Last breakdown of the season as we wrap up another year. As always, thank you for reading/subscribing and I’ll be back late summer attempting to figure out who plays for who now
The Zach Edey Era at Purdue has taught me one overwhelming fact: casual CBB fans think foul calls should somehow always miraculously be completely even
Just disband these tournaments. Also a hilariously poor job of reading the room when the NIT board pulled autobids from midmajors- now they can hardly get a tournament together
NEWS: Pepperdine forward Jevon Porter tells
@On3sports
he plans to enter the transfer portal.
The 6-11 sophomore averaged 15.8 points and 5.7 rebounds this season. Younger brother of NBA champion Michael Porter Jr. of the Nuggets.
Couple of interesting nuggets on Mike Woodson’s contract in here. He would be owed $12.6 million if Indiana was to let him go — but in a unique wrinkle, the school can pay that in $1 million annual payments if it so chooses. A Bobby Bonilla-esque payout, if you will.
Well that’s a wrap. See you in late summer with some preseason conference previews. It was great to be back writing and thanks for all the positive interactions throughout the year. Hopefully next season is a little more normal.
As much as people love Raftery, I feel like he’s somehow underrated. Not just a catchphrase guy. Makes salient in game points and doesnt miss much for being 77
Glad CBB is back, but I’m also relieved opening night is over. Massive, massive slates like this make me feel like I’m simultaneously watching everything and nothing
I’ve watched Brandin Podziemski play about 40 minutes of basketball and I’m floored. I thought he’d be a glorified spot shooter but he’s smooth on the ball, mixes it up on the glass. Needs some work defensively, but he’s an incredible, complete scorer
FRIDAY NEWS DUMP: Starting tomorrow, my blog will be subscription based. With kids (always blame it on the kids), I no longer have time to dedicate to a “hobby” without compensation. Super cheap, $10 for the whole season- I figure I’m worth half a Pomeroy. Thanks for your support
Just filed my last preview of the season for
@ActionNetworkHQ
. Thanks for following along as I made the switch from personal blog to national outlet. Really appreciated all the positive feedback throughout the year
After all these years you'd think Kenny Smith would at least do a modicum of research before the tournament. It's a slap in the face to those that actually follow the game and embarrassing for him professionally that he remains so willfully ignorant
People are giving me guff about Trae Young, but my hottest CBB take is that Tom Izzo is the most overrated coach in the history of modern college basketball
I, for one, am thankful for this 40 minute break between games. Really allows us to get inside the head of Kenny and Chuck, two of the finest CBB minds around
This is what they said about Jay Wright. Until he won a title. This is what they said about Roy Williams. Until he won a title. This is what they said about Jim Boeheim. Until he won a title. This is what they said about...
“Hmm, lots of people are watching women’s basketball. Must be because Jim Boeheim is no longer coaching in the men’s game. Not because of this generational scorer.”
Men’s college basketball is a very flat, relatively unappealing product right now. Coaching legends are gone or diminished. No star players breaking through.
Eddie Lampkin has said he’s revealing his commitment decision when he gets 500 comments on his latest IG reel.
He’s currently at 357 at last check, so this announcement could be coming soon. Hoyas have been interested.
UNM with one of the most eye opening wins of the season. We knew the Lobos had firepower, but winning a halfcourt execution game against an elite defensive team where no one wins is the definition of a statement
A few notes on a pretty big game tomorrow. Thank you for reading and following along with me as I got back into the game in the weirdest season ever. Already looking forward to next year
Indiana State’s NCAA tournament case is basically reliant on the committee just believing they’re a good team.
Entire résumé is built on what it did in the Valley… sweeping Bradley and going 1-2 vs Drake. Have an awful loss to Illinois State. 23 of 28 wins vs Q3/Q4/non-D1.
😬
This puts a bow on another season with about 2,000 games previewed. Thanks for following along as always and I’ll see you in preview season in the fall after I decompress from the CBB grind
Rutgers is such a nightmare matchup for IU to have after Purdue. Literally the worst possible scheduling draw outside of having to go to the RAC to play
Devastating news. Had always felt that college basketball coverage was mostly superficial but never knew how to fully express that until I read Neil’s writing. Unquestionably the biggest influence on the way I watch and write about the game
Iverson Molinar said Texas Tech ran an unorthodox defense in how the team tried to eliminate him from the game:
"I haven't seen that type of defense yet in college. Just give them props for what they did today on defense."
As much as people love Raftery, I feel like he’s somehow underrated. Not just a catchphrase guy. Makes salient in game points and doesnt miss much for being 77
48 hours ago NMSU was waxing GCU in a raucous atmosphere in front of the Havocs. They had every reason to lose this game in Seattle. Aggies are very legit
Fantasizing about being asked to referee a tournament game here in Bloomington and not calling a single charge. The crowd hoists me upon their shoulders and I'm carried all the way to Nick's
I will now be taking questions on the GameStop situation. I used to smoke cigarettes in the alley with GameStop employees when I worked at an Olive Garden, so I have some unique insight to offer
A plethora of interesting games today, but I think I got to everyone's questions. Me and my fragile ego thank you for sending them in and for listening to my opinions!
Charles McClelland, the NCAA tournament selection committee chair, was just asked about Indiana State on a call with reporters. After giving the generic answer that they’ll garner conversation in the room, he specifically said the committee is aware that starter Jayson Kent
SDSU just completed the most clinical and routine 23 point destruction in a conference tournament game I can recall seeing. Took 1 hour and 38 minutes lol

Took a look at tomorrow night’s championship game. It’s been a great season and a major, major thank you to everyone who signed up and supported in my first year of doing this as a subscription service. I’ll see you again in conference preview season
I’ll be adding several more games to this article tonight and tomorrow morning. There’s also a note on my season long plans after a weird personal offseason
While you enjoy CFB this AM, I would like to drop a note regarding my plans for this CBB season. First, I won’t be releasing any conf previews this year, as I won’t be able to devote as much time to CBB thanks to the impending arrival of our 2nd child
