Spy novelist. Former spy. THE PEACOCK AND THE SPARROW out now from

. A New Yorker & NPR Best Book of the Year. Edgar Award winner.
For many years, my new year's resolution has been to get my book out into the world. Thanks so much to
@simonschuster
,
@AtriaBooks
, readers & everyone along the way for helping THE PEACOCK AND THE SPARROW take flight. New resolution: book 2! HNY!

Paperback of THE PEACOCK AND THE SPARROW drops in a few days! So snapped some pics at
@MrSmithsDC
, the bar where Aldrich Ames sold secrets to the Soviets. "You can be a hero or a traitor," my character Rashid says. "The choice is yours."

@cia
Spying for
@CIA
in wartime Baghdad, 2004-5. What you can’t see: the go-bag at my feet. The fear. The people next to me, who kept me going. Spying's not always glamorous. In THE PEACOCK AND THE SPARROW, I tried to process this heavy profession.

A bit speechless that, in addition to an Edgar and a Barry (which already blew my mind), THE PEACOCK AND THE SPARROW is now up for an
@thrillerwriters
award for Best First Novel. (what?!) (& best audiobook as well!) So grateful. Thank you, ITW!

Last night at
@PoliticsProse
, James Grady of SIX DAYS OF THE CONDOR fame (+ one of the nicest writers out there), entertained a full house w/ stories of 1950s rural Montana, where he grew up. His new book, THE SMOKE IN OUR EYES, chronicles this era. Can't wait to read it.
Finished A SPY ALONE. Beaumont is at the forefront of the espionage genre, capturing the changing nature of intelligence: soft influence & business deals are overtaking stolen secrets; long-term insinuation is replacing Cold-War tradecraft. Brilliant read.
@Cb20226
@spybrary
Thrilled w/ the paperback cover of THE PEACOCK AND THE SPARROW (out 4/16/24). So many readers love the hardcover that we wanted to retain its basic elements. But the colors are inverted: in espionage, sometimes "the sky is the ground and the ground the sky."
@AtriaMysteryBus
Today one of my most meaningful events- a chat w/ the
@CIA
's creative writing group, Invisible Ink. Total honor. No pics allowed inside the building, but I left w/ a pen flashlight, which seemed appropriate to THE PEACOCK AND THE SPARROW (IYKYK).

Special shout-out to these 2 amazing women, military officers I worked w/ in Baghdad. Nearly 20 years ago, we dodged mortars together. Yesterday they showed up at my book signing…b/c that’s just who they are. Love these ladies.

Proud to be one of the few female authors in the spy novel genre. In honor of women’s history month, some of my favorite female authors: Patricia Highsmith, Willa Cather, Herta Müller, Marguerite Duras, Zora Neale Hurston. Check them out!

Hometown sightseeing! (1) OSS chief William "Wild Bill" Donovan's house, set discreetly back from the street; (2) Roald Dahl's residence as a British intel officer (apparently quite the ladies' man); (3) home of Allen Dulles,
@CIA
director thru the Bay of Pigs.

Azaleas in bloom @ Nt'l Arboretum. Spy fact: China offered to build an ornate garden there. Materials to be shipped in dip pouches, which can't be searched (as readers of THE PEACOCK AND THE SPARROW know). USG found out garden was SIGINT station.

1) Iraq. Autumn 2004. “Most dangerous place on earth.” > 800 U.S. soldiers killed to date. Green Zone mortared daily. AQIZ leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is wreaking havoc. I’m a first-tour case officer for
@CIA
trying to break AQIZ. The journey to my novel—out now—starts here.
Charles Beaumont, a former
#MI6
operative, is the real deal. So many tradecraft details in A SPY ALONE, about a fictional Oxford spy circle, ring true...like how surveillance never changes its shoes. Loving the cross-pond spy-training commonalities. Great read so far.
@Cb20226
"Writing so visceral you can touch it... Collins is one of the most three-dimensional & complicated characters you'll encounter." Thank you,

In Bahrain, Valentine's Day has an entirely different meaning. "February 14" is the name of the opposition group opposed to the monarchy. 2/14/11 was the "Day of Rage," when protestors took to the streets & ignited the island's Arab Spring.

Flashback to a simpler world: Cold War ended; democracy flourishing in E. Europe. I waited 2 hrs at a bookstore in Cambridge, England to get Gorbachev’s signature. But 21st century brought new conflicts, like the Arab Spring. THE PEACOCK AND THE SPARROW dives in.
@AtriaMysteryBus
What better on a chilly day than local spy-site sightseeing? DC homes of Kim Philby and Donald Maclean, two of the Cambridge Five spy ring. "Who gained the most from this complex game I cannot say," Philby wrote in his memoir.

Lucky enough to get an advance copy of EVERY SPY A TRAITOR by Alex Gerlis. Truly one of the best spy novels I've read in recent years. Ironic, darkly realistic, full of pre-WW II historical details. Reads like a classic. Hits shelves 6/6/24.
