I’m all for the “physical media is the only way to own content” narrative and will back it up personally and professionally every day, but the most troubling thing about HBO Max is the films they are removing aren’t even on disc, mostly, and if they are, those discs are subpar

I’m all for movie theaters succeeding in 2024 but one movie occupying 43% of screens in the US is absurd, not to mention that if you add INSIDE OUT 2 screens to those for DEADPOOL and Disney has well over half of the screens in the country which might as well be a monopoly

The real story here is that this 215 minutes was shot, and is being screened, on 70mm. That’s 26 reels of 70mm, which is about 300lbs of film. Can’t wait to watch this at @TheNYFF

Hey, so a little @letterboxd update re: adult films. They're coming "early next week" and you'll be able to opt-in to see them and make lists, etc. There's a lot of films, pretty much all of the heavy hitters, and the curation was a concerted group effort that I'm v proud of.

the fallacy that nobody can see anything if it isn’t on VOD immediately following, or simultaneously with, a theatrical run is bogus. People had plenty of chances to see this in theaters, both in color and black and white, and it will absolutely be made available to view at home.

Gena Rowlands was a once in a lifetime icon and she knew it. I had the fortune of seeing her once at a screening of A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE and after the film she refused to wait in line for the ladies room and just walked right into the men’s room, all confidence. RIP

It sucks that people aren’t seeing FURIOSA (because it’s great, not because $$$) but the flip side of a dearth of massive movies being released, for whatever reason, is that an indie like IN A VIOLENT NATURE can open on 1500 screens and make 2 mil which used to never happen.

I spent enough of my life working in movie theaters and film distribution to know that boycotting LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL isn’t going to accomplish anything but making indie films, especially genre, harder to see in theaters — no excuse for AI, but those changes come elsewhere

It feels like we are getting further and further from giving movies, and their fans, a fighting chance. Theaters are an unpredictable experience, theatrical windows are increasingly dictated by opening weekend gross, failure seems to not only be an option but likelihood.

Tired of repeatedly seeing home video collectors vilified for wanting, and expecting, the best presentation in 2023. If the source is viable, there’s no reason to not release new films on UHD, regardless of if you like it. And no, “costs” don’t count for billion dollar companies.

As someone who worked years as a projectionist and a film programmer, few things suck as much as not getting a print or drive in hand in time for the screening and “the show must go on” etc but honesty goes a long way, be upfront with the audience and avoid embarrassment for all

Someone in my BLINK TWICE screening shouted “I see dead people” as soon as Haley Joel Osment appeared on screen and that was the least obnoxious thing for 103 minutes — as much as I want theaters to survive, if not thrive, I really wish a lot of these people would stay home
