Today I paid $2.50 to park in a downtown Bethesda garage for two hours. If my fiance and I had taken the bus, it would have cost $8 round trip for us both total.
Something here is very backwards.
TIL you can own your own private rail car & attach it to an Amtrak train
only ~100 private cars in operation in the US, they are extremely expensive (~$300k+) + Amtrak charges ~$5/mile.
But there are 100 rich train lovers out there!
Unpopular opinion, but I'm glad to see this. Fewer people choose to drive when charged for parking, so this is good climate policy — although transit should run more frequently on weekends to compensate.
Charles County, MD has overtaken Prince George's County, MD as the richest majority-Black jurisdiction in the country, with Waldorf being the new epicenter of the area’s Black middle class
Over a 10-month period in 2022 there were 40 crashes on Old Georgetown Road. Since the bike lane installation, travel times have gone up by *one minute* at most, and there have been no crashes. Is one minute of your time worth someone's life?
I love this graphic! Most people don't realize it's literally *illegal* to build duplexes and triplexes in the same process as a single family detached home in most parts of Montgomery County.
I am once again asking you to understand that new apartments are always going to be more expensive than apartments built in 1935, unless you subsidize them.

Nice try. u claim elrich against public transit. no. hes against politicians colluding w/developers to change zoning laws that favor the rich to the detriment of working class
Turns out landlords keep urban storefronts vacant because they are willing to forgo rents today in order to preserve the option to lease their space to someone else (who might pay higher rents) tomorrow
a Metro GM who not only rides transit but rides the shuttle buses when the trains are down?? maybe it's sad but it means so much to see important people who are surely super busy actually use the system they are leading. it shows that they care
Checked out the 🔴🚇 & bus shuttle taking to customers and thx the team for their hard work. Smooth trip for me but apologies to customers who got delayed with unrelated signal issue happened at Judiciary Sq. Shows need to get this critical work done for longterm reliability.
A Blue Line loop would generate the most ridership but also cost the most, at $30-35 billion. Compare that with the $33 billion the region is planning to spend on nearly 900 miles of new roads by 2045, which will lead to a 45% increase in congestion.
ZONING REFORM WORKS
Sales prices for new homes have fallen from $1m+ to between the high $300s and mid $500s in certain cases. Building middle-income housing can still be done, we just need to allow it!
My biggest hope for governor-elect
@iamwesmoore
is that he will set Maryland on a new path for sustainable, equitable transportation by cancelling the I-495/I-270 expansion and leading on landmark investments in MARC, WMATA, MTA, and local bus systems.
sometimes when I'm waiting at a bus stop for 10 minutes with 30 people I think about the drivers who are upset about their trip being delayed by 30 seconds due to a bike lane
Yes!!! People need to understand that the 15-minute city should not apply to jobs. While more people should be able to live closer to where they work, a 15 minute standard undermines the geometry of labor markets that makes cities successful.
The reason we drove wasn't because of price alone — we were on a tight schedule and the J2 is unreliable. But a society where bad bus service costs more than prime parking? That ain't it.

This might be the best explanation I've seen for why single family exclusive zoning is still a problem today, despite anti-discrimination laws in housing
County Exec Marc Elrich opposes a state bill to end parking minimums within a 1/4 mile of Metro and Purple Line stations in MoCo because it supersedes local land use authority.
I hope the Council and state delegation support this bill for climate, affordability, and livability.
I just got accused of "working for the developers" (whatever, I've heard it before), and then that person revealed they're a part owner of a building company‼️
This is huge. The Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule, which is especially focused on getting localities to change their zoning to allow apartments in single-family neighborhoods, is something that the federal gov't has tried and failed to implement since the late 60s.
Breaking news: The Biden administration is introducing a rule that will require pretty much every city, county and state to draw up an "equity plan" for fair housing, or risk losing federal funding.
This is my heads up to the Twitterverse that I'll be leaving CSG to join Rockville as a principal planner later this month. I'm excited to stay local and get experience as a professional planner! Working at CSG has been fantastic and deeply meaningful. Now it's your turn! ⬇️
Hoboken hasn’t had a single traffic fatality since 2018 by aggressively installing the things that are proven to make cities safer for everyone: bike lanes, curb extensions, bus lanes, high-visibility crosswalks, and raised intersections.
The governor of Hawaii has evoked emergency powers to streamline the development approvals process. “Let me break it down for you. We don’t have enough houses for our people. It’s really that simple.”

An incredible older man in a speedo and bucket hat spent all day building this sand castle while his wife showed onlookers a photo album of his past creations. When finished, he gave us this flyer.
Great visualization of the original infrastructure proposal and the bipartisan plan, from the New York Times. Check out that huge decrease for electric vehicles — a shift that can only really be enabled by the fed gov't.
I've been told by a NIMBY that my high-rise building is an "anthill," but I didn't expect a similar sentiment to come from a leading urbanist. Maybe stop comparing apartment dwellers to animals? Incredibly offensive.

Silver Spring is baaack 😍 Tonight I had beer with a friend at a local brewery that I'm rapidly becoming a regular at, got dinner at a cute crowded sushi bar, and then ate that dinner on Veterans Plaza experiencing my first live music since Nov 2019! My heart is full.
shameful that transportation departments across Maryland and Virginia are claiming their highway widenings will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, despite decades of research showing the opposite
This morning it took an hour to get from Silver Spring to Rockville. It would've taken 22 mins to drive, and 15 mins with bidirectional MARC.
It's difficult to communicate to drivers how huge and inaccessible this county is without a car, and how it could be better!
I was today years old when I learned that this parking lot in downtown Silver Spring has a historic designation and thus must keep its current form, even if it's not actually used as a parking lot. DUDE WHAT???!!
The D.C. Council has given initial approval to a bill from

this is a particularly interesting graphic from the report showing housing starts adjusted for population. you can clearly see how housing production has never rebounded from the great recession

I've been disappointed by Gov. Moore's decision to keep moving forward with Hogan's highway expansion, but I was even more disappointed that this open house made it seem like the project was going to include things that it does not (stations 1, 2, and 3). Very misleading. 🧵
Look at my lovely friends speaking at a press conference for a bill that will eliminate parking minimums near transit 🤩 This is what local advocacy is all about. Learn more and save the date for the public hearing on 1/16 at 1:30pm:
This map says a lot. Namely, DC and nearby communities aren't welcoming enough people (especially Montgomery and Fairfax). Instead, more and more people are priced-out to Loudoun, Prince William, Frederick, and Howard Counties.
Baltimore is the only city in the greater DMV that makes the short list for "welcoming" places for refugees. Everyone in the DC area who has a "refugees welcome" sign should be mad about this.
The State Department has identified 19 “welcoming” communities where Afghans and Iraqis could settle based on a number of measures, including but not limited to housing availability.
It goes without saying, New York City didn’t make the cut.
Let me just say it out loud: a road as shitty and dangerous as University Blvd would never be allowed to exist in its current condition if it were in an area that was whiter and wealthier.
Tonight I was appointed to join

Visited Brunswick, MD for the first time today! This is for everyone who doesn't understand how we can have compact growth and complete communities in farther out from major metro areas.
I didn't realize this: WMATA reduced jurisdictions' annual subsidies during the pandemic, but bc jurisdictions are now using the lower pandemic number as a base and there's a 3% cap on increases, Metro has gotten $690m less than it otherwise would have.
Metrobus heard from nearly 500 bus riders and, turns out, unsurprisingly, people primarily want buses to show up when scheduled and to have shorter wait times.
All I ask for is bidirectional service on the Brunswick Line so that there's one (1) single good way via transit to get between Rockville and Silver Spring
MTA is looking for your feedback in redefining the vision and goals of the MARC system so that it meets the needs of all Marylanders. An online survey is now available and will remain open through December 4th. To take the survey and learn more, visit .
shower thought: most of the single-family homes I see for sale under $500k only have two bedrooms. I feel like a lot of times people talk about the lack of "family-sized" units in new apartment buildings as a problem...
Ooo, this is fascinating. A street zoned for up to 22 units/acre has a wider range of housing price points, including at significantly lower prices, compared to a nearby street that only allows up to 5 units/acre. This shows how density can lead to diversity!
I could not be more happy that

has passed! The new general plan represents the best of what's possible with good planning and policy and lays the groundwork for a bright future. Thank you to all those who championed the plan!
Very exciting to see WMATA double down on transit-oriented development! "The plan, which includes creating 26,000 new housing units, is expected to generate $340 million in new annual taxes and $50 million in annual lease revenue."
Look at this cute af duplex I saw on Redfin today! $395k in Wheaton <10 min bike ride from two Metro stations. These housing types already exist in MoCo, but are nevertheless still illegal in most of the county.
the car that stopped for me in the crosswalk got hit by the car behind it that did not stop (this is after a first car sped by and did not stop at all) I feel so much secondhand guilt even though I know it's not my fault!
It's shameful that 15 minutes is often considered frequent service. WMATA considers 12 mins frequent, but I'd love to see some 10, 7, and 5 minute headways.
Back home in the exurbs, I'm struggling to put into words what I'm thinking, but I'll give it a try.
Growing up, this was the norm: big yards, big houses, lots of trees, driving everywhere. Looking at it now, it's extraordinary.
