How to be a voice actor: When you’re sixteen, voice in two or three anime “abridged series” on YouTube that fall apart after the first four episodes. Then, start auditioning for literally everything you see. Don’t get paid, turn thirty, then you’ll be hired by Crunchyroll. 💯

Mandatory team discussion is a red flag. Mandatory VCs is a red flag. Mandatory unpaid live rehearsals is a red flag. Continuous communication with the director is a red flag. Being expected to be involved with the project past VO is a red flag.

How to make a demo when you don’t have money/resources: - Write your own script. - Record several passes (each line in SEPARATE audio files, don’t record them all one after the other). - Ask peers for feedback. - Repeat until satisfied. - Put it all together with music/SFX.

Here’s a VO tip! It seems obvious, but many people don’t know! I didn’t know until way late in the game. Do NOT record in stereo. Record your lines in MONO, unless otherwise requested. It’s very easy to switch in Audacity! You’ll notice a big difference in quality! ✨

A reminder for anime dub hopefuls: CR is not the only dubbing company. Yes, it’s the monopoly and the most widely known, but not the only one. Start researching other dub companies and other outlets. Your journey doesn’t have to end here due to one company’s decision.

A tip for new voice actors: Do not say “yes” to everything. If an (indie) studio asks you to help write scripts, help edit audio or video, or do anything that is not voice acting— especially unpaid— just don’t. Do your job, put your foot down, and don’t succumb to pressure.

Word to new VAs— Just because your friend is in a project or casting a project doesn’t mean you get an automatic in. If they’re a good CD, you won’t even get a bias from them. So don’t expect special treatment or assume you’ll be locked in for a role.

You are in a project to do VO. If it’s any more than that, that is up to your discretion. But a professional director will never make you spend unpaid time with them or do unpaid work on the side. Remember that you are worth more than unpaid hours of labor.

Ten years ago, I struggled to save up $300 to take a VO class in a city I lived eight hours from. Today, I can send $80-120 to a reputable studio and get four hours of class from an incredible actor all from the comfort of my own home. Remote recording is opening many doors.

Audition Tip: If you decide to say the lines three times, read them in different tones/voices/inflections. If you read the lines three times in the EXACT SAME VOICE AND TONE, there is no reason to read them over and over. Listen back to your auditions. Please.

Here’s your Monday PSA. Don’t become friends with creatives to get free stuff. This goes for voice work, audio work, art, and the like. Don’t become friends with voice actors to try and get closer to another voice actor. That’s creepy. 1/3

To my NSFW VAs— Do NOT let potential clients manipulate you into lowering your prices. Ever. Do not give in to their rude comments. Do not give them a discount. Tell them to find another VA if they’re not willing to pay your prices. You ARE worth it. Don’t believe otherwise.

Voice actors; You’re in a ring with all the other VAs you know. Weapons line the walls, there are rocks and trees surrounding us where we can hide. It’s a VO Hunger Games arena, if you will. There can only be one. Tag a VA friend and tell them how you’d take them out. 😈
