I am Joaquรญn Beltrรกn, software engineer and community organizer, proud son of immigrant parents who came to the U.S. for the American dream, and fighter for our community's health and prosperity. Officially announcing my run for Congress in Southeast LA.
Brought a family member to the ER and this is the line tonight to check in. Public officials falsely claim victory over the pandemic but we have truly capitulated leaving the burden on our families and healthcare workers. From a HCW tonight, โpeople donโt know whatโs going on.โ
If everyone wore a high-qualify mask for the next two weeks, imagine how quickly we could lower transmission levels. It would be like a hammer of viral suppression that would save so many lives. Where is the call to action from our federal and local officials to get this done?
Seems no one in our government is asking why America's greatest competitor, China, is taking COVID absolutely serious to prevent infection... even after nearly 3 full years of data on lowered life expectancy, long covid, and increased risks of diabetes, heart attack, and stroke.
We really are providing SARS-CoV-2 a global Petri dish as we allow the virus to keep transmitting and mutating. The only thing that should be going viral right now are indoor mask mandates, indoor clean air infrastructure updates, and PSAs on the virus and how it transmits.
If you are wearing a mask in indoor public settings, I cannot thank you enough. The reason we aren't in even worse shape is because of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Stay strong, be a role model. Let's keep wearing high-quality masks indoors to protect each other. ๐ท
The herd immunity people were wrong, the urgency of normal people were wrong, the vaccine-only people were wrong... let's cut the nonsense, we need updated vaccines, ventilation, filtration, high-quality masks, and ubiquitous testing.
#vaccineplus
Met a fellow masker while shopping.
Me: Thanks for masking.
Her: I work with kids. They have COVID all the time.
Me: Oh no, that's not good. Have you heard of Corsi-Rosenthal Boxes?
Her: I haven't.
Me: Less than $100 to build, more effective than HEPA filters.
Her: ๐ก๐
CEO of Pfizer tests positive *TWICE* within 40 days. This is the new normal our public officials are creating by only focusing on pharmaceuticals and giving up on source control with masks and not urgently implementing clean indoor air with filtration and ventilation.
When you let the virus roam free and it kills everyone that it can and disables the rest, this is called failure. The year is 2022 and we are in the third year of the pandemic โ we do not lack the science, we do not lack the data โ we lack the political will to take action.
Sister-in-law took a SARS-2 rapid test with symptoms and the test came back negative. She thought to herself, โthis canโt be.โ She Swabbed her throat and did the test again, positive.
Took grandma to a vascular doctor today who didnโt wear a mask and sneezed in the room with us, we both wore N95s.
Me: Are you planning to wear a mask since cases are increasing?
Doc: I donโt like wearing masks.
Me: COVID causes vascular issues.
Doc: Yes, it does.
Me: ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ
The flight attendant had a surgical mask and I offered her a KN94 as an upgrade which she was really happy to accept and loved the black color, her favorite. The guy across the aisle then asked, โcan I get one too?โ
โYeah, man you got it.โ
Community care is the future.
After 3.5 years of helping to keep my mom from a SARS-2 infection, she finally tested positive. I immediately checked her labs with her doc to get her Paxlovid and introduced the doctor to metformin studies that showed risk reduction for long covid, she prescribed both.
The Novavax vaccine is so good itโs worked against every dominant variant to date without updating its antigen. Think about that level of effectiveness, the delays in approval, and the continuous suppression of this vaccine to be approved far behind Pfizer/Moderna. Unreal.
We did it! Mask requirements are back in healthcare settings in LA County as of today Dec 29th! Thank you to everyone who has been tirelessly working on protecting our community for months, you made this happen!
Please share far and wide that there are no monoclonal antibody treatments available. SARS-2 has mutated to the point that our monoclonals no longer work. Our goal should be to not get COVID and avoid reinfections. Wear an N95 as SARS-2, FLU, and RSV are surging.
Today, FDA is announcing that bebtelovimab is not currently authorized for emergency use in any U.S. region because it is not expected to neutralize Omicron subvariants BQ.1 and BQ.1.1:
The normalization of COVID transmission is the normalization of debilitating long COVID. We are creating the long hauler generation with an ever-increasing number of people affected by COVID. We need to stop playing with this virus and act on a vision toward containment.
Iโm so confused on how weโve normalized roughly 3,000 weekly COVID deaths in the U.S. and the untold suffering of long covid patients which are increasing in numbers with continued transmission. How is this okay?
While shopping at the grocery store, I say to the woman next to me wearing a KN95:
"Great mask... you're one of the smart ones. Thank you for wearing one."
She says, "I have cancer. Thank you for wearing a mask."
I thanked a coffee shop staff member for wearing their mask a few months back and she told me something I'll never forget, "I can't afford to get COVID."
Whether it's one's life, health, or livelihood, no one can afford to get COVID โ this should guide our pandemic policy.
We need a CDC independent from the administration and corporate influence so they can focus on the science and its mission of preventing and controlling disease.
2.5 years after the introduction of SARS-CoV-2, we are fooling ourselves if we think infections are okay as we only are beginning to learn of the long-term health impacts.
Transmission is high, my friends. Our government has normalized high transmission and it's up to us to keep each other safe at this moment. Wear a high-quality mask (N95/KN95/KF94), take activities outdoors and open windows, add indoor filtration, and get vaccinated. Stay safe.
Which airline is going to lead on masking? Youโll get lots of business from people who protect themselves against COVID and have a healthy crew so you can keep flying!
More than 80% of children have had COVID since June of this year, largely due to reopening schools without the proper health mitigations as only 20% had COVID in Feb 2021. The long-term health impacts will be staggering for this generation. Letโs not normalize repeat infections.
I wish I could automatically follow everyone who is wearing a mask to protect themselves and others. You are making a huge difference. Iโm so grateful to you and so are the people in your lives who see how much you care. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
How many infections will the average person have to get until quality of life is at a breaking point for our federal COVID response to stop normalizing mass infection?
Itโs been 10 days since
@CDCDirector
tested positive for COVID. I hope she is doing okay and I hope we get an update soon. I also hope that it is quite evident that 5 days is not enough of an isolation period and a dangerous expectation of when people should return to work.
Guess what, if we had been working to contain COVID we would have the infrastructure to contain monkeypox. Itโs time to take public health serious in this country. Enough with the games.
Itโs never been a good idea to go to school sick, it is an inhumane policy to normalize mass reinfection of a multi-systemic, vascular and organ damaging, immune-dysregulating disease.
In a turnaround from 2020โs strict stay-at-home COVID protocols, students can now go to class even if they test positive, Oakland school district officials said.
Wow record-setting SARS-2 daily deaths in Sweden. The poster child for the Great Barrington Declaration that propagandized herd immunity via infection. The pandemic is NOT over.
Bringing my grandma to emergency room.
Me: whatโs your masking policy?
Them: you donโt have to wear one.
Me: how about for healthcare workers?
Them: same, they donโt have to wear one.
Us: ๐ท๐ท
If the monkeypox response is going to be a vaccine-only approach when available doses are low and as we continue to have exponential growth, then we will not get ahead of the outbreaks in schools and we will get further away from containment. We need a comprehensive strategy.
The greatest lie in this pandemic was that working to contain this virus and the economic health of our communities were competing ideas. In fact, they are intrinsically linked together. People being healthy creates a stronger economy.
Iโm sorry everyone. This is not the pandemic response we were promised. If you feel betrayed, you are not alone. We are in year four now and this is all so tragic to experience the negligence and apathy from officials who need to be leading but choosing to fail. We need better.
Yesterday was the busiest day for commercial aviation that weโve ever tracked. We tracked 134,386 commercial flights on 6 July and today is shaping up to be another busy day. More than 20,000 flights are in the air right now.
Germany is currently experiencing its fastest rate of COVID ICU admissions in the last year... faster than last winter's surge. There are a lot of "pro-spread" evangelists/trolls... don't listen to them, look at the data โ it speaks for itself. Get ready for this fall/winter.
Apparently my parents are watching the SOTU in Spanish and called me to share their shock at Biden saying โthe economy has never been as good as it is now.โ They decided to shut off the tv after that, โheโs just lying to us while weโre struggling here.โ
Guy in car: What are you protesting?
Me: We are protesting to keep masks in healthcare because people should not be getting sick in hospitals, they should be getting better.
Guy in car: I disagree.
Me: You disagree, so you think people should be getting sick in hospitals? Ok.
I feel so bad for the over 80% of children that have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 and will be reinfected because our decision-makers prefer the optics of saying we kept schools open than acting on the urgency of making schools safer with indoor clean air as a pre-requisite.
@CDCDirector
Things you did but failed to mention:
โ Paxlovid
โ Rebound
โ Didnโt use N95
โ Isolated for 18 days
What should happen:
โ Free N95s
โ Ubiquitous Free Testing
โ Paid Sick leave / Longer Isolation
โ Indoor Clean Air Infrastructure
โ Investments in Next Gen Vaccines
After 2.5 years we still need a mass public service educational campaign on COVID transmitting through aerosols, the impact viral load can have on severity, and the reason for protection measures like high-quality masking, ventilation, and air filtration.
COVID has been the largest mass casualty event in the history of the United States. We should be dealing with it with the full force of the U.S. government because it is a war that we are losing and it is a war our families and communities need us to win.
When on the cusp of the second pandemic becoming blatantly obvious, why not bring back mitigation efforts that would help to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and Monkeypox?
As of Oct 2022, 96% of Children have been infected by SARS-2. When Biden took office, this number was roughly 20%. In less than two years, this administration and CDC will have managed to implement a pandemic policy that resulted in nearly 80% of children infected with SARS-2.
Iโm at the hospital after the
@LAPublicHealth
Commission as I was followed and harassed for about half a mile by two individuals who attended public comment and waited for me to go downstairs. As they harassed me, I got hit by a car, driver fled. Getting checked out now.
When Iโm in a moving car, I wear a seatbelt. When Iโm indoors in a public setting during a pandemic, I wear a mask. Masks and seatbelts are context-driven protections that are just common sense.
People are dying and becoming disabled from an airborne virus during this ongoing airborne pandemic and our government has dismantled public health to the point that now more airborne pathogens are causing more harm.
White House: โNo comment.โ
Walgreens tracker now unavailable as the last available data showed the U.S. having the highest positivity rate of the pandemic. โThe pandemic is overโ is a straight-up manufactured lie that is resulting in ever-increasing disability and death that should have been preventable.
President Biden and his advisors have no clue of the political earthquake โthe pandemic is overโ will have on Dems and Inds. You just donโt mess with peopleโs health and you donโt gaslight them about it, you just donโt that and especially after promising to end the pandemic.
It is mind-blowing that we have the means to contain COVID transmission in this county but we donโt because we lack the political will to do it. Completely unacceptable in the year 2022.
To the global leaders that lie to your people that the pandemic is over. Japan just broke its record for most COVID deaths in a day. The pandemic is not over, it is getting worse.
While we were protesting to keep masks in healthcare, this bus driver stopped the bus, opened the doors, and then asked us: โcan I get one of those masks?โ
Yes you can! Here is an N95 mask! ๐ทโค๏ธ
#ProtectWorkers
#MasksInPublicTransit
The state of our healthcare system is a cumulative result of staff shortages from healthcare workers that have died / left from burnout and or long covid, lowered health baselines of patients from COVID and lack of proper care the last 2.5 years, and lack of COVID containment.
โIn the last hour of my telemedicine urgent care shift I have only seen COVID patients.โ
A betrayal from our public officials who have promoted mass denial and mass reinfection as theyโve significantly reduced testing, resources for treatments and financial support, and data.
Iโm in a room of 12 patients, with only three of us masking, I ask one of the healthcare workers to bring masks to offer to the patients. She leaves the box outside the door. I grab the box and offer them to the patients, more than half asked for a mask.
@lapublichealth
Iโm wearing an N95 everywhere, even indoors with people close to me if I know they donโt consistently wear a mask in public or are around those who donโt, and Iโll be getting the updated Novavax when itโs available.
The obvious economic advantages to masks during a pandemic is there are more people alive, more people healthy, more businesses fully staffed and thus more participants in the overall economy. Being anti-mask results in economic instability/weakness. I prefer a strong economy.
SARS-CoV-2 is ruthless. My brother who is in his mid-30s, very much in-shape, fully vax and boosted, has now had COVID three times. Heโs taking Paxlovid, so hopefully he feels better soon but wow 6 points of prior immune responses still not enough to stop transmission.
I can't believe that our government who is supposed to watch out for our best interest does not accelerate investments into clean indoor air, ubiquitous accessible PCR testing, free N95s, and in better vaccines. We can't keep normalizing SARS-2 infections. It is inhumane.
COVID: data showing variants are more transmissible than ever and that repeat infections lead to increasing rates of long covid.
CDC: Pretending the pandemic is over is now official policy.
Me: I'm running for Congress.
Uber driver: Just don't touch the Palestine issue, it's very sensitive.
Me: I'm very outspoken about Palestinian liberation.
Uber driver: Okay, in that case, you are going to win. I will tell everyone I know in Long Beach to vote for you.
