There’s no bounce in German infection rates. Assume he’s talking about the reproduction rate which rose to 1.0 on Monday - now back down to 0.75 Based on data collected last week. German experts are v concerned about second wave tho no sign yet.

Sobering update from the Robert Koch Institute this morning. The reproduction rate is 0.9 ( the figure fluctuates but keeping it below 1 is considered crucial and it was at 0.7 when govt decided to ease restrictions ). Death rate has risen to 3.2%

I'd say good morning but...Germany's third wave has begun says government's health adviser. 14,000+ new infections in 24 hrs. Vaccination programme still slow. Could be mid April before GPs allowed to administer jabs. Tough 3 or 4 months still ahead says Merkel.

Demonstrators placed a burnt out Russian tank in front of the Russian Embassy in Berlin, its gun pointing at the front door. Thousands of people expected here later to show solidarity for Ukraine. The atmosphere is sombre, people standing quietly staring at the tank.

A 93 yr old former SS concentration camp guard has been found guilty of facilitating the murders of more than 5000 people. Bruno Dey worked at Stutthof in what was then occupied Poland. He was 17 at the time so tried in a youth court which handed down a 2 yr suspended sentence

More bad news from W Germany where more than 80 now confirmed dead. Overnight a reservoir overflowed, thousands evacuated downstream. Rescuers trying to reach people by boat in one village where houses collapsed overnight. Terrible times here - and many people still missing

It hasn’t received much attention over the weekend so you may have missed this awful story - 18 people found dead ( suffocated according to police ) in the back of a lorry in Bulgaria. They’re thought to have been from Afghanistan, being smuggled to Serbia

Merkel rather moving today re the loneliness endured by people in care homes who can't have visitors. These people in their 80s & 90s she said built our country and wealth of today. They are as much Germany as their children and grandchildren.

This trial matters so much - in many ways. But most of all for the families who lost loved ones. This woman told me her son was detained and never came home. It was more than a year before she learnt he’d been tortured to death - at the hands of the Assad regime. #koblenztrial

'I did nearly drown once' I asked what happened, expecting a childhood accident. 'It was on the way to Germany' She came as a refugee five yrs ago, via the Med. 50 people on a boat made for 9. It overturned but she survived thanks to a life vest & the ship which rescued her

Germany has added the whole of the United Kingdom to the list of countries it considers corona risk areas. As of midnight on Friday, anyone entering the country will be expected to quarantine for 14 days unless they test negative within 48 hours of travel or upon entry.

German politicians held a minute’s silence before today’s session in German Parliament. Bundestag President: ‘Germany is highly indebted to Queen Elizabeth II. We mourn a great Stateswoman. Elizabeth did a lot for the complete reconciliation of Germany and GB after the war.’
