Applications for heat pumps under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme are up 40% on Jan 2023💫 = people are going ahead with upgrading their gas boilers despite huge lobbying from gas industry & confused Government approach to clean heat market mechanism 📈

Heat pump grant applications up 40% in January at 1,973, versus Jan 2023 But still below the big spike in October that saw 3,207 applications Either way, long way from the pace needed for 600,000 heat pump installations a year by 2028

Labour's North Sea pledge 💭 There's no black and white choice between more North Sea gas vs importing more The N. Sea is running out, whatever your policy on it. And if gas demand stays high, that means importing more. Luckily for us...

Huge news from the US 🇺🇸 in 2022: - Heat pump sales beat gas boilers for the first time (53% of all heating systems) - EV sales up 55% Could be IRA in action, but was only passed in August So more likely a response to Ukraine & world going green?🌎

New analysis (via @guardian ) shows 1.5 million employees in low carbon, renewable and environmental industries in 19/20 @ONS had us at 202,000 🤯 Low carbon jobs are flying under the radar & benefits of net zero are being under-reported at every level...

2) Clark suggests what is stopping manufacturers & consumers moving to heat pumps is "there is something fundamentally wrong with the technology" This is not substantiated with evidence - likely because study after study has shown heat pumps to be efficient & effective. E.g.:

23% of electricity bills are due to environmental and social levies compared to just 2% of gas bills. Many see rebalancing these levies as crucial to accelerating clean heat. New blog on @ECIU_UK presents some options for how these could be done...

The Govt's target is 95% clean power by 2030 and 100% by 2035 North Sea is running out of gas, whatever your policy on it So unless we phase out gas from grid, we'll just be more reliant on foreign gas imports Surely Jenrick isn't advocating for that?

Lots of talk re onshore wind and food security *NEW* @ECIU_UK shows 45GW onshore wind would cover just 0.02% of UK land or 3,400x less than farmed land so, the idea that onshore wind decreases food security just doesn't stack up.

The first heat pump was built in 1856, and have been in UK homes for decades They work well in colder climes - half of all households in Norway have one: And newer models make the same amount of noise as the average library:

& the science is clear: net zero is not an arbitrary target IPCC (UN body of top scientists with reports agreed by all governments) stated that to have a 66% chance of limiting global warming to 1.5C ...net zero by 2050 is essential.

1) Jenrick claims 2050 net zero target, passed in 2019, was "nodded through Commons with fewer than 90 minutes of debate". Additional context: "Reaching Net Zero by 2050" was on page 1 of 2019 Tory manifesto Dozens of Parliamentary debates on net zero have taken place since.

As customers struggle with high energy bills from volatile gas prices, policies to lower gas demand should be a top Govt priority. Any delay to rolling out heat pumps (& those calling for one) risks worsening our energy security by keeping us tied into gas for longer. ENDS

*NEW* regardless of our Government's policy, the rest of the world is moving to heat pumps if the UK's heating industry doesn't do the same, then we could miss out on £65m worth of exports each year the writing's on the wall...

Some of the gas boiler lobby is keen to tell you that heat pump costs won't fall e.g. in today's @Telegraph (& Ross Clark says the same in same paper) independent academic studies think otherwise... @UKERCHQ study reckons costs will fall by up to a quarter by 2030👀

5) Govt's own advisors and *ahem* Govt itself have analysed economic impacts of net zero OBR: *costs of NOT zero could be double the costs of reaching it* & reliance on gas plus future crises every 10y adds 13% GDP to public debt by 2050

V big from the Office for Budget Responsibility.... *Costs of NOT zero could be double the costs of reaching it* They find keeping relying on gas & crisis similar to today's every 10y (v possible as gas = volatile) adds 13% GDP to public debt by 2050

More than 50% nitrogen dioxide - air pollution linked to respiratory and cardiovascular issues - in central London comes from gas boilers🤯 & as traffic pollution continues to fall, this % will likely rise ULEZ + electrified heat = better air quality🫁

5) Clark: "the devices cost too much to run, too" What's the evidence? -OVO offers a tariff that makes them the same price to run as gas -more heat pump users report satisfaction with running costs (67%) compared to gas boilers (59%) 🧐 & that's with levies more on elec vs gas
