28 was a crazy year. The year I finally finished my PhD and school, FOREVER โผ๏ธ and I started my academic career with a postdoc. Excited to see what 29 brings ๐ฅณ
Today my students are determining the amount of this dextromethorphan (DM) in cough syrup ๐ท DM is typically used as a cough suppressant. DM is naturally fluorescent so they will be using fluorometry ๐ฆ to determine the concentration in these commercial cough syrups

๐ญ๐ I received the W. R. Smith PhD thesis award ๐ฅบ writing it was the hardest thing Iโve had to do (so far). Iโm so glad other people liked it too ๐ ๐ฅ
The pandemic sucks. Iโm sad and SO tired. Living alone I miss family, friends, and really any human contact ๐ฉ Iโm sure Iโm not alone in this. Today I just needed to tweet and vent about it ๐
In other news, if anyone needs a 4 week house guest, Iโm available ๐
Lately Iโve been reflecting on personal things doing a PhD taught me:
I am very brave. I am resilient. I can do really hard things. I will always make it through.
This is me finally feeling happier than Iโve felt in a long time ๐
My monster manuscript has been accepted ๐ This paper involved so much time (and close to 100 pages in my thesis) and we were able to determine some realllly cool things. Canโt wait to share more ๐คฉ
Said goodbye to the school Iโve been attending for 10 years (BSc & PhD) yesterday. It was a place I felt safe and did a lot of growing, not to mention all the incredible friends Iโve met along the way. I am looking forward to my next journey, but now Iโm definitely not okay ๐ญ๐ญ

6 years ago I was failing chemistry courses. I was struggling with my decision to pursue Chem & wondering if everyone was right about me not being able to do this. Today, Iโm in my PhD, published over 5 academic papers, and even won a few scholarships & awards for my research ๐
4 years ago I got a 0 on a quantum physics exam. i met with my professor fearing i needed to change my major & quit physics. today, iโm in a top tier astrophysics Ph.D program & published 2 papers.
STEM is hard for everyoneโgrades donโt mean youโre not good enough to do it.
Omg my thesis is completely DRAFTED ๐ฑThe intro needs a LOT of editing but all the info is there and cited. I canโt believe it ๐ญ๐ญ still much more work to do BUT I canโt believe Iโve finished a complete draft of ALL my chapters ๐ฅบ. This deserves a bottle of wine tonight ๐

Saw a memory on Instagram that 1 year ago today I was about to submit my NSERC application. I didnโt think I stood a chance but I wanted to win so badly. A year later I now hold a CGS-D ๐ฑ. Me 5 years ago, failing all my classes, would have NEVER believed this (1/2)
Taught my first in-person lab today since the pandemic started! The students were using CV to determine the amount of acetaminophen in cough syrup. The Ac is irreversible at these potentials, so only the oxidation is observed. So cool! My favourite lab this semester ๐

news! My latest paper has been published (open access) in the Journal of the Electrochemical Society. Here we investigated the role that the carbon support plays on our Fe-N3 active sites for the oxygen reduction reaction. Check it out ๐
My latest paper ๐ In this work we altered the transition metal in our novel N3 site. We tested the catalysts for the ORR & found that activity is good for most of the metals. Also cool: this work was almost all done during the pandemic ๐ฑ
