Feel like throwing the towel in after this rejection. Theatre must examine how there is a whole generation backlogged and dropping out because they can't take the next step on to bigger stages or leadership roles. Theatre will become even less accessible than it already is.

Just had a flashback to an interview to be a resident asst director on a long running NT show. They asked why I wanted the role and I said "financially stability", and they looked at me with such disgust that I could say something so patently honest. Reader, I was not hired.

Horrified to hear @ace_national have been offering NPOs (and prospective NPOs) financial incentives to move to their priority areas (like Portsmouth). Makes a mockery of focussing on locality, and it devalues those artists/companies who are rooted/have committed to those areas.

@dieworkwear Hard agree. Cultural knowledge of any kind signified a deep interest in something you'd properly engaged with. And this didn't mean gatekeeping necessarily, it was the means to introduce others to what you loved. Now everything can be found with a search it is far less valuable.

Yes, Art created for children can have huge educational and learning benefits. But could we make some Art for children that isn't. That just speaks to their experience and humanity. Art doesn't have to be utilitarian just because it's for a younger audience.

I really hate being a director sometimes. The whole process of getting work is so opaque and Byzantine. Every project has to be conceived, pitched, applied for, produced and only then directed, and all of that may never happen. It's exhausting and demoralising.

At a conference for teachers this morning, within minutes of arriving heard one teacher say to their colleagues, "You can't teach creativity". So disappointing that we're still in this mindset that creativity is innate or a 'a gift'. Of course it can be taught. And should be!

Absolutely no NHS dentists around us. My wife was entitled to free dental treatment when she was pregnant and in her first year of being a Mum. She spent the entire time on a waiting list, and still nothing. Conservatives will make GP care the same if they stay in. #r4today

I'd also suggest a thorough re-examination of the schemes and initiatives to support directors. Are they actually getting artists through the ranks? Or are venues using them to boost their participation numbers for ACE money? See also 'micro-commissions' for the above reasons

When I was on the NT directors course, we asked whether The Shed could be gifted to somewhere that needed a theatre. We were told that the wrong kind of screws were used so it couldn't be reassembled once dismantled. Which, in retrospect, was clearly bollocks.

Yes, a thousand times yes. Children deserve extraordinary art not because it 'improves literacy' or 'helps with learning' or 'sets them up as future art attenders' but because they're human beings that deserve art and for that art to resonate, disturb, celebrate and provoke.

This is the view the people of #Portsmouth will have of their #DDay75 commemorations. A metal barrier followed by a seven foot metal wall. Cut off from this City's proudest moment and the probably final time to see veterans here. All because of Trump. Disgraceful.

An audience moment today @NSTheatres #BillionaireBoy had me welling up. During 'Weird As You', our song celebrating finding friendship, two young people in front of me had a moment of recognition of what that was like and hugged each other. Young people seeing theatre matters.

Spent the week as a teaching assistant in primary schools. Spent it wearing masks, washing hands and walking one way school systems alot of the time. And I'd like to say, classes sizes are too big, schools are in desperate need of capital funding... AND TEACHERS ARE AMAZING.

Maddening when arts orgs ask 'why are you applying for this job?'. Because it's a job!? Why else?! "because I'll be good at this job, you'll pay me to do it and that financial and job security do something I'm good at would be great". People who work at orgs, what do I put?

#r4today Price is only one part of the food puzzle. People's wages and time are an enormous part of this. If you are both money and time poor buying less processed food and instead cooking from scratch is almost impossible. Same with exercise. Wages must go up.

@WankersOTW @JohnHuwEvans2 I actually think it's an excellent poem. The half rhymes and scansion are clearly considered, with the final line of each verse a complete rejection of those to insult. The use of biographical detail and the subject's own words, rather skilful I'd say.

When I left university (19 years ago), I spent 6 months being trained (fully funded for a dozen or so artists) in how to be a professional artist *by Birmingham City Council*! Since then almost every training scheme, early or mid career, has gone. How can this be a career?
