan bill to limit the use of smartphones in schools just passed the Assembly Education Committee w/ unanimous support. Thank you
@AsmMuratsuchi
for joint authoring this critical legislation to protect and improve the mental health and academic outcomes of our students.
Don’t let the rain stop you from making your voice heard today! I would be honored to earn your vote. Please help us bring more balance and common sense back to the State Capitol.

I sounded the alarm months ago about the impact school closures would have on enrollment. But it's important to remember that enrollment was trending down before the pandemic. Many districts have forgotten why they exist: to serve the needs of students & families above all else.
I got to have a very special guest join me on the Assembly Floor this week. Enjoyed introducing my daughter Addison to my
#caleg
colleagues and she enjoyed being away from her brothers for the day. 🙂🏛️🇺🇸
And yes, it is disingenuous to block or damage reasonable housing policy in the name of the environment while some Californians are commuting hours per day (and emitting more carbon) because they cannot afford to live near their job. Meet the new NIMBY, same as the old NIMBY.
Thankful to have the support of the California Police Chiefs Association in my re-election campaign. Lots of work to do to improve public safety and restore accountability in our criminal justice system.
CPCA is proud to endorse
@joshua_hoover
for re-election to Assembly District 7. We appreciate all Assemblymember Hoover did in his first year to protect victims and businesses from theft and violent crime. He has truly earned our full support!
We’ve spent $20 billion taxpayer dollars on homelessness since 2018 and our homeless population has skyrocketed. This is the definition of failure. It’s time to stop measuring California’s response to this humanitarian and public health/safety crisis by dollars spent.
Today
@AsmRepublicans
unveiled our plan to improve public safety in CA. It starts by restoring accountability in our criminal justice system. I spoke about
#AB75
, my bill to increase penalties on serial theft offenders. We owe it to our communities to put a stop to rising crime.
"Your kids deserve what every fancy family gets," Gov. Newsom says at today's budget reveal, pointing to $3.4 billion for before and after school programs and $937 million for arts and music programs.
The wealth tax has been stopped for now, but the Legislature should act quickly to take it off the table for good. We discussed why this proposal would be so devastating for California's taxpayers and economy last week on the
@pointoforderpod
.
A decade after voters approved significant investments in water storage no progress has been made to prepare our state for persistent droughts. Today my colleagues and I called on Gov. Newsom to cut the red tape and get these projects built. Californians have waited long enough.
HAPPENING NOW:
@AsmRepublicans
are gathering along a levee near the American River to call on the state to invest more in water storage. 💦
“It’s a failure of leadership.” - Assembly Minority Leader
@J_GallagherAD3
(R-Yuba City)
Excited for new possibilities in 2022. I’m optimistic about what we can do together to restore sanity and common sense in California. We can start by rejecting the partisanship and polarization that defined the last year. And when we disagree, I hope we can do so respectfully.
Going after fentanyl dealers should be a slam dunk, bipartisan issue. If we can’t vote to protect our kids, it shouldn’t be called the public safety committee.
JUST IN: California lawmakers in the Assembly Public Safety committee reject
@Patterdude
’s AB 18, which would allow people convicted or certain drug crimes, including fentanyl distribution, to be charged w/ voluntary manslaughter or murder.
He has asked for reconsideration.
Today the Assembly simultaneously passed legislation to reduce the vote threshold for tax increases (
#ACA1
) while increasing the vote threshold for taxpayer protections (
#ACA13
). Thankfully these measures can still be stopped in the Senate or rejected by voters at the ballot box.
Another major city backs this common sense change. Now we need the Legislature to do the same.
The Assembly Public Safety Committee already voted down my bill to protect our students, but it’s never too late to change course.
Citing security and safety concerns, San Jose's mayor and others want to change city law to ban unhoused encampments near all public and private schools and daycares.
If we are serious about reducing inflation and making our state more affordable for California families we need to take meaningful action to suspend the gas tax, curtail government spending, and repeal harmful policies like
#AB5
.
Thankful to see our bipartisan audit of homelessness spending in California getting national attention. It’s critical that we get to the bottom of the billions of taxpayer dollars our state is allocating to address this crisis, all while homelessness continues to skyrocket.
My ballot arrived today, I humbly ask for your support in my run for State Assembly. It would be the honor of a lifetime to represent our community in the Legislature. Here is my full ballot statement, you may notice that I was the only candidate in this race to submit one:
