I repeatedly tell my students, eugenics is not a thing of the past. As recently as 2017, indigenous women were kept from seeing their babies until they consented to sterilization. They were told the procedure was reversible. 2017. Let that sink in.

I'm profoundly deaf. I spent years training myself to hear on the telephone with my analog hearing aids so I could call my friends. With digital aids, I lost that autonomy. Then I got a closed captioning phone. For the first time in 5 years, I dealt with a bank issue myself!

It seems they use "auditory training" to teach these kids to make sense of sound so that they can join hearing peers at mainstream schools. I assume many of these kids use power hearing aids and/or cochlear devices, but this is still not an effective method of "listening."
