Like a message in a bottle, a blog post I wrote from Berlin four years ago reached a 97-year-old Jewish woman on the other side of the globe, in Australia. In the middle of the pandemic, we began to share a story that connects us

Merkel is asked (at a tech conf): Do you use smart technology at home or do you switch on the washing machine yourself?
Merkel: My husband does the laundry.
Yes, Merkel wore her wrap bought in the US 23 years ago to the Salzburger Festspiele for the 4th time and anyone who has a complaint knows exactly where they can file it.

Angela Merkel will include Olaf Scholz in her G20 Rome summit bilaterals including a sit-down with Joe Biden, a "historic" move aimed at paving the way for a smooth transition of power in Berlin, German govt sources say

After UEFA said Munich cannot light up its match stadium in rainbow colors in support of gay rights, Berlin, Cologne and Frankfurt say they'll step in with displays at their biggest arenas
This 100 yo ad for a Jewish-owned clothing shop forced to close in '38 only recently came to light in Gelsenkirchen, Germany when the building next door was torn down. Debate raging how best to preserve it with construction plans already approved h/t Weiße Rose Gesellschaft
My dad, who spent every day of the last 5 years opposing Trump in his politically mixed Florida retirement community, was hospitalized Thursday before the election result came through. He's now awake enough for my sister to give him the Biden news & gave her hand a tight squeeze
Well done, Berlin. These trash cans popping up at parks allow you to easily donate your deposit bottles to collectors without them having to dig through the garbage
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock accepts carnival season prize and jokes: "I wanted to come as a l/Leopard. But then I was afraid the chancellery would for weeks not grant me permission to travel."
2 years ago OTD a press attachée would spill coffee all over my notebook & Adam Driver would spring up to find towels to clean up the mess & I didn't even really mind

Of the 2021 news images that will stick with me, Merkel in hiking boots surveying the damage in the flood-stricken village of Schuld together with state leader Malu Dreyer, who lives with MS, is very high on the list

With a standing ovation & Beethoven, Berlin pays tribute to Auschwitz survivor Anita Lasker-Wallfisch for 3 decades of Holocaust education, in a beautiful program by her children Maya & Raphael, who carry her legacy forward

Germany's 1st person to be immunized against coronavirus, on the eve of the official start, is 101-year-old Edith Kwoizalla, born around the time of the 3rd wave of the Spanish Flu
Another choice Merkel quote: "It's no problem at all if a man wears the same dark-blue suit 100 days in a row but if wear the same blazer 4 times in 2 weeks, I get letters in the mail."
By my count Angela Merkel has worked with 4 US presidents, 5 British prime ministers, 4 French presidents and 8 Italian premiers, but only 1 Queen

20 years ago today, Germany's conservative, scandal-plagued CDU jumped over its shadow, as they like to say here, & elected Angela Merkel its new leader. The party, the country & Europe haven't been quite the same since
In case it's useful, a few points about Ursula von der Leyen as seen from Berlin:
- Yes, her defense ministry is seen as scandal-plagued, with major equipment problems & a handful of sleaze allegations.
This was Auschwitz survivor Eva Kor's last tweet before she died yesterday aged 85 & I can't seem to get it out of my head. She retained a lightness & generosity of spirit in her final years that was utterly disarming & humbling. May her memory be a blessing to all who loved her.
Can you believe that today I can get chicken McNuggets near Auschwitz? That would have been wonderful 75 years ago. They taste the same in every country and were delicious

Berlin was liberated from the Nazis 75 years ago today. This new website walks you through that time with extraordinary pictures of Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz & Sachsenhausen concentration camp layered on top of contemporary images
"I deeply regret that President Trump has not conceded his defeat, since November and again yesterday," Merkel said. "Doubts about the election outcome were stoked and created the atmosphere that made the events of last night possible."

Fans of The Queen's Gambit, German history aficianados: I went out to Schulzendorf near the new BER airport to find the manor house that stood in for Beth's orphanage in the series. It's an evocative place linked to one of Berlin's most illustrious Jewish families (thread)
Anyone, regardless of political bent, addressing a journalist in 2021 as "junge Frau" (young lady) needs to think long & hard about the line of work they're in
Baerbock follows up with another jibe against Scholz: "They warned me after this week: please, no jokes about the chancellor. And above all: please, no gaffes. But you only avoid gaffes if you don't say anything. And some apparently do that better than I do."
This is lovely. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has 630 messages from Germans in this corona year projected onto his palace "Dearest Grandma, this year you turned 102 - we couldn't even hug once. Stay strong! We'll do it in 2021 for your 103rd"
Easily the most impassioned I've ever seen Olaf Scholz: "We will continue to support Ukraine with money and humanitarian aid but this must also be said: we will support it with arms shipments, just as many other countries in Europe are doing, so it can defend itself..." 1/2
There is so much of this that reads wrong: "Merkel showed the EU has adopted a new position", "no problem", "must stay in full alignment forever". This is pure Johnson blame game. Waiting for readout from Merkel's office...
A Merkel sentence if there ever was one, on feminism and female leadership: "Women tend to long for efficiency." „Frauen haben tendenziell eine Sehnsucht nach Effizienz.“
Krastev, in this Spiegel interview, says Putin once told him in Sochi that he thought the predominance of female Russia specialists in the Obama administration was a deliberate attempt to humiliate him
Our 87-year-old Berlin neighbor, who's lived in her flat since 1967, uses the stairwell windowsill as a repository for things she thinks any of us in the building might need. Today's offering: 4 pairs of reading glasses

Just by way of comparison: Merkel is holding a 90-minute conversation with patients & essential care workers, asking detailed questions about what would make their lives easier during the pandemic. A week ago it was young trainees with uncertain economic futures
Friends, if you ever get nervous about public speaking, carry yourself with the jaw-dropping arrogance of a German professor berating the Ukrainian ambassador on the basis of lessons drawn by Nazis in his own family during WWII
