Anybody calling for reduced immigration should be required to elicit *exactly* what they'd cut. Do the maths, present the numbers.
Returning citizens? New Zealanders? Students? Family/partners who have been on up to decade long waiting lists? Skills shortages like doctors?
So something very unique about the long distance trains in China - you can order food from restaurants in the stations along the way and they'll deliver it to the platform, when the train stops the attendants will take it and bring it to your seat.
In this thread:
- foreigners finding out that Australia commonly sells houses using auctions.
- Australians (including me) finding out that the rest of the world doesn't commonly sell houses using auctions.
A crazy thing about Australia that they don’t want you to know is that this is how they sell houses. Like this is the normal way you sell a normal house.
I don’t wear sunscreen, and I never will.
We blame the sun for cancer when we should be blaming our diets.
But if we cleaned up our diets, how would Big Food and Big Pharma make their money?
Sunscreen and a poor diet will make you sick.
Sick people = $$$

Sorry but this is a shocking cartoon, how can you applaud it?
(a) Quite a few members of the public did try to apprehend him
(b) Is it suggesting that running away from someone with a knife is the opposite of courage? It's just common sense lol.
Process of getting it to the platform obviously takes a little time so food wasn't the hottest, but it's a cool option if the buffet car food isn't what you feel like!

Nah this is the wrong take.
If customers start going for one week delivery, they'll just fire a bunch of drivers and the ones remaining will still need to pee in bottles.
The only way to fix it is stronger labor laws and enforcement.
A lot of valid criticism about vaccines and how it's been managed around the country, but this is seriously impressive of the Victorian Government and the other governments need to pull their finger out on this.
Sorry, this is gross.
I support eventually offering over 60s Pfizer, but if SA has enough doses to do this now, they need to have doses taken off them and diverted to Victoria.
Buffet for boomers should not be happening while essential workers in an outbreak can't get a shot.
#SouthAustralia
will become the first state in the nation to offer the Pfizer jab to anyone over 12 years of age, including those over 60, at state-run clinics.
They’ll be able to book online from Monday as we add more than 60,000 new appointments.

Yeah I guess the difference here is that it's all integrated with the railway so there's less risk of things going wrong. Couldn't really do it manually because the trains only stop for a couple of minutes at most stations.
We have that problem in Melbourne too. The other day I got off the train at Southern Cross and was confused because I wasn't in empty space between 4 stars.
I want to know if I need to get off there. I know that Wynyard station is at a Wynyard, Town Hall is at Town Hall, Museum is at the Museum, Circular Quay is at Circular Quay. Where the fuck is Gadigal station?
Hey Ben I'm on the platform in Tokyo and I don't know where my train is going because I don't know how to wait 20 seconds for it to switch to English, can you help please?
Another state doing this.
I can't understand how you can ethically give a dose of Pfizer to a 60 year old in a zero covid state while young people in NSW and Victoria are dying. To me, that's just a failure of leadership.
@thetrees80
I enjoyed my lunch and you can enjoy not catching trains in pretty much every country which lets you take your own food onboard or order it.

It's hilarious to everybody in Australia at how little Outback Steakhouse represents anything like Australian food. It's like the entire of the US is in on an elaborate joke on us.

Lukewarm totally normal take:
Doesn't matter how gender critical you are, repeatedly and intentionally misgendering or deadnaming in a professional context is harassment/bullying and harassment/bullying is a sackable offence.
Apparently I am supposed to be looking after my kid who has Covid even though I now too have Covid myself this seems unreasonable can someone please check the rules?
The more I think about this policy the more it just boggles me more. Pure unadulterated class warfare.
Too poor to chip into your kids fund? Government puts in $200.
Wealthy enough that you're probably funding your kids education/housing anyway? Government puts in $400./

Did you get the $30 compensation for each inspection that's required under the new laws? It's not much but at least I could take myself to lunch on the landlord's dime each time they did an inspection.

Ah yeah as a resident of the area it's so fantastic that the racecourse is fine while all the local roads are under a metre of water!
Real victoriazels know this means dtp are soft-launching that in 30 years a realestate company will build a shopping centre on top of parkville station and slowly allow it to decay until the SRL is completed

The guy caught it in the Adelaide hotel from another person next door, on his last day of quarantine. Then got on a plane to Melbourne the same day (zero chance he would have infected anyone on the plane) and incubated it once he got home.
Actually, I think the principle of "your state pushed for building subs to create jobs in your state" means "your state gets to deal with the politics of storing nuclear waste" is actually a reasonable one.
Compare the pair:
Daniel Andrews: “the waste can go where all the jobs are going”
Peter Malinauskas: “The test that should be applied to where the nuclear waste is stored in Australia should be: where’s the safest place to store in the nation’s interests?”
I understand why No Cops at Pride is a thing and if queer people want to protest cops at pride that's their prerogative, but a cishet woman doing it alone by interrupting the parade seems a bit off to me.

You bought a house for $16k with a salary of $9k. $9k was average salary in 1973.
To buy a $300k house today at the same ratio (good luck doing that unless you move to a small town hours from the city) you'd need an income of $170k, which is almost double average income.

The Melbourne CBD is far better as an entertainment (and residential) district than other Aus cities. That's the way other cities need to go if they want to resolve the issue of WFH leading to fewer office workers in the city.
If you're a "progressive" attacking Hazzard today for saying what the QLD CHO said two days ago, I'm sorry but you're not a progressive you're just a politics brain hack, please unfollow.

It's not fair to expect people to make that decision themselves. If the government wants hotel quarantine workers to not live their lives like the rest of us, they should make that a part of the conditions (and pay people for it to compensate them).
@dylanarvela
Tbh if I was a reporter at the Daily Tele I'd shut up about anything to do with this case, haven't exactly showered yourselves with glory in the way you've been reporting it.
Hahaha loving all the cookers in here objecting to the use of the term "comrade" which was being used by labour/union movements for over a century before it was used by communists.
Mark McGowan led his state through a 1-in-100 year crisis, and worked hard to deliver every single day.
At National Cabinet I saw Mark stick to his values, and above all, put the people of WA first.

can the vaccination status of cases, hospitalisations and deaths be regularly reported in the official datasets please? Ideally stratified by age as well.
Important for people to be able to analyse the risks.
For all those people saying that NSW going to 10 people indoors on Monday is irresponsible, do you realise that's the number that's planned for Victoria at 80%?
NSW will be 7 days away from 80% on Monday.
I got a "man bag" for Xmas (mostly wanted it for travelling) and after a single afternoon walking to the shops I'm questioning why I've spent 31 years trying to shove stuff in my pockets...
This is an amazing debate.
The AEC are bound to follow the law, which includes both the legislation and court rulings because that's how a common law system works.
If the law says ticks are to be counted and crosses aren't, what the hell do you want the AEC to do, break it?
The Greens: we support medium density development and walkable suburbs
Also the Greens: no Woolworths thanks everybody should buy $8 loaves of bread from the organic bakery thank you.

None at all really, but I did a fair bit of research beforehand. Takes a bit of getting used to the payment system (alipay and wechat) etc. And a translation overlay app on my phone (basically it screen records an app and overlays a translation) has been invaluable.
The thing is, Brendan, that minimally disruptive to you (masks, density limits, nightclub closures, school closures etc) are not minimally disruptive to everybody else.
If you don't understand that, you're bad at public health.
My most liberal coded belief is that government restricted shopping hours (not penalty rates, they are good) is a severe overreach of power and states that have them are stupid and should be shot into the sun.
EXCLUSIVE: The Perth shopping hours war is heating up, with the Perth Lord Mayor challenging Premier Roger Cook to run a three-month extended trading hours trial across the metropolitan area.
Hot take: win for Melbourne that none of our trains look even remotely this dated. I caught a school bus that looks like this in high school (2005-2008) and it was very dated then.
The frustrating thing about the debate on Melbourne's public transport is that imo the network is actually very good when it comes to world standard. What lets it down is simple things like frequency, bad bus routing, poor intermodal connectivity etc. Easy and cheap fixes.
With 71.1 per cent of the 2PP vote, new Warrandyte MP Nicole Werner now holds the safest seat in parliament of any Labor or Liberal politician in Victoria. Only a couple of Nats have a safer seat.

It's seems like the AJA is being very successful about pretending they're a serious organisation when making complaints to companies like Qantas and Kmart (remember the stupid Ham-mas bag debacle?).
Why aren't companies checking the credibility of who's whinging to them???
Just saw someone having a snooze on the grass in a park, nobody around for at least 10m in any direction.

The entire response to covid has been "do the right thing to protect others" which naturally leads to "if I do the wrong thing it's my fault" especially in the brains of little kids.

Anybody who's ever left the country (or even at the international airports in the country!) would have seen signs like this that rotate between the names of places in different languages. Guess what: it still works, people don't get lost.

Woohoo! I got my first AZ a couple of weeks ago! They opened it up in Australia to under 40s (I'm 28) who provided informed consent rather than waiting for more Pfizer to open up to younger groups.
AZ hesitancy is a real issue here, we've got shitloads and arms not turning up.
I mean this actually true, most Melbourne trains have three doors per carriage while Sydney double decker trains have two, and when Melbourne tested double deckers they abandoned the trial because of the impact on dwell times.
There's better things to compare the systems on.
Try to stay out of the masking debate these days, but interesting observation from Japan where I just got back from - mask use is rapidly dropping off. I'd estimate maybe 40%, the vast majority surgical masks.
"People masked in Asia before covid" thing was always a lie.
New developments don’t drive down rents - property developers purposely drip feed new developments in order to increase the cost of housing (and their profits).
I don’t oppose property developers. They’re necessary, we need more houses, but property developers actually need to
@JasonFalinskiMP
Because voter ID laws wouldn't actually fix anything (there's very little electoral fraud in Australia, not enough to swing any seats) and would actively disenfranchise people.
Boomer logic:
1. Get access to vaccines earlier than anybody else
2. Spend months whinging about choice of vaccine
3. Finally begrudgingly take the vaccine that other people in the developing world were screaming out for.
4. WHY CAN'T I HAVE MY BOOSTER YET
How was this clown an elected Premier of our third biggest state?
Does he actually think that investors (mostly super funds and institutional investors) are selling Woolworths shares based on them not selling Australia Day merch lol?
People are cancelling restaurant bookings in Melbourne too and we have less cases, masks in shops, vaxx policies and QR codes.
Only reason people aren't going out is because they don't want to be pinged before Christmas. Nothing to do with the restrictions.
What's not in the headline:
The employee was a deadheading pilot and had they flown in economy they likely would not have been able to fly as per pretty standard rules.
Headline makes it sound like it's some desk jockey lol.
The most reputable study on masks showed an 11% reduction in transmission for surgical masks and NO reduction for cloth masks.
Get that masks are relatively low impact and I'll happily wear one when required, but it's honestly insane how it's the hill people are dying on.
It's incredible that people can look at Omicron outbreaks around the world and deduce that the problem in NSW could easily be solved with making masks and QR codes mandatory again. We had over 100 days of lockdown and it didn't stop the spread of Delta.
The only reason we're at 6 and not 1 is our own policy, nobody actually thinks we're of bigger risk than the countries above us but too many other countries look at us with our very strict tourist visa rules and act in reciprocal by refusing us visa free access.
The Henley Passport Index has revealed the most powerful passports in the world for 2024, with Australia improving its ranking to number six.
Aussies can travel visa-free to 189 destinations.

Can we stop losing our goddamn minds now please? Talk about who the wowsers are.
AIDS is not long HIV, stop the insanely bad and scientifically inaccurate comparisons.
Long covid most likely *is* very similar to other post viral syndromes like people get after mono, flu, polio, etc. It's not *new*, what's new is people actually giving a fuck.
Everything u think you know about polio is “long polio.” MS is “long mono.” AIDS is “long HIV.” Viruses are nothing to fuck with, unless you want to find out.
The ease at which a lot of people have lately jumped to "immigration is too high" rather than "the density of our cities is way too low" is seriously depressing for the future.

I see a lot of praise for Vancouver SkyTrain, it does seem to be a pretty cool system with great frequency and service, but compared to Australian train networks it is absolutely incomparable for coverage. It's literally 3 lines with a total of 50 odd stations.

I have also always seen Brisbane & Vancouver as very similar cities, but one has few freeways, better PT and lower car ownership. It also has a variety of interesting neighbourhoods.
