something is intense/scary/activating about right now between the collapse of internet community platforms as we know it and... whatever all the AI stuff is indicating. this comic (and perhaps all of my work) is a love letter to a better world for us + for technology. ty.
when i went home for break i found a self-portrait painting i did in high school inspired by "post-internet art"– before i learned anything about making websites. i thought it was fitting to do a reinterpretation of it using javascript and selfies
an AI could never replace the type of art work i do. what are you gonna do, give it complex trauma from intergenerational chinese-american experience so the only way to survive is to self-affirm through autobiographical work? honestly i'd like to see that
if i taught a ~6 part class (open to anyone) on reimagining computing technology for your past self from a place of healing—walking through a speculative design process together, would you sign up?? would you pay a small fee??? asking for a friend (the friend is me)
i've released a demo of my CD-ROM memoir game!
Chao Bing: A Read-Only Memory Experience is an interactive memoir in the style of a 90s CD-ROM storybook game. It's about memory, time, and transformation–and sort of about scallion pancakes too.
in case it's interesting or helpful: i got anti-raise!🎉🥳
i was very fortunate to be able to negotiate w/ my work to reduce down to 30 hr, ~3.5 days/weeks (and take a 25% pay cut)
i'll spend the rest of my week for dedicated art-work time and being a human (🧵 continues..)
anyone out there a founding designer at a startup (or some comparable level of responsibility) but also building a personal creative practice that you want to take seriously? i want to talk. for lack of better word i'm feeling crazy
I've been working on an interactive web comic and it's finally live! read it here:
it's about losing phone photos, rehashing my early experience at MIT, and general weirdness around getting older, memories, and the passage of time 😳😔🥀
ok something i've been thinking about tech world "design engineer" discourse... people have been solo designing + coding software forever! it can be personal and expressive and not just about optimizing your labor! what if we had an imagination outside of the tech industry..
new post!
Solo-Devs and Risk-Takers (An Artistic Exploration of Experimental Tools)
"Exploring experimental digital work will always be very new by principle that this is an ever growing possibility space where anyone’s wildest dreams can be made true…”
i made a short, silly (& sad) game boy game for
@FreePlayExhibit
, opening next week!
it is the world's most boring dating sim combined with a narrative about expectations, queerness, and the possibility of dreaming for more..
go fishin' at 🐟🎣
preparing for a workshop on designing personal websites for an upcoming women in stem conference at harvard~*~
during my time in CS, i felt like resources and narratives around careers/presenting yourself professionally were low key soul-draining
Excited to (finally) launch my tech/design/art zine shop at !
You can currently buy my "Making a Website" zine there, in both print and digital PDF formats. 📕💻 Physical zines will be shipped starting early November. 🍂
everuthing makes sense after understanding my art practice as a means to heal my inner child! in fact i feel like most people's creative work is about this, with varying degrees of consciousness and directness
thinking about how MIT takes 1000+ teens each year, gives them trauma from an incredibly impossible standard of what it means to be and do enough, tells them they can change the world, and pops them back out 4 years later to climb the ranks of industries
excited to participate! i'm planning a workshop called "I am Cringe but I am Free: Learn HTML and CSS with SpaceHey"
we'll customize cringe SpaceHey (modern MySpace clone) profiles for ourselves & discuss nostalgia, identity, and what we want for the future of social media

here's the painting from 2014! it's been a long life since then. dunno what i have to say, other than i’m proud of high school me for being curious even if i didn’t know where i was going, and proud of adult me for fueling the curiosity of younger me along the way
Pulled together my last 3 brain cells to plan "Neostalgic Computing", a class where we'll walk through a speculative design process to reimagine computing from a personal, retrospective place of healing! Tysm

i find this profoundly poetic.. and it crossed my mind last year to try to create something on flash despite (or because of?) its deprecation. what does it mean to fight to create and keep something alive and breathing once it's been deemed obsolete. i'm gonna cry
It is amazing to see that three years after the official end of Flash, there are still new Flash games created. Plus, thoses game jams are great showcases of the progress being made on Flash emulation.
increasingly no longer feel like i need anyone's approval or permission in particular...i just wanna work on my little stuff because i really believe in it. sometimes i feel sad because it could have always been this way
to wrap up my Neostalgic Computing course at

crying at the google protest.. crying at columbia student protestors, crying at the cherry blossoms.. i want so much more from life and the world!! i am born to be a lover!!

@hyperlink_a
✨ lots of gratitude to my students for signing up!!! hosting my own class from the ground up is nerve wracking but i'm so very excited to see what my students dream up of in 6 weeks 😲
now that i finally found a full time job, i'm looking forward to letting my website be its full expression of what it wants to be under a non-"zomg i have look employable to employers" lens
Save the date! On Friday December 15, 2023, at 7pm ET, we will present our Resident Artist Jackie Liu's work - Chao Bing: A Reading/Writing. For more info and to RSVP, follow the link:
if you're in NYC end of june, I'm going to speak onstage at

i'll also be exhibiting it IRL along w/ my lovely Art & Code Cohort at

come say hi 🥀 💞
tickets:
my new york hobby is ruining the ambiance of my neighborhood bars by showing up with my laptop to work on my memoir art-game and sobbing, all while witnessing white ppl go on awkward first dates
decided to do the
#artvsartist2022
trend LOL
i say "lol" because i feel like my work this year is not in the category of consistent polished visual outputs. it's taken the form of doing autobio comics to process difficult emotions... (cont)
excited to participate! i'm planning a workshop called "I am Cringe but I am Free: Learn HTML and CSS with SpaceHey"
we'll customize cringe SpaceHey (modern MySpace clone) profiles for ourselves & discuss nostalgia, identity, and what we want for the future of social media
when i was at MIT there were multimillion dollar tent gatherings to attract investors and now there are tent gatherings to divest... and i think that's beautiful!!!
🔊 DISCLOSE, DIVEST, WE WILL NOT STOP WE WILL NOT REST 🇵🇸
The MIT students and workers have made their demands clear. We will remain on Kresge Lawn until MIT severs ties with the genocide in Gaza! 💪🏾
i also wanted to follow up my zine with tangible next steps to actually learn the basics of building websites, so I created an interactive tutorial about building a '90s style under construction webpage:
It's a WIP so feedback is always welcome 🙂
i rly want to help make the ideas that science & technology studies and new media art offer in deconstructing and reimagining computing systems more accessible, and not keep them siloed in highly academic and art-world contexts. i am going to work towards that
starting to apply to product design jobs again and honestly when u strip away anxiety it's actually kind of fun and subversive... like oo i get a little thrill thinking about wasting 30 seconds of tech company's billable hours by sending them to my room decoration game portfolio
after building scrollable web comics manually in the past,
@jackieis_online
built a tool to make scrollable webcomics with no code! (we're all hoping you release this to the world)
So excited to get this shoutout by
@shannonmattern
!! 😊 We read your "Maintenance and Care" article in my NYU Experimental Humanities class - I'm definitely thinking about how this project can be an entryway for others into an ethos of care!
all the programming/design skills i've acquired through my academic and professional experiences is culminating in making the ultimate room decoration game of my childhood dreams and i think that's beautiful
i worked on this for the past few months and built their web experience! probably one of the most in-depth, interactive web programming projects i've ever done 😮 thankful to have gotten a glimpse into the theater world and contribute to something so big !
THE MANIC MONOLOGUES is live!
This innovative, interactive, theatrical experience spotlights true stories submitted by resilient people across the world living with mental health challenges, performed by a celebrated cast of actors.
#TheManicMonologues
ALSO i'll add that the only "AI art" i've done was a performance piece i did 4 years ago, using neural style transfer, where i "collaborated" with my childhood self to create drawings styled on my 12 year old self's anime art in real-time
i'm currently writing a memoir visual novel/video game and it's so difficult, labor intensive, emotionally draining–and that's what makes it so fucking worthwhile
as long as i'm working in this mode all the GPT/AI hype just feels like noise. i cant be bothered
ok now that i have a 3.5 day work week and i no longer feel pressured to fill all my waking hours with making progress on my personal creative work, idk what to do at night
what you all do after 9pm and before you sleep? i've already watched so many cruise ship tour videos
really honored to have Fishin' for Average Caucasian Boyfriends in
@FreePlayExhibit
! i'm still so floored by the level of detail put into all of the show
if you back the kickstarter you can get a physical cartridge of my game among other goodies 🎣🫣
anyone out there a founding designer at a startup (or some comparable level of responsibility) but also building a personal creative practice that you want to take seriously? i want to talk. for lack of better word i'm feeling crazy
my goal in 2023 is to make generative art: not necessarily generative in a procedural or algorithmic sense but generative in emotionally resonant, world-buildy, relational type of way 💕
Had the honor of beta testing
@jackieis_online
's scrolly comic maker! I illustrated my struggle of remembering that I have food at home. Check it out below 🌃 🍟
the kickstarter supports all of the materials and time
@moawko
and the team have put into the exhibition... including (and not limited to) printing holographic game packaging and building GIANT GAME BOY
having an interesting time getting attacked by nazi twitter for a quick tweet of me affirming the value of art in my life... didn't think that would be so polarizing but here we are. thank you to the people in my life who are values aligned and building the same world
when i get to the UI design i want to make it akin to
@alienmelon
's electric zine maker 🥺
hand drawn interface elements....sound effects... the tool itself should feel like a comic
