See, the Taliban aren’t the only ones obsessed with Muslim women’s dress. We have entire Western governments imposing dress codes on Muslim minorities - specifically women.
Same evil different name. I guess one is perceived as “more acceptable.”
Female students in France will no longer be allowed to wear the loose-fitting abaya dress favoured by some Muslim women 👇
The move comes almost 20 years after France banned headscarves from state schools.

So this museum has decided to not host a exhibition on Islamic art (postponed) because it would be insensitive and traumatic to people in its community?
What’s the offensive part? The existence of Muslims?
The dehumanisation of Muslims comes from all angles. Just wow.
Reason women don’t fast whilst on their periods is because Islam acknowledges it would be too taxing.
It’s not an exemption of practicing faith it’s a blessing & even an honouring of Muslims women’s bodies by Allah.
Allah didn’t tell us to hide our non-fasting so I will not be.
If a woman gets her period, it is haram for her to fast. Moreover, to preserve the sanctity of the Holy month and out of respect for others who are fasting - she shouldn't eat in public.
This is still on my mind this morning. Please don’t do this it’s horrific.
Our Jewish brothers and sisters are not the enemy - they are helping us protest for heavens sake.
We need a ceasefire now, the longer this goes on the longer hatred seeps into people.
Over and over France is systematically oppressing and unfairly targeting Muslims through abuse of power upheld by law, but yeah Islamophobia doesn't exist.
I’ve had enough so I’m calling out
@MTVUK
.
In February 2023 I worked on a documentary with
@MTVUK
for international women’s day - I still haven’t received pay for this work.
I have spoken to several people at MTV through emails/calls... 1/2
Can we just for a second comprehend this. So because a Muslim woman refused to shake this mans hand at a ceremony she has her citizenship revoked for not assimilating.
So can all senior law makers say that women who deny being touched by them are not assimilating to France or?
Honestly someone needs to commission me to write an in-depth piece on how and why it’s toxic for Muslim pain to be centred around the visible mourning of white people. This isn’t solidarity and this isn’t progress. SIGH. 🤷🏼♀️
I have some job news! 🎉
From January, I’ll be joining
@myldn
as the Race and Diversity reporter.
I can’t wait to begin this next step in my career and yes I will eventually be moving back to LDN!
This is exactly the way to alienate every non-hijabi Muslim woman and to create a divide which many (read Muslim men) will latch onto to degrade non-hijabi Muslim women.
You are not more or less worthy if you wear hijab. You are just a woman who wears hijab. That’s it’s really.
My book
#itsnotabouttheburqa
is coming out 21st Feb. It's a collection of essays by Muslim women edited (and contributed to) by Me.
Buy it from stores when it's out or pre-order here: …
Mark it to-read on Goodreads:
I just signed books at
@Foyles
Grand Central and met two readers who got the book one of which HUGGED ME and said “WE NEED MORE” and I CANNOT EXPRESS MY HAPPINESS. Not even in my wildest dreams you guys did I think things like this were possible.
I visited a Gurdwara in Southall this week who say they are feeding around 10,000 twice a day and demand is growing.
The entire effort is run by volunteers, like the elderly women you can see in the picture below chopping vegetables.
I’ve seen people saying Mark Field needs to resign. I think every person in that room who doesn’t intervene needs to resign. This is assault and they are all complicit.
In this longer version of the video, you can see the woman apparently posing no immediate threat as she passes behind Mark Field. He marches her out of the room by her neck. I wasn’t there, so I can’t say she didn’t pose a risk, but it looks heavy handed.
I've started a petition with

#Islamophobia
in major political parties. Please sign, support and support. Also tell a friend! via
@UKChange
No. This is not helpful.
The point here is men - all men should stop telling Muslim women what to do.
The second point is that the hijab is not a prop, it’s not some Halloween costume you wear for an hour, then remove. Real ally ship exists and it’s not this.
Somewhere in a far off feminist utopia, this is what women standing up for one another looks like everyday. Such powerful TV. You will cry. T/w: sexual abuse.

It’s astounding that they’ve labelled the transport in Korea not great when I have been twice and thought it was potentially one of the best transport systems I’d encountered buts obviously I planned and didn’t hitchhike!
Ugh these travellers ruin it for so many!
No mention of hate crime but the 13-year-old boys family have said he has been discharged from hospital and is “recovering well” at home.
They thanked everyone for the support they received too. The sister statement can be found in this story:
Talking to my Uber driver he asked me where I would prefer to live & I said not where I live now. He told me his family is in Yemen where there is endless war & he’s grateful to be here.
A reminder to be grateful alwayys. Tonight’s the beginning of Ramadan.
#RamadanMubarak
My Q for French gov is will a white female student wearing a long Black maxi dress or any long dress be told she cannot wear this to school because it resembles an “abaya,” or is this new rule only being imposed on those who are Black and Brown?
Isn’t that racial profiling?
Here we go I am on break from my shift and found an update for this story.
“A 17-year-old man has since been arrested and charged in connection. He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court today on a charge of assault to severe injury.”
“Pretty” to who? To you?
Who the hell cares what you think about something that you don’t wear and that really shouldn’t concern you.
I can’t believe a grown man took to Twitter cause he doesn’t find hijab “pretty,” are you not embarrassed?
Throughout the Muslim world, the "HIJAB" comes in various forms and shapes... and obviously, the Somali HIJAB isn't the prettiest. While preserving its core functionality, can't we make it a little bit chic! Can
@Asmali77
spearhead a task force on this subject?
This morning I woke up to news that my friends baby died just after birth. And I have cried about several times already, her pregnancy was difficult. And I’m so very sad for her, may Allah give her patience and let her find peace. Please keep her in your prayers this Ramadan.
EXCUSE ME but what the hell is this? Why in the heck is this guy allowed THIS platform to justify his bigotry.
He literally agrees that his work incites hatred, his work was incorrect & that he is a racist.
White men will literally get platformed regardless of what they do.

#ItsNotAboutTheBurqa
is a best seller on Amazon right now!!
I can’t believe publication is this week. It’s been such a team effort and I’m so proud of everyone! 🔥👏🏼
I have a letter from the
@MayorofLondon
telling me he is proud of me and that I’m “inspiring generations”. (we sent him a proof of “it’s not about the burqa”)
Thank you Mr. Mayor I’m proud of your hard work too and grateful for your kind words.
The Prime Minister has asked me to serve as his Foreign Secretary and I have gladly accepted.
We are facing a daunting set of international challenges, including the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East. At this time of profound global change, it has rarely been more
I’m actually infuriated by men spreading their fucking bodies out on public transport like the rest of us don’t exist.
It’s a persistent reminder that men don’t know boundaries and constantly feel entitled to more space than is theres.
& yes I will tell you to stop spreading.
White feminism is toxic. And I hope it burns to the ground. No you do not get to band together and shit on women of colour / Muslim women and tell us how to express our anger and frustration with the those who have perpetuated islamophobic rhetoric.
It’s important to talk about the diversity of the identity of muslim women instead of just banging on about the single narrative (of terrorism/oppression) that’s been associated w/ us. Only then can we progress.
On
@SkyNews
on Friday (was on for 9 mins but here’s a short clip!)
This lady did a whole 8+ min interview & not once was there whataboutism about Hamas.
Not once was she asked if Israel have the “right to defend” themselves.
Not once was she asked if she condemned October 7th.
Isn’t is interesting who is allowed to speak about Palestinians?
You guys. I just realised I haven’t done my list for:
- YA books
- by UK PoC authors
- published in UK
Remember last year there was just under / around 10? 👀
GUYS. Here’s the link for the London launch for my book
#itsnotabouttheburqa
! I hope to see you there! Probably one of the few times nearly ALL contributors are going to be in one place! Don’t miss out! 👌🏼🔥
@reemealy
@hannahsantannaa
@imaanala
If there was a nuanced narratives established in the wider media and culture for muslim women we wouldn’t be complaining about every narrative around muslim hijabis being reductive, presenting us w/out agency. So sit back with your both narratives need to be told lark yeah? 👍🏼
I’m a “Muslim voter” and not anti-Jewish.
Are people just allowed to go on TV and say absolutely anything with no push back and no regard for the hatred that it unleashes?
This is utterly disgraceful.
"By the very definition of being a Muslim you are going to be anti-Jewish."
Trevor Kavanagh's Islamophobia left unchallenged on
@TalkTV
.
Question for
@Ofcom
. Is this Islamophobia now acceptable speech on British TV?
I wrote for
@MetroUK
about why
@thatginamiller
is the real and only MVP and why we need to make sure the victories and campaigns by women of colour are not erased / white-washed.
Who actually cares if Boris Johnson apologises? I want him to be reprimanded for his words/actions by PM.
Is his apology going to undo the damage? Is it going to take back the endorsement he's given to far right views? Keep your apology I don't want it.
Handed in my entire book manuscript to the publisher yesterday. The entire process has been a learning experience. Working w/ contributors, editing, having title and cover convos... I still can't believe it's come together!
Free speech doesn’t mean free of consequences.
We can’t wonder why violence against women in this country keeps happening from Sarah Everard to Zara Aleena and then file this type of dialogue under “free speech” without consequence.
Should Jeremy Clarkson apologise for his comments about the Duchess of Sussex?
Writing for The Sun, he says he dreams of the day Meghan is made to parade naked through the streets of Britain while crowds throw lumps of excrement at her.
Is it his right to say what he thinks?
So we met
@tanfrance
in the green room before BBC Breakfast and he was gracious and kind and so sincere. Please god let me only bump into people like this! 👀
TW: sexual violence
“The detective investigating my case told me he didn't want to hear from me unless someone was physically breaking my limbs or trying to kill me," claims Tashmia, whose rape at hands of two people was made worse by experience w/ Met.
Are we all going to do the “omg I’m so shocked, this is awful” reaction?
Cause if you are shocked you haven’t been paying attention to the publishing landscape at all.
1% of children’s books published in 2017 had a BAME main character

I can’t believe unverified claims have made it to the front pages. They aren’t only unverified they have been declined by Israel THREE TIMES TO SKY NEWS.
This is such an intense time should accuracy, fact checking and verification not be even more important?
Sky News is not reporting that Israeli babies were beheaded as their chief correspondent on the ground didn't see evidence and Israel has declined to confirm it 3 times.
The unverified claim nevertheless leads the Times, Telegraph, Mail, Express, Indpendent, Sun and Metro.
The thing is - I say this w/ the utmost respect to those Muslim sisters who think think this is a good idea / this comforts them.
Someone wearing a part of your identity for a day isn’t the solidarity I / we should want.
I want solidarity in everyday.
#scarvesinsolidarity
1/?
I’ve got that ‘so many books, so little time’ feeling (not unusual for me). I really want to read all of these... so if you’ve read any of them, feel free to help me choose which one to go with first. 2/
This language is utterly irresponsible. These are White men in power who understand their ability to influence racists are intentionally putting Muslim women danger and there is no accountability. Islamophobia, the way to stay relevant in British politics.
Let’s say if I were to start a newsletter where I interviewed Muslim women about identity / personal experience / career / dating and anything else really - who would you want me to interview? 👀
Guess who will be at the
@southbankcentre
on the 7th November to talk about
#itsnotabouttheburqa
. I’ll be joined by
@writtenbysalma
and another contributor which I’m not sure if I can mention cause it’s not on the site yet! PLEASE COME & SEE US!
Are we actually calling what is a collection of
#islamophobic
attacks on
#mosques
in
#Birmingham
that all happened basically within the same 24 hours “vandalism”?
I don’t need ya’ll to wear
#scarvesinsolidarity
I need you to call out media hypocrisy.
BREAKING: A fifth mosque has been attacked in Birmingham, after police confirmed four acts of vandalism overnight. Secretary of mosque on Albert Road says he believes windows were smashed in broad daylight this morning.
@itvnews
The launch event for
#ItsNotAboutTheBurqa
HAS SOLD OUT.
I’m doing A LOT of festivals in the UK in the coming weeks/months and a Guardian Live event in London so don’t worry if you missed out! And watch out for those dates!
Are we this desperate for (hollow) representation that we will take any Black / Brown person in the name of “representation”? Are we going to pretend that the values of these people don’t matter at all? Is the bar THIS low?
Yesterday I saw an ad on
@SpareRoomUK
which said Christian & Catholics allowed but not people of other faiths. I had time so I reported it.
I just got an email from
@SpareRoomUK
to say they can’t do anything cause religion isn’t a protected characteristic?
But YES it is !
If this was a white woman not wanting to shake a mans hand & she had citizenship revoked based on this all the feminists would be up in arms. But it's just a Muslim woman and Muslim women don't get to decide who touches us & who doesn't. We are not allowed to make choices.
In the very same week that three journalists were arrested by Hertfordshire police for doing their jobs, the force's PCC tells
@LBC
the media needs to reconsider how we cover the protests: "your editorial policy needs to reflect whether you are part of the problem."
My follow up question would be how does this new rule imposed on Muslim student not once again push them into a space where they will be stigmatised for expressing themselves in their daily life?
And isn’t the French government encouraging this stigma into their public lives?
Yesterday
#itsnotabouttheburqa
launched into the world.
I am in awe of all the women who have contributed, thankful to all who have supported and all I can say is Alhumdullilah.
So I finally got around to writing this piece for the
@guardian
. My first time writing for the Guardian. “The kind of solidarity being shown in the west risks becoming a self-regarding state of “wokeness”.”
#Christchurch
Yes. I want to discuss the book and talk about a narrative outside of Muslim women being constantly associated with terror and terrorism. Both are important issues 1 of which has been WIDELY discussed already in media. How about we talk about the other for a while hey?
It’s telling of the
#UKYA
publishing sphere that the biggest YA books right now are
#USYA
titles by
#PoC
.
Imagine if the UKYA books by PoC were supported in the same way as USYA books.
Not blaming authors. I’m pointing out the neglect of UKYA publishers of UKYA PoC writers.
A woman who was forced into marriage, then raped, then ended up killing her not-husband in self defence has been sentenced to death. This is not right.

Ya’ll are we going to pretend that
@hm
modest line isn’t basically cultural appropriation of shalwar kameez and abayas sold at an extortion price?
Items of clothing I’m often made fun of / perceived as illiterate for wearing or seen as oppressed or alien when I wear them.
Many of you will probably have seen the video posted of a Black woman being detained over bus fare whilst her young child watches on severely distressed.
Met confirmed to me that the women was attested then de-arrested after they’d established she’d paid for public transport. 1/
I’d like to know how many of the 12 million or so students in France are Muslim & then how many of them wear an abaya because I strongly believe it will be a negligible minority who have once again been targeted by French policy makers.
Much like all the fuss about burkas.
I’m trying to organise a regular IN-PERSON meet up for my women of colour journos group (70 people!) that’s been going since covid!
Any suggestions of rooms/spaces around London we can meet up? 👀
Us all when when we meet in person:
Where will the French gov stop?
Let’s say I agree for argument sake banning abayas is fine.
What happens when girls start wearing baggy tops & skirts? Where does dystopian dictation of Muslims women’s bodies stop?
Why do French policy makers get to decide what is religious?
Are you not embarrassed calling yourself a journalist
@JoshFerme
?
The BBC & FT have reported the man to be Syrian Christian. BBC: “During the incident, the attacker invoked the name of Jesus Christ.”
